  1. Ya, 90 bux for a t-stat! I remember when I was a youngin my Chevy trucks took a $5 t-stat.
  2. I may try that. But it looks like there is no gasket on the housing but rather an o-ring on the t-stat. So, it may leak a little bit while checking it out.
  3. A lil update. Warmed up the bike again and rode it around a bit, the fan came on again, but, I noticed that the upper hose that connects to the thermo housing is hot like it should be, but, the lower hose that connects to the water pump housing isn't hot. Barely warm. Maybe the stat is stuck closed???
  4. My neighbor said that his atv would light up the temp light after only 5 minutes of run time. He wants me to replace the thermostat. So, I got it here and I'm checking it out, and I've warmed it up twice and ridden it around a bit and I get no temp light. The fan works as it should. I even unplugged the temp switch right by the thermostat housing and the fan continues to run. So, that tells me the switch is for the temp light? If that is so then shouldn't the light come on when I unplug the switch? Is there another temp switch that turns on the fan? Thanks!
  5. So. thinking about this thing overnight. The cam chain is intact and the tensioner seems to be working properly. The original owner let the thing sit for about 15 years under a tarp. I was mistaken about the guy that I got it from. He did get it running for a short time, and it crapped out and he didn't figure out what was wrong with it. I'm wondering if the center intake valve stuck and got hit by the piston. I'm going to get a leak down tester today and see what the deal is.
  6. I got this 660 a couple days ago. Apparantley, and older gentleman bought in new in 02, rode it a few times and parked it. It has 500 miles and 50 hours on it. So, a dude bought it cheap, and though he could get it running just by cleaning the carb, tank etc. Well, that was done, and it still doesn't start. So, I got it from the 2 nd owner thinking I can fix it. I started checking it out, cleaned the carb (the 2nd owner let it sit for some time too) and when I crank it, it sounds like it wants to start, it might even do a little backfire but no go. It's got spark, I changed the plug, however, the compression came in at only about 25-30 psi. Damn. So, I checked the valves and the intakes R and L seemed just a smidge tight. The middle intake, tho, had a big gap that I could see with the naked eye. So, I'm wondering if somehow that valve hit the piston and bent it?
  7. I'm not kidding, but a week or so ago, at 4am I was awake (as usual) and thinking about this thing. It dawned on my to check the bowl vent tube. Yep it was plugged up. I cleared it out and away it went! Sometimes it's just a simple thing.
  8. Its a 2006. Someone had the carb apart and it looks like the beat the fire out of it. The brass float, on one side, is kinda caved in, and the little tube that is connected to the choke is bent. LOL When it starts it doesn't smoke. I took the carb apart again and it looked like the float was out of adjustment. It was binding up when it went down so it wouldn't let fuel in. I bent the tab a bit where it seemed to move a bit more freely. I put it back on and started it, gas was coming out the overflow, but it still dies out. So, I wasn't sure if it was a fuel problem or something else. So I got it to run again and kept hitting it with a small shot of ether and as long as I did that, it would stay running. So, it seems it's def a fuel flow problem. I checked on ebay for a carb, but found nothing. So...
  9. So the compression on this little quad came up to 90 psi. I squirted a little bit of oil into the plug hole and it came up to 110. Now, I'm having an issue with it not wanting to rev up. It starts ok, but if I turn off the choke it dies. With the choke on, it doesn't want to rev up. I cleaned the carb and replaced the pilot jet. Is the problem the compression, the carb, or both?
  10. Yep. What a PITA! However a cordless grinder with a cut-off wheel works wonders! Got 'er done.
  11. I need to replace both u-joints on the front shaft. I'm not sure where to even start. Do I have to punch out the bearing caps on the old u-joints to get them out? IDK That doesn't sound fun. LOL
  12. I have a service manual. I just gotta get after it and get it figgered out. The owner is starting to get antsy. It's been here about 2 months already. But, I had to send the cylinder out for re-plating, etc. Shipping these days is a crap-shoot. Mightbe 3 days..might be 3 weeks... Thanks for the input and encouragement!
  13. Its kind of a long story...but..from the beginning. I never heard this bike run. When I got it the owner said he thinks it needs a new starter. LOL. It did.....but, it needed a whole lot more. So, after doing the overhaul it would start die, start die, repeat. I had a small water leak out of the head, but I tightened down a little on it and it stopped. But, I did put a new head gasket on and no leaks so far. I tested the fuel pressure. According to the manual it's supposed to be tested while the engine is running. I didn't have the right fitting to do that. But, I could test it without starting it and I did that. The pressure went up to about 45 psi (the book calls for 46) and then it would drop off. So, I figured a cheap fuel pump would tell the story. So after the fuel pump change, same thing. I adjusted the valves, just because I hadn't done it. Then the thing wouldn't crank over. Whenever it would hit the compressions stroke, it would almost stop. So I figured I did something wrong. I checked the cam timing and I was 1 tooth off and that made the changes that I made to the valves way off. I got that straightened out. Now it would crank over, but not start unless I gave it shot of ether. So, now it's getting no fuel at all. I changed to more expensive pump, and it did the same. Now, yesterday, my wife asked about these wires and this plunger looking thing hanging down. I said I didn't know what they were, so I grabbed the plunger thing and hit the starter and it fired up! And then died. It fired up a couple times, a couple of times it wouldn't. The plunger thing didn't have any effect on it. Or the other 2 wires. So, that got me thinking that there's a short or a loose wire somewhere. I'm not sure what these 2 things are. They weren't hooked up when it came here.
  14. This 700 was run out of oil. Seized the con rod to the crank....yada yada. So, I rebuilt the engine and now it will start and run for about 5 seconds and die. I replaced the fuel pump with a cheapie from ebay and it didn't change. I replaced the O-rings on the injector and still didn't change. So, the tech at the Yamaha shop said that the most likely problem is the cheapo fuel pump. I got another more expensive one and it still didn't change things. I asked him where the power to the injector comes from and he said the CDI box. But since the thing does run a little, he ruled that out. Any thoughts?????
  15. Alrighty. Great info. Of course the first things that I will do when I get it home (tomorrow i think) is change the oil, probably flush the gas tank and I'll most likely replace the belt. I guess I gotta change oil in the trans too, huh?
  16. Thanks, Well, it is only a 250. With me on it (205lbs) it seemed like it would only do about 35/40 mph. I didn't hold it wot for very long. Didn't really wind it out as she probably won't do either. But the automatic with no shifting is definitley a plus. Add in the light weight (as compared to the Honda @ 600lbs! ), better, softer suspension I think it will be a good fit for her. I'm just not sure on the reliability of these BRP machines. I already called my buddy and told him that I would give him the 700. I tried to get it for 600 hehe. I'm sure with some aftermarket parts I could widen the stance a bit to make less tippy, no? And my buddy has had it since new, so I know it was taken care of.
  17. My wife has a Honda rancher 420 4x4. We got it new in 07. Its been flawless. Nary a problem. But its heavy, rides rough, it's hard to steer and handle, and she doesn't like shifting even tho it has thumb shifters. After our last outing I've been thinking that she needs something more practical. She is a flat ground rider. And she doesn't like going fast. So with that said, my buddy offered up a 2008 ds250. It was his granddaughters and never ridden hard. It started right up and ran fine. The trans/clutches seemed all good. There are some little brackets that kind da hold the front fenders up and I think the headlights too. Those are funky and the headlights kinda flop around. He said a tree branch fell on it and messed those up. The plastic and seat are in good shape. Needs a good cleaning tho. Anyway he wants $700 for it. Has an extra set of nice rear knobbies too. Idk much about can-am stuff. I know if it was a Honda it would probably be up around $3,000. But it isn't. Whatcha think?
  18. Like I said I already ordered a replacement axle. I have an 07 trx 450r here also and I took a wheel off, and tried one of the new hubs that didn't fit on the 04, and it fit perfectly. That's why I went ahead and ordered another. Thanks, tho!
  19. I already ordered a used Honda axle. I struck out everywhere trying to get info on that axle.
  20. Hey all. I got a stripped hub on this 450r ,and I ordered some new oem spec hubs, but they don't fit on the splines. I can't find and I.D or a name at all on the axle. The splines measure right around 28 mm. They're a good bit bigger than the stock ones. I even tried the hub from a 700 Raptor, but no-go.
  21. So ,check it out Frank. I went to see the Polaris tech yesterday and he, they were just as puzzled as I was. We noticed that if I was to put the timing marks opposite of what the diagram shows, then the lobes seemed like they were in the ballpark. The guy said just line em up in the 10/2 positions and go for it. So I did that. Cranking it over by hand and there was some interference with piston and valve. I took the intake cam and turned it 1 tooth and, by eyeball, it looked dead on. I put some oil in and gave it a shot of ether and as soon as I touched that starter button, she fired up. It shut off right away and I gave a fist pump and shouted F**K YA! My wife came out wondering what was wrong. LOL. I said nothing. Gave it another shot of ether and hit the button....
  22. It's pretty difficult to mix them up. The ex cam has the decompressor on it. I may have to go talk to the Poalris tech on tuesday. Show him what I got.
  23. Note the position of the lobes in this diagram out of the manual. That's the issue. Intake is on the left, just like in my pics above.
  24. Yes I have. But when the cams are out it really doesn't make any difference. As long as the piston is at tdc. If there no cams involved then it doesn't matter. But, that isn't really the issue.
