I have a Kawasaki Bayou 300.  When the four wheeler is idling it won't rev up and the spark plug fouls easy.  It acts like it has a rev limiter.  When I start it, it only runs about 5 minutes and then dies.  Anybody have any suggestions on what might be wrong with it and what it would take to fix this.

Has it been sitting ? And is there a rev limiter ? Sounds like a lot of fuel going into the cylinder and not enough air. I would start at the mixture screws on the carb and go from there.  Double check that they have not been turned or re adjusted. If not then possibly a blockage within  the carb and a good cleaning will need to be done.

Also keep in mind that a weak spark can cause this also so should that carb be ok maybe take a quick look at the ignition system maybe a weak coil etc.

good luck

I agree with Frank. Probably carb related. I also have a Bayou 300 4x4 also and had loads of problems with the carb. Which I sorted with a set of Japanese jets and a new main needle.

A couple of simple things to check first, make sure the airfilter box isn't full of crap. This will restrict air and cause the engine to run rich, fowling the plug.

Check that the choke isn't stuck on. Move the lever on the handle bar and check that the choke arm is moving the carb choke butterfly open and shut.

Failing this as Frank said if you can take the carb off, strip and clean it would be the next thing to do. Get hold of a manual which will step you through the procedure.

This vid should help you

Come back to us if you're still stumped.Good luck fella👍🏻

My 99 bayou 300 does the same thing except I've checked and cleaned the carb and timing and Valve lash. Sometimes it'll backfire and then run fine. If it sets in the Alabama heat it acts up but if it sets for twenty minutes with the fuel off it's fine.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

I would appreciate being pointing in the correct direction for a wiring diagram and or schematics of the 88 Honda FourTrax 300 4x4 if anybody has any knowledge of how to test the ignition system stator and CDI I don't know if the voltage regulator probably and also the FCU I put a new ignition in it it is a cheap aftermarket one doesn't have the correct plugs but has the correct wiring scheme I get power  the neutral light comes on and the oil light stays on it turns over but I have no spark
