Starting Problem with Praire 300 4x4

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New to the form but have gotten lots of information so it was time to sign up.

I live in NJ and have 3 ATV's. one Suzuki 400 Eiger 4x4 and  a Honda recon 250. Use them on my farm and take them into a sand pit by me and have a blast with them.

I have my cousins Kawasaki Prairie 300 4x4. (I believe its a 2000?) It's been sitting for 3 years and he wanted to get it running for use on his horse farm to haul hay and feed during the winter. I'm having problems getting it to start. Here's what I done so far:

Replaced fuel tank due to cracked top and leaking with used one.

Replaced fuel lines from tank to shutoff and carb

Replaced carb with new. Old one was corroded in the bowel.

Replaced Battery

Getting spark on plug but still will not turn over. I have sprayed starting fluid into carb but still will not even attempt to kick over. It just cranks.

If I pull start, I feel good compression

All suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jeff

I would still do a compression test. Did it have any issues before it sat for 3 years? Have you changed the oil? Is there any moisture in the cylinders when you pull the plug?

I wonder if the spark isn't hot enough, maybe look into is the CDI box.

Moved topic to Kawasaki forum.

Just got the above mentioned quadrunner. First one ever. Always been a small engine tinkerer but figured I'd need a little help on this one.

    • Rebuilding 2002 Suzuki Quad Master 50 2-stroke

Hey everyone, been dealing with quads since I was a kid,now I have a son who loves my raptor 700 and had gotten him an electric power wheel quad but it didn’t cut it for him.so for his birthday “xmas eve” I picked up a used 2002 quadmaster 50 for 500 bucks. It started and moved but needed work.. got it home drove it for a few feet and it started bogging down and would shut off. so I stripped quad down to the frame cleaned it up as best I could without removing motor from frame. replaced top end new head piston rings etc cheap kit off eBay along with carb that will be here today.the filter that was on carb was degraded and soaked with gas. Also new cylinder doesn’t have vacuum line so how do I block that off without getting new petcock valve? tightened chain. guy said quad doesn’t take oil as it’s a closed case right then I knew the guy knew nothing about the machine. So I changed oil,was black and thick and just nasty like sludge. suspension in rear seems good but the fronts are very stiff, any way to adjust these or should I get a new set? also upon stripping everything down I noticed the exhaust restrictor was gone so without that do I need to update jets in new carb, old carb has original jets?? and also I’m new to cvt tranny so how would I know if it’s bad etc? sorry for all the questions just want to make this thing safe for my 5 year old knucklehead. added some photos of my current progress didn’t take any inbetween cleaning everything though    please any info will be appreciated. i haven’t rebuilt a quad since 1999 when I had my blaster and my buddies had other 2 strokes I was the mechanic with no knowledge but always seemed to get things right!! also if you notice the old head looked chipped and damaged and I’m wondering if those chips made it into motor how would I go about finding them?i would think by now they would be chewed up? I did not strain oil that I drained but might do that later when the kids are sleeping and I have time to check it without kiddo seeing!

    • 2005 Suzuki King Quad 700 - Fan Replacement

The saga of the fan continues. The Pin attempt in the fan shaft failed.  I then moved on to trying to weld the fan hub to the fan shaft.  I took it for a run the weld broke.  Now it was truly F'ed.  To recap the dealer price, they want $400 + CND for a replacement fan assembly. I searched all sorts of after market places and no one carried one.  Ebay had some used ones but they were $120 USD + Conversion rate for something as old as what I have.  I went to Amazon and eventually settled on this.   amazon link   What I found... and was amazed... was that the fan mounted to the Suzuki fan assembly bracket.  I was prepared to manufacture my own mount conversions...  It also came with "Harpoon mounts" (nylon zip tie like things that go straight through the rad.   Anyways it mounted to the original bracket. It fit perfectly.  Cut the electrical plug off replaced it with the Suzuki... all good.  Let the quad heat up, thermo coupler kicked in the fan circuit, polarity was right... all was good....  Fan is under the circuit fuse rating.     so I finally have a solid fan solution.  $34 CND vs $400+ CND

    • 1986 or 87 Honda 250sx ATC keep or sell

Long story short, I purchased an 86 or 87  ( the last year made) 250sx aTC about 5 years ago.  It was in pretty good original condition.  A friend helped me clean the tank, carb etc and it started right up.  I drove it around a few times and that was about that.  It is located in Northern California at a friend’s place and I reside in southern Ca about 500 miles away.  I’m debating going up and retrieving it but I kind of have too many projects to really enjoy it.  My rebuild on my 64 Land Rover is gonna tank space and priority. i was wondering approx value of it as well as if it’s worth transporting down to Southern Ca for a larger market/better price?? If I remember correctly, everything is in pretty good shape, may need new toilets soon.  thoughts ?  I appreciate the input.
