Hi All -

My son and I went in halvers on a 2006 Kodiak 450 recently. We rode it some, and realized it is not charging the battery. I pulled the rectifier off and saw the plug was jacked up, the DC hot wire was not even making a connection. So, I thought that was the issue, but decided to test rectifier and stator using my multimeter while stuff was apart.

The rectifier tested bad using the technique I saw on YouTube here:

I got OL on a diode test when I should have been seeing .2-.8v on one of the tests so it is bad. So, I will be getting a new rectifier and fixing the wiring/plug.

While doing that, I also tested the stator. The stator tested with zero ohms when checking resistance between the three white wires, and I think I should have been seeing at least a little resistance, .2-.9 ohms. I did a ground test and it was good. Also, I started the bike and checked A/C voltage on all three wires and it looked OK.

My question is, do you guys think the stator is bad with the 0 ohms resistance? I am a little confused since I see A/C voltage.

The wires are clean and it looks like there is a new gasket in place, so I think previous owner put a new stator in at some point. Also, the rectifier looks newer, not as dirty as rest of bike. I suppose he may have put in a cheap amazon regulator/rectifier and stator but not sure.

Thanks
Clint

If the stator puts out power then it will probably be fine. You could test it with a light bulb. A car headlight would be ok at idle, or a household bulb should glow with a few revs on.

appreciate the reply.  figured I would follow up.  put a new rectifier in (used OEM one from eBay) and all is well right now.  14.5 volts or so when running.  Also I hate to admit that I had my multimeter set too high when checking resistance on the stator.  I am new at this so was a good lesson learned.  at correct setting it showed resistance at the low end of acceptable rate.  Ooops!

I want to recommend to others that used eBay junkyard OEM parts seem like a good option.  I think they are better than the chinese knockoffs you can get on amazon and they cost about the same.  I can't afford to buy new OEM but these are a good option.   The rectifier I replaced was a Chinese knockoff and it quit working. It looked brand new.   Also, you are not funding a country that doesn't like us much.

Yeah ohms gauges are tricky things.  The whole concept of resistance, and it's ramification, is a tricky thing..

If there is a total open circuit the gauge will read with some text mostly, something like OC or an infinity symbol( a short wavy line). If the gauge is on the wrong setting then yeah, it won't give a true figure, and it might show "0", but that's not the same as infinity.

If it shows an infinity symbol then there's an open circuit, if it shows any other figure, even a zero, it's a reading. A lot of people get tricked into thinking a zero reading is the same as an open circuit..  it's not.

Im in total agreement on OEM parts, I shyed away from them off eBay , thought if they want that much money for these old parts that may or maynot work they should at least wash the mud off and make them presentable. Like you I am having so much trouble with the aftermarket stuff, I may be changing my thinking.

Hi all.  New to the forum & quads.  Seems like a great place full of info.
I just recently picked up a 2005 Suzuki KingQuad LTA700.  I need a battery.  I've been reading up on conventional vs AGM types.  I have a Royal Distributing and Canadian Tire.  RD has 2 types avail for my year/Model a battery YTX16-BS CRANK $75, and BATTERY YTX20CH-BS YUASA $140.  Neither of these is the type from the manual FTZ16-BS.
from what I can tell... I think the only difference is the capacity with the $75 unit rated at 14 AH/10HR and the $140 unit rated at 18 AH/10HR ... which is the rating in the manual for the FTZ16-BS.  How much does this make a difference for nearly x2 the cost?
And about the models/type numbers.... what is important to know ... they all end in "-BS" but are the other details relevant or just manufacturer naming?

The battery on my Big Bear drops completely down in the battery compartment nothing sticks up to grip too, plus there is only 1/8" clearance along the sides, no way to get a grip on it to pull up out of battery compartment. I thought about putting a piece nylon strap under the battery and leaving enough up each side to give me something to pull it up out ff the battery compartment or using a big zip tie around the battery.
Any others have any ideas or have had this issue.

2001 Yamaha Kodiak. Rebuilt and cleaned carb after sitting for 10 years. Got her runnin but now this clunking noise is happening and sometimes the engine stalls hard like the tranny or clutch abruptly stops the engine. This was not happening 10 years ago. Also the clunk will happen and the rpm's spike. See video. Any ideas before I tear into it?

Just bought the atv, sounds like there’s sand in a bearing near the clutch! Any ideas?
