About Me

My Garage

  1. Hey all back again with my 1989 moto 4 250. After putting a new carb on it it's really sputtery, it has new gas and I'm wondering what to tune on the carb to make it idle better. I've attached a video to describe the issue more. The bike is still work in progress but I think the video gets the point across. Thanks! Snapchat-1142015191.mp4
  2. Hey first post here got a moto 4 250 that I'm fixing bought it for cheep she was running before I flooded it. Pushed the bike back and started tearing it apart and got it running again my issue is she idles way to high even after messing with the carb screws now I don't know a lot about bikes but hoping someone else dose. I replaced the carb with a used one opened it up and it don't look like it's dirty but she won't run with the original carb
  3. I have a 1985 Yamaha Moto 4 230 CC the wiring harness is shot trying to wire up as a pit bike but everything I've seen says that the hot wire coming out of the stator is red and black there is no red and black wire coming out of stator please tell me which one is the hot wire out of the stator thank you.
  4. Can anyone tell me if a timberwolf wiring harness will interchange with a moto 4? Both 250cc
  5. Was given an old moto 4 350 a while back and got it running but had problems with the sub trans being stiff, so stiff the we have broken the shift lever off of it and was just trying to find info about possible lockouts and any info to free it up and get it working again. It's currently in high and is moving around find but would eventually like reverse back
  6. It's a 350 1989 2wd has 14k mileage and it Needs work. I bought this for a couple hundred. It turns on but the foot gear shifter broke off and the person said its stuck in 3rd gear. When you turn it on it moves forward. How do I get it out of gear? Also the u joint is broken, how do I repair that? and seems like needs some kind of suspension work because I can move the front rims by hand. Lights dont work
  7. A few weeks ago, I foolishly asked my girlfriend about a quad that's been sitting under a tree at her parents' place for 25 years... This thread will be a sort of log of my attempt to resurrect it. I'm actually a computer guy, not a mechanic, so this will be quite conical for some of you, I'm fairly sure 🤣 So far I've found out it's likely a 200. Not sure what year yet... The frame has a serial of 53J-001343 (I think). Engine appears to have the same number. We inflated the tyres on Saturday, which were still up today, so that seems a win. This also confirmed that the wheels do turn, as it rolled back into its 25 year old indentations as the 4th tyre started coming up. Oil looks used but otherwise OK. I'll change it if I actually get it running, but looks good enough for attempting to start it up again. Fuel tank had.... something in it. It smelt more like old stagnant water than fuel of any sort. Drained that out and flushed some clean fuel through to be sure. Fuel tap was jammed in the off position. WD40 and some force got it free. Did that after the fuel hose was off, so hopefully the carb isn't full of whatever it was in the ttank. Engine turns fairly easily with the rope start. Made typical exhaust puffing sounds. Unfortunately the rope mechanism was not fully rewinding, so I was limited to about half its length... And today it jammed fully pulled out. I attempted to remove the rusty screws, but one stripped it's head out. So for now the rope rewind is jammed. Spark plug connector seems possibly burnt inside. Black crap on both the plug and up in the connector, and the connector doesn't seem to actually stay on. Throttle lever is stuck fast. See photo for possible reason... Cable also feels jammed. I assume the throttle itself is jammed. That'll be fun given my skill level. Electrical stuff all seems dead. No headlights. No starter. No indicator lights. Could be a fuse. Could be bad connection. Not something I'm too worried about at this point. Front brake handle works. Parking brake clip thing was bent out of shape, but that's now fixed and working. Front brake only works on one wheel. Other one seemed rusted in place (off). WD40 and hammer got it free, although still stiff. Cable might be broken as it doesn't move at all when the handle is pulled. Rear foot brake works but needs adjusting. Other handlebar lever doesn't budge. Not sure if that's a clutch lever or rear brake... If this is the 200 version, I gather it's got a centrifugal clutch so it would be a brake lever... But I'm not yet sure exactly which model I'm working with. And the cables all disappear under the plastics and fuel tank and I didn't bother trying to trace where it goes yet. Thats probably about it for this post.
  8. I have an 86 yfm250 (moto4 250) i picked up. It bogs and pops a bit out the tailpipe if you can even get it higher up in the rpm. It is pretty gutless. I have other 250’s (timberwolves) and its ultra gutless compared to them. It has an aftermarket carb on it that has a “W” on it Its not a mikuni but it looks close i figured jetting was off at the high end. i had a mimuni that was very crusty, swapped the main jet into the W carb, and the needle, which was set on low slot 4 so left it there. it actually ran much better, and cured what i thought was a problem caused by a lean condition from the W carbs main jet being too restricted when i compared to the factory mikuni I had it out and was enjoying the upper rpms that i couldnt reach before without bog. at wot it would fall on its face low top speed. after getting it hot, it would actually refuse to start after dying. back to the drawing board. when i first got it i adjusted the valves. So i retraced my work and thought maybe id overtightened. double checked, nope all good. .005 exh , .003 intake, check. So i checked the compression. here is the trickyness. help me understand this. I am at 3500ft asl in calgary canada - initiate test, it goes to 75psi right away. this is low. Even at my elevation im thinking 110psi minimum but....this thing starts no problem. even -20c it starts. makes no sense to me. so i press the starter again and it goes to 85. Then i press it again and no change. Then i turn over again and it jumps to 95. Then again...no change. Then again and it goes to 115. finally finishes at 120 and i cannot get it to go any higher than this. ive repeated this multiple times. i press and hold the starter...it will max at 75. Then a series of maybe 10 more quick turnovers from the starter and compression inches up to 120psi. So, i think the low compression explains the low top end, and even the backfiring out the exhaust when hot. The exhaust is rich enough (incomplete combustion in chamber) and to ignite in the muffler. it gets worse when hotter. makes me think i have a crack, or something that is low down on the cylinder wall. When the piston stops just above it on the upstroke, and i then turn it over again, it adds pressure to my tester reading. thoughts?
  9. I just got an old YFM200DX Moto 4 and upon checking the oil in the rear differential I took out I assume the fill plug and it fished out old nasty oil. I plan on flushing the oil and replacing but was wanting to make sure if you drain bottom plug and just fill up to the check plug. Only thing I can think of someone filled it up by the breather on top? Plan on unhooking the hose and blowing it out tomorrow. I also do not have a service manual yet. Also right now the diff vent hose just goes up under the tank to nothing. Does it plug into back hole in the air box? Thanks
  10. I have a 1987 Yamaha Moto4 250 I got cheaply off someone I know and got it running. Pretty much everything seems sound but the clutch doesn't disengage. It can still be ridden by just putting it into neutral when wanting to stop, but it is quite annoying. Anyone one have ideas?
  11. I recurrently got this moto4 250 and had to replace the timing chain. The bike runs and drives fine in low range but in high range it runs really rough (if at all) it normally just stalls.
  12. Picked up a 89 moto 4 250 for cheap a few years back from a friend that was moving. It ran and drove then, but wouldn't idle without quitting. Anyway, I pulled it out recently after it has been sitting to see if it would start with a new battery. It cranks but won't run. Fuel is getting to the carb from the fuel tank and I have good spark. If I pull the plug and pour a little gas in and replace the plug, it will run for a few seconds and quit. I figured it has to be carb related so I pulled the carb and have been inspecting it. There is some gunk in the bowl. The big jet looks ok, but I think the small one is completely clogged. I am guessing this would be enough for it not to start, correct? Am I on the right track? I like to dig into this kind of stuff but don't have much experience with small motors. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did order a carb rebuild kit on ebay with new seals and rings for putting it back together too.
  13. ok I have a 1987 Yamaha moto4 350 its been sitting for 10 years, I bought and put new battery in and had no spark. I cleaned stator, I bought a new starter silonoid, ignition, coil and wire, still NO SPARK!!! What am I missing? Plz help I need to download the service manual and it says I need comments on here so plz respond and maybe help me along the way. I'm at my wits end here I dont know what to do, can't afford bringing it to a shop
  14. Hello everyone ! I'm currently rebuilding my carburetor on my Yamaha moto 4 350 1987, first time I rebuild a carb 😅 ! It was leaking fuel from the overflow and inside the intake .... When I took off needle (the platic top part was stuck like crazy) I had a spring and inside the kit there is a spring, an O-Ring and a washer. Left is the needle that was in the carburetor and right is the new set (I already tried to mount it but it didn't felt right and I accidentally broke the o-ring) Anyway, I saw in some videos and diagram that there is no spring in here. So should I put the spring back ? And where ? On top of the needle or bottom ? This is an original Mikuni carb : Thank you ! Also if you have any additionnal tips please feel free to share I want to learn the proper way !
  15. Any luck with manuals? I need a carb in the owrst way and am have gone down a lot of rabbit holes (over 90 tabs and counting). Factory calls for a Mikuni BST34/1 (I think, but need to check manual). I don't care what or who makes the carb, just need a basic reliable carb. No Racing etc, just puttering. I currently only have the cable with the round slide attached. Don't care if its round if I know what other parts to get to make it all function. Thanks for help, and listening, gonna go chase more rabbits I guess. Max
  16. Looking for a carb for 87 moto4 200. Just bought the machine and it’s got a Chinese one that’s not working right even after I cleaned it out. Looking for the original mikuni vm22sf.
  17. What is the trick to remove the carburetor on a 1987 moto4 350?
  18. i have a 91 moto 4 100. has electric start only. for as long as i could remember we have always pushed start it. after riding for while you shut it off. you are able to hit the start button and it will start right up. anyone know where i should start with fixing this issue? im fixing it up for my niece. thank you in advance.
  19. Hi there, I am a new member and have never used a forum before. I own a 250 moto 4, has smoked since I got it. Oil consumption has increased, I removed the crank case breather pipe and have a catch can under frame at front. Smoke has not changed. also after more than 20 hrs use during lock down there is a very small amount of oil come out the breather. Compression seems very high, engine turns not too bad if stopped for up to 20 mins but much more than that it is difficult to turn engine past tdc. (poss almost hydrolocked?) if left for a couple of hours or more it then turns over easier. Also if spark plug is removed. I would have expected oil to come out when turning engine with spark plug out. I suspect oil is getting down valve guides? smoke is worst during warm up. The starter motor has not worked since before I owned it and I have modified pull start as the pressure on it was causing problems. I am about to check valve clearances this morning before I get going. I do not want to dismantle while lock down is on as I am using it daily. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Dave
  20. Hello, i have many questions but ill start with a few. 1. The yamaha 350 from 89ish- 93ish has this dual actuating throttle cable assembly. I can not find a replacement cable for it. One cable had rusted and broke. Do i need to update to the new carb style that has the single cable? If so this sucks because i just cleaned this one. 2. Has anyone found replacement struts/coil-overs for these moto 4s? 3. What cause oil residue in the starter gear housing? Is it normal? 4. Does anyone have a service manual? I hope to get answers to this stuff. Im the kind of guy that researches and never Have the opportunity to help people. Hopefully this thread will do just that.
  21. Rescued this thing from sitting in a warehouse the last two decades. Finally got it to fire, but when I put it into neutral to do so its now stuck in neutral, and wont shift no matter how much pushing, rocking, etc. Even with throttle it wont. Range lever on left side will go from H to L, but not to R, and this makes no difference on it being stuck in neutral. Any suggestions?
  22. I got this almost a year ago for $500.00 it was covered in a garage and owned by a 57 year old lady. She said she didn't need it anymore and wanted me to have it for my kids 1 of which is level 3 autistic. Ritual oil changes and yearly service. This was barely driven and when it was it wasn't beat on. All in all I got a killer deal on this wheeler and nothing is wrong with it. Starts and drives like its brand new.
  23. Just purchased one of these and I have a few questions: Went to change the air filter and it fell apart, but there were two pieces of the foam wrapping the wire cage - Normal? In addition there was about an inch of oil in the bottom of the air filter box - again - Normal? The backing piece of plastic for the wire cage was laying in the bottom of the filter box and the bolt was also in the oil. I am also looking for a recommendation on what to do with the machine as far as maintenance, it runs well, shifts fine, needs a new battery, but what else should I be checking? The previous owner had it for over 25 years and does not have any records or memory of the last oil change or any other maintenance other than needing to replace the battery a couple of years ago and placing a car battery on the front rack and running wires to the starter. Learning curve is sharp, but looking forward to the experience. Thanks for your input.
  24. Hey guys I have a Yamaha moto 4 250 that was running great now all of a sudden I have low power. It starts up and idles great and engine sounds fine no knocking or ticking or anything like that. I can ride it and sometimes its like you flicked a switch and the power comes back for a minute and then it goes away again. I've changed the spark plug, cleaned the carb and it made no difference. I'm thinking the stator could be going bad but id like to find out more before I spend the money on it.
  25. I have 2 1985 Yamaha yfm 200s the yellow bike runs great plug is nice and brown nothing worng with it the black one however runs like a bag of as* it Spitz out the carb it sputters runs real hot it's lean I know that but it literally has the identical carburetor every part of them is identical inside and out and no matter what I down I can't get it to richen out rather burn a whole lot of gas then burn the piston
