Quadman, the cdi probably blew because when you disconnect the battery while it's running, and charging, the voltage goes up before the regulator has a chance to prevent it. There is a "spike" in the voltage that is too high and shorts through insulation or components.

The voltage regulator is designed to be connected to a battery and always expects some small amount of current to be going into the battery. It struggles to chew up all the excess power when there's no battery connected. It's regulator adjusts too slow. Once the battery is off, and the regulator has adjusted, they often seem ok, but the voltage spike can take out any electronics, such as cdi, dashes, efi systems.

 Thanks for all the feedback!

Here's how the original CDI got blown: After riding several minutes the ATV suddenly stopped and quit running. I quickly found that the positive terminal on the battery broke off while riding from all the vibration of 20 years. (The engine was not running at this point)

After wedging it back on, the quad started up & ran fine, but due to the bumpy road the cable kept coming off, the engine dying each time. After doing this three times the 4 wheeler would only turn over, and as it turned out, it lost spark because the CDI got blown.

Hey guys and gals. I've been working on my friends 2007 big bear IRS. Unfortunately after 3 different people got their hands on it and only made things worse every time.  After months of finding just crazy problems everywhere. I'm finally at the point we're its almost 100% !!! But I'm getting a short somewhere between the 4xW switch I believe. I managed to by searching the internet like a  fiend, got my hands on an official Yamaha wire harness for the year and make. But I don't have the numbered component list and to be honest. After hours of going through and making everything so it's  easy to reference. If anyone has a picture of the referenced components. I would be forever in your debt. I've spent hours marking up the blown up diagram so it will be easy, for any possible future repairs. Please and thank you. Here's a picture of what i have so far.  Unsealed it in plastic so oil and crap won't spill or get smudged. This damn things worth it's weight in gold.              Thanks Jeff                2007 Yamaha big bear 400 IRS.       YFM40FBW

I was looking to buy a new ATV.
I was debating between Polaris sportsman 450 and Honda rancher.
      Polaris it a bit cheaper.
But can you tell me which one will have more demand on the used market? Which one will keep it's value better?

Let's say 3-5 years from now.

Good morning, checking in from Southern Ontario, I have 3 quads. 201 Honda Forman 450S, 2007 Suzuki King quad 450 and a 2021 Polaris 570 sportsman. My wife and I do a fair amount of riding but hoping to do more this year.
