Just picked up a 1988 Suzuki LT4wd for $500.00 off craigslist, I just got done restoring a 1989 Yamaha Big Bear 350, and i saw this quad had the 6 select-able ranges and I fell in love with it.

Im fixing the brakes now, moving onto carb soon, Im a machinist and have a good mechanical inclination, but im totally new to ATVs (took me a full week to figure out my lean condition on the big bear wasnt a clogged jet, it was just missing the rest of the intake tube).

few questions

1.) i put the quad up on stands and started to pull the brakes apart, came in the garage today to see half my front diff oil on the ground (pinion seal) id like to replace it, and im just wondering if its bearing style pinion, or crush sleeve, and how hard it would be to replace the seal (and bearings if they're shot). Is it built with looser tolerances (backlash and pinion depth etc) or is it like a vehicle diff where you go to get it dead on or your burn up the gears?

2.) I was told fenders from a LT4wd, lt250, king quad etc, will fit (from up too 2001) is this true? My plastics are FUBARd, and i wouldn't mind going to newer style wider fenders (providing the attachment points are mostly the same)

3.) I LOVE the front diff lock feature. I hate that itll only engage in super low. I do like my mud pits and keeping wheelspin up while going in a straight line is ideal for me. i have heard mutterings on the internet that there's ways to modify the shifter assembly so itll engage in ranges other than super low. Again, is this true and or is there a writeup about it?

Im sure there will be more questions, but for now this is all i can think of, thanks again!

Starting this build thread to keep up with everything on my build and hope to motivate someone!

I picked up this 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 250 2 weeks ago. A guy that I hunt with parked it at the hunt club for a year or so before I asked him if he wanted to sell. He said " fill my feeder and throw some batteries in my cameras, and you can have it". Sounds like a deal to me!
I have attached some pictures of how it sat under a tarp in the woods and when I got it home and cleaned up a little.

So my moto 4 is smoking white smoke and when I go to first gear and get about half throttle there’s no power and it sounds like it’s bogging

I been working on this thing for like 2 months now and it will not run right, is very smokey, and has a pretty loud tap that i think is in the bottom end. Not sure how much the parts are but i will put the time into it if they are pretty cheap. Im not very experienced but going off how the plug looks and the oil on top of the piston i am getting a whole lot of oil coming in from somewhere, not sure if it can come from the valves or if the rings are just shot, my cheap scope cant really see the walls of the cylinder too well.

Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hopefully someone can help me out, I purchased a 350 moto4 2wd while I'm trying to fix a dying honda. I can't see the vin number as there was damage and a bar has been welded where I think the vin should be, The decals say 350 moto4 Huntaway, it has the square gear change low, high, reverse up on the left of the handlebars and it has three rectangle lights up on the dash. after googling I'm struggling to find anything called huntaway, Any ideas? Thanks.
