So basically what is happening now that I’ve driven it around a little bit and gotten to test some things Is I’ll drive in first, it doesn’t go any faster then I kick it to second and it goes just a tiny bit faster and then I kick it to third and it stays the same but then fourth it slows down and then in fifth it hardly moves at all and that whole time it sounds like crap

I am thinking top end rings valves reworked. Unless you heard knocking noises and it shifts good i wouldnt suspect a bottom end problem. As far as the vent hose being off i would drain the oil put in new run it a little bit then change it again. If the oil looks milky do it again.

I agree 150 PSI  is plenty to run on i was just basing my opinion on the smoking and what i saw in the video, never seen a carb or vent problems cause that much power loss so quickly. I have seen it from a plugged exhaust. Could be wrong but it is definately loosing power.

Ok so I finally got time to take the exhaust off and when I did the thing ripped and it went fast now so thank you I have yet to drive it more with a proper exhaust to see how it runs with everything put together so I’ll let you know

Oh yea and it quit smoking

The old exhaust is probably full of burnt up oil crud. caustic soda softens it and then a bash or ten loosens it and a hose gets a lot out. Or, if you have oxy-acetylene, and like to annoy the neighbors you can burn it out most spectacularly by putting a flame to the front end till it's starting to glow a bit of carbon, then turn the acetylene off. It turns into a rocket..  With a lot of smoke.

It makes the pipe red hot though and pretty much either burns it out right then or rusts it out withing a few months.. But it is fun.

It even sounds like a rocket..

Alright so i put I different exhaust on and it works better than the other one, but it idles perfectly and will idle all day but then I take it down the road and after about 2 minutes it pooped on me, so I pushed it back about a 1/4 mile and then I jumped it and it started right back up. Do you know what is happening now?

Either a shortage of fuel from the tap, or some electrical component is getting hot and temporarily closing down.

If the tap's not letting out enough fuel to keep up with the requirement when the throttle's open, or the float needle's partly blocked causing the same problem, then it can take quite a distance before the shortfall shows up. If you turn the tap on and open the carb drain screw it should be obvious if it's not maintaining flow. Make sure you watch it for long enough for the bowl to empty and then see what the flow's like.

The electrical's a bit harder to diagnose but if you have a timing light you could drive down the road watching that to see if the spark fails after a while, or take a spark-plug with you and quickly connect it to the lead and check for spark when it stops running.

Ok I just tried again this time with a charged battery and I think it could be a shortage of fuel because after it bogged and sputtered for a while it died and then I cracked it and it started back up and idles perfectly, is the tap the fuel petcock?

Oh the petcock filter could be clogged I’ll check that as well

Yeah the seafoam cleaned out all the oil carbon and everything, try putting some oil back in the cylinder and check the compression again see if it goes up, if it does its definately the rings , you might also check the valve clearance and see if it has changed since using the sea foam.

Haha. Yeah good. I was wondering why you weren't having starting troubles at 90lbs. Hopefully it will come up a lot. If it doesn't, try as Gw says and put about a teaspoon of engine oil down the plug hole then do a compression test. The compression will come up by a lot if it's rings, and hardly change if it's valves.

If you do a compression test without the oil, then watching the needle as you do the compression test is also a good idea. You should crank it over about six compressions and watch to see if it's at full/maximum compression on the second compression, or whether it gets a little higher each compression till it maxes out. That's a sign of bad rings.

Ok so I messed with it and found out that it chugs oil and when I tested compression without oil at wide open it was back at 150 and then put oil in the cylinder and it went up to about 185

And now for some reason it doesn’t want to idle now that I filled it up with oil, and im getting blow by. So I’m thinking way too much oil is getting in the cylinder so that’s why it making it run bad?

      Following on from this thread;

I've finally got around to pulling the clutch cover off to have a look at the shifter ratchet mechanism. The screw holding the pinned star wheel has come loose and the wheel flops about. Unfortunately the keyway on the shifter cam has broken on both sides, I found both pieces.
      Anyone had this problem?
The keyway on the cam "ramps" out, so I'm thinking of making a slightly longer key with a ramp ground into it. I'll put it back together with retaining compound. It may not work but I think it's worth a try.

In search of my first ATV? What are good older 4x4 models?
    • By Sportsman500guy
I bought a 1996 Sportsman 500 4x4 about a month ago, and I love it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a few problems with the high-range gear. The first problem is that the gear selector will intermittently pop out of high and into neutral. This problem will sometimes occur when starting from a stop and sometimes will also occur while at cruising speed. The last time this happened I stopped and put it back into gear, however, as soon as I tried to throttle the machine would die. I turned it on again with no problems put it back into high and it died again. Once again I turned it on with no problems put it into low instead and it worked fine with no problem. I drove in low down the road slowly for a little and then shifted back into high with no issues.
I plan on working on it this weekend and would just like some opinions or feedback from anyone who may have experienced these problems before. I'm very mechanically inclined but im unsure of exactly where to start as this is the first Polaris ATV that I've owned. Any feedback is appreciated and thanks in advance

I finally got around to working on the TRX, this has been an ongoing problem with this machine. This is a machine that we keep on my Fathers property, i dont see it that often, my brother haad it professionally repaired last year and year before same problem, the new starter gears and bypass gears last about a year and the machine is not used that often, he said he was done with it , so i thought i should go take a look. Sure enough the gears were all malled again.

IMG_4910.mov   There is some slack in there but most is taken up by the gear cover,if anyone with history with these machines has had the same problem, let me know your findings. Where i am now im looking for finding replacement honda gears on Ebay and try those. I suspect the original was replaced with aftermarket gears years ago and they just worse quality as the years go by.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
