I have a small oil leak from the valve cover. Doesn't affect the oil level, more of an annoyance as it creates smoke from burning off the exhaust pipe. I can't seem to find a replacement valve cover gasket, so I'm curious if it even has a valve cover gasket. If not, any ideas on why it would leak?

Sorry for double post but i dont know how to edit my previous post, if you follow my link No12 and No13 are gaskets under the nuts, may its from there the oil is leaking? Or the plug No17.

Doesnt seem to be a gasked there, but a little bit of the liquid gasked  Permatex the rightstuff, its expensive but works good, gasolin resistent aswell 😃

Chances are it's leaking out of your exhaust valve inspection cap (15). Change the o-rings (16) which are likely dried out and flat like a turd on a bad stretch of road. You can buy OEM ones  (09280-30001)

for too much money, or get them from your local hardware store for around $1 each. Spec is (D:3.0, ID:29.5) which means a 3mm thick o-ring with an inside diameter of 29.5 mm. I found ones that were 3mmX30mm which worked perfect. Stopped my smokeshow, it should stop yours.

Yup.. there's no gasket under the cover, just sealer. I doubt that's where the leak is coming from. The valve adjusting caps or the decompression lever's shaft seal do leak quite often though. First thing to do though is to identify where the leak's coming from. Clean the top end with a bit of petrol and a hose off, then run the engine while you sit and watch, or go for a short run and check for leaks before it's had a chance to spread oil all around again.

The valve cover's are real easy to change, and the decompression lever and shaft pull straight out together once you've removed one bolt going down through the cam cover. The bolt is the one near the outer end of the shaft. Take note of where the spring goes, and it's a bit of a struggle to get it back into place as you refit the shaft, but it can be done with some pliers on the spring to wind it into tension as you push the shaft in the last ten mills or so.

      1990 kawasaki bayou 300c idles fine but pops out exhaust and intake when trying to excel, will not take throttle past 1/4 , any one had this problem?
      have replaced carb twice, same thing, fresh built engine cylinder head, same as before, new spark plug, flywheel key is good, pulser test good, good spark

      Guys, I've got a 1999 Honda Foreman 450S.  It runs great, but smokes out the exhaust after startup until it warms up.  I'm thinking the valve seals are leaking.  I was wondering if there is a way to replace them without removing the head or if there's an oil additive that will recondition the rubber seals.  Any advice?

      I have replaced the cracked stator cover on my non-running 2006 LT-F400F that I purchased recently, checked all the shafts vs the service manual and pics and advice here.  I replaced missing gears, bushings and washers, made sure that truth marks were all aligned properly, that the shift cam springs felt like they returned properly, etc.  IAfter installing the new stator cover I checked the transfer lever for proper movement from L-H-R and then cranked it up.  Happily, it runs and changes gears well in L,  but it will not shift into H or R for anything.  I have opened it back up and am going back through it looking for the missing puzzle piece(s) but how can I best check that I have everything right this time before buttoning it back up?

      I recently got my hands on a free 2004 Recon that the owner had zero information on the machine or the history. Long story short, a little troubleshooting and research revealed i needed to replace the timing chain for it to stay running. when i opened the case, it the chain was so horribly stretched, that the tensioner pivot arm had play between it and the chain! I also found the oil pump chain totally disconnected from the sprocket due to being completely worn out. I tore the whole engine down and rebuilt it from the bottom up finding little things here and there that needed to be replaced. Upon inspecting the top end, i didn't find any bad/excessive play in the crank, rod bearings or wrist pin. Now the machine runs great, but even after 2x adjusting the valves, the chatter is way more than you'd expect from a honda normally. My neighbor is an auto mechanic by trade, and i asked him to take a listen. the look on his face when i started it and it was chattering like that was priceless! He mentioned that maybe the valves themselves might be wore out or stretched. my question here: what all can cause the excessive rattle up in the valve cover aside from valves being out of spec? Everything else seemed to be in decent condition as far as rockers and guides go. I am fairly new to small engine/ATV repairs, but am learning as a hobby and have a fair amount of knowledge with how to do some wrenching. Thanks!

      Hi All.  I introduced myself some weeks ago with my 2006 LT-F400F that needed a list of repairs including replacing the cracked generator cover.  It is back together as of last night and cranks up, idles and revs high pretty well.  Needs some fine tuning and stop backfiring at stop.
      The big issue is it will not go into gear.  I reassembled the insides with help from y’all’s posts.  The transfer selector moves from H-L-R, and the foot shifter moves thru the gears and finds neutral easily enough.  Before I tear it back open, the  transfer selector on top does not move as far as the repair manual says.  The diagram shows the shaft moving something like 40 degrees between L and H and 50+ degrees between L and R but it doesn’t move that far even though it finds the indent areas and moves well.  
      Could this be the problem.  I aligned all the dots on the shifter gears inside and it appeared to not be binding anywhere.  I do hear the gears touching when I shift like they are trying to engage, but zero movement from the ARV
      It was somewhat difficult to tell whether all the parts are installed on each shaft.
      Are there better/bigger photos somewhere that would allow me to be confident I included all the washers and bushings, etc?  If I had any doubt on parts that were laying inside after the cover broke then I purchased replacements from online stores.
