Bought this quad a couple days ago. Got it home and couldn't get it started. Got my new starter and recoil on. Starts up great. Took it for a quick spin hot light came on. Guess my question is there a way to test the sensor? If sensor is good what would be next step? Any other common checks I should do before throwing new parts at it?

Thanks.

Welcome to Quadcrazy @Josh Cummins.
Have you noticed if the cooling fan comes on?  If not then locate the sensor on the radiator and you should find two wires going to it.  If you take those two wires off while the key or engine is ON, jump the wires  together and the cooling fan should come right on.  If so then the sensor is probably bad.  You can test it but it’s not worth it, just  replace it.

If you have seen the fan running then it could be a bad thermostat or water pump. I would lean more toward a thermostat.   Make sure you order a gasket with it.

If the fan is not coming on at all then there are two fuses that could stop that fan.  One is at the fuse box and the other is an in-line fusable link that’s going to the fan.

A few things today.

Fan is not spinning. Will have to jump the wires. To find out more. To dark to mess with it today.

I did notice that while trying to put it into gear it would grind pretty bad then fall in. What should I be looking for here? I'm assuming it will be high idle but what else should I be checking?

Thanks again. Hopefully I'll get this thing running good before snow falls as I bought it to plow a few sidewalks.

If it’s idling high then yes that would be it, especially if it’s cold. Let it warm up and see where it idles. Should be around 800-1000 at best.

If the fan does not come on when you jump the two wires then check for 12v on one of the wires. Either a test light or a tester/meter, one on ground and the other to any one of the two wires.  One of them should show 12v, if not then there’s a problem with power.
if you do have 12v and the fan is not coming on when you jump the wires then the fan is prob bad OR the fan ground has failed so check that as well if the ground is good then it’s a bad fan motor.

Got the fan to come on. Helps if the wires are connected. Had a break in the wire.

Also checked and topped off coolant. So far no hot light

Next issue to address is no AWD. Push button no light or anything. Speedo lights up but needle doesn't move. I read that on the newer quads you can bypass the Speedo to get the AWD to work. Does that apply to my 1994?

Thanks again for the help.

New electric starts has it firing right up!

That’s great news on the fan. As far as the awd goes its the same premise. 12v brings in the awd so take the tester and see if you have 12v on one of the wires on the push button.   If not start tracing it back to the power source, maybe a fuse.  If you do have 12v on one wire then test the other wire and press the awd button to make sure the button is working.  If it does send 12v through the button to the outgoing wire your testing then keep tracing it foreword to the controller or solenoid that brings in the awd. It will lead you to the bad or faulty part OR maybe another broken wire!

Is the Speedo the same way or is it a cable? Cause be nice to have that working too.

Also do I use the demand drive or angle drive for the front hubs. I've found conflicting information on this.

Thanks

You have to get into it and start to trace things out. Get to the back of the  Speedo and look, there should be a cable based on the year but I’m not sure unless I go through the manual.  It could be electronic also but I’m sticking with a cable.   Download the manual and start to get familiar with the machine.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

      Hello All
I'm kinda new to ATVs. I just bought a 1987 Suzuki quad runner 230 Dual Range. I'm having a problem finding info on it. It's very clean, only 2.800 miles. The front wheels are only 30 in.center to center. I was thinking about adding wheel spacers to give it more stability. I realize the added stress on ball joints and bearings. I'm wondering if there are any other concerns? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I have a Yamaha Timberwolf 4x4 250. I want to put a winch on it, but just wondering if the charging system will handle it or not ? Has anyone added one to their machine and have you had any issues?

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
