Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and am hoping someone out there can help me with a no spark issue I am having with my ATV. I have the service manual and I have replaced/checked everything that I know how with the exception of the Digital Igniter Unit. Does anyone know how to test this item to verify if it is bad or not. OK, so I replaced the CDI, still no good. So, I have replaced the coil and CDI, verified my Kill switch works correctly, verified no grounds and good continuity in all of the wires. I verified I had the correct ohm readings (according to my service manual) for the pickup coil (Trigger) but have done nothing else with it. I do have a question. I have 12Vdc going to one of the contacts on the ignition coil, as it should according to my service manual. The coil is only suppose to have 3.6-4.8 ohms between the contacts so I assume I will see the 12Vdc on the other contact when connected (which I do). However, while sitting in a static condition, just for the heck of it, I checked the voltage on the spark plug cap, and I have 12vdc sitting on it, and therefore sitting on the spark plug while it is on it. Is that normal. That wire is coming off of the secondary coil and I had thought that voltage must be flowing through the primary coil in order for it to induce voltage on the secondary coil. I know a little bit about how coils work, but have no idea if that is the way that they are suppose to work on ATV's. Again, just for the heck of it, I check the voltage while trying to turn it over, and the 12vdc that was on it before just trickles down to zero. Any ideas on what to do?       Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark. 
       
      What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual. 
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
      1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
      What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.  
       As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

      Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

      Does anyone have a recommendation of a really Heavy Duty ATV cover. I have bought several and they do keep the water off somewhat, but they are very thin and do not contour with the shape very well and water pools up in the rack louvers. I think i may be looking for a heavy canvas one, if anyone has a recommendation it would be greatly appreciated.
