Just got back from a long weekend of riding out there. With the DCNR Pilot project they have used forestry roads and other roads to make connections to different areas. We were able to ride from the campground out to Colton Point state park to view the PA grand canyon. It was over 100 mile trip and fun.

I did prepare for that possibility of needing fuel. There is a small town called Germania which used to sell gas but had to stop because the fuel tanks went bad. They just got a grant to replace them. They also sell wheel cheese which is excellent. We made it round trip without re-fueling but Michelle's quad was low on fuel and the gauge was blinking. She still had reserve fuel if needed. Since this was the first trip with my new quad I was not sure how far I could go with it since the motor is bigger then my old quad so I attached these two gallon rotopax just in case. I added chains to the lid of my cargo box so the weight of the fuel doesn't flex the lid.

The tent trailer is a Jumping Jack. I posted about it here.

The "river" is called Pine Creek. Down in the gorge is a rail-trail

A few more pictures from the weekend. You can also ride into another state park called Lyman Run.

Recently opened you can ride to Denton Hill State Park, which was a ski area, closed in 2014 but is now being rebuilt. Now called "Denton Go" They have added camping sites and cabins and plans to re-open skiing in 2028.

So Awesome...Great pictures...So did you did not return to your camp tent at night...?   stayed on the trail?   Nice Artic Cat machine...My cousin was a corporate attorney for Polaris...He liked Artic Cat.

They have recently took back the company.   Did you carry a gun?   In Fla especially in some of the larger forrests like Ocala there are people who live in camps hidden in the forest.  They can e druggies and trouble.   The Governor DeSantis is cleaning them out but I am always scared about those types of people....I Carry!  Its legal in Fla.

Yes we returned to camp each night. I picked up this machine back in June as a 2 year brand new leftover, of course what I saved on the machine I spent on accessories :) But I figured why not, it is set up the way I want it. I did hear the original owner bought the company back. Thank God, Textron really fu*ked up the company. I have been a dedicated Arctic Cat owner for years and hated the idea of switching. Going to take time to turn it around. Parts are still a SOB to get. My girl's quad is down awaiting parts right now and probably won't be ready for the next camping trip. I do have a spare machine, my old one, a 2012 450 which she can use if needed.

Oh yeah I carry a gun. Here in PA you don't need a permit for open carry, conceal carry does require one.  Out in Northcentral PA people here are cool.

Two years ago I had three back to back camping trips, I was able to leave the trailer and quads at the campsite and go home unloaded. I left the tent and everything set up and nobody touched a thing. That saved a lot of time and fuel driving back & forth unloaded.

OPen carry!    I don't open carry...of course I have Concealed carry Permit...You will never see my gun until you see the flash from the muzzle.  Fla 'carry ' allows for carry of other weapons...I have a steel baton and a blade in my sleeve.  The trouble in Florida is I dont have much on to be able to conceal

Never took pictures of loading / unloading but here is one of their videos loading a side by side on.  The difference is I side load for two machines and my ramps are 8 feet and fixed.

The trail system we rode is a mix of woods and old strip mines.

Loading up for this weekend camp trip. (1 day early because it is going to rain here tomorrow)  These are my ramps. 8 feet, and the arch does help with loading.

May have time before I leave to post pixs, if not, when I return.

The longer ramps make it look less scary.   what is the weight of that rig? Where is Michelle's ATV?

The trailer plus tent is 1,200 pounds and I can put up to 1,500 pounds on the deck. Axle is rated for 3,300 pounds but because of the laws, the trailer is rated for 2,995 pounds. Here in PA (not sure of other states) A trailer rated over 3,000 pounds requires yearly inspection. I can also remove the entire tent and swing the wings vertical to make a utility trailer, but I have no need for that since I have two other trailers. My 8 foot ramps are no longer sold. They now sell 11 foot telescoping ramps instead.

Unfortunately Michelle cannot get out of work again this weekend, but she told me she WILL be going to the pig roast ride in 3 weeks.

Awesome. Beautiful  scenery.  Vintage cars also...'57 Chevy Bel-air  and '62 Ford Falcon??

Your trailer has to be 2200 lbs GVW (probably more)  You are towing with a Suburban.  That should handle it...

Sorry to be so stupid ...I have not been to the Honda training class as yet....But what is a Class I atv  Vs a Class II ATV as seen on the warning sign?

Don't know about the vintage cars, they pulled in while we were taking a break. Was cool to see so I had to take a picture.

My vehicle is a Tahoe, it is rated to tow 8,600 pounds (it has the towing package) it handles the trailer with ease. Since the trailer is single axle and under 3,000 it has no brakes, they are optional.

The classifications of ATV's is by DCNR so as we say "Its a Pennsylvania thing" Doesn't apply to other states.  Class 1 ATV is 50" wide and under 1,000 pounds. (so even some smaller side by sides are classified "1" )  Class 2 ATV is over 50" wide and over 1,000 pounds not to exceed 1,200 pounds.

DCNR is doing a major revision to the ATV policy now that this Northcentral Trail is up and running. Connections on this system utilizes township roads and some state routes so there has been "issues" with policy. If you have a light bar over your headlights, it has to be covered to ride the state routes (A PENNDOT rule)

There was an accident north of me last month, a woman was riding a side by side heading home, a truck was behind her, she hand signaled she was making a left turn and the driver thought she meant to pass her, the collision was fatal. They don't teach hand signals anymore to get a driver's license in PA.  I think one policy update will be a requirement for turn signals for UTV's since its harder to hand signal.

You know I hate light bars on trucks that are on highways!  I cannot see.   PA  drivers!... My close friend in College was from McKees Rocks  (Pittsburg)  He was very aggressive driver...You know the people from west PA are vasty different than the folks from east PA....Read Andersonville Prison written by an eyewitness during the Civil War.

I have been researching a Distant Cousin who died in Libby Prison during the Civil War. He was in the 21st Michigan Volunteer Infantry, it's been really an interesting search so far!

Mud riding is one of the most popular forms of ATV riding, but the wrong tires can leave you stuck fast in deep ruts and swampy trails. Choosing the best ATV tires for mud can dramatically improve traction, steering control, flotation, and overall off-road performance.
Whether you ride trails, mud parks, swamps, or backwoods terrain, this guide covers some of the top ATV mud tires available today and what makes them stand out.
What Makes a Good Mud ATV Tire?
Mud tires are designed with aggressive tread patterns and deep lugs that help clean out thick mud while maintaining traction. The best mud tires usually feature:
Deep tread lugs Wide spacing for self-cleaning Strong sidewalls Taller tire sizes for added clearance Durable construction for rough terrain 1. Maxxis Zilla

The Maxxis Zilla is one of the most popular ATV mud tires because it balances mud performance with trail comfort. It is lightweight, aggressive, and performs well in a variety of terrain conditions.
      Why Riders Like It
Excellent mud clean-out Lightweight design Smooth trail ride Available in many ATV sizes Best For: Trail riders who also spend time in mud.
      2. ITP Cryptid

The ITP Cryptid is designed for serious mud riding with deep tread lugs and strong sidewall construction. It provides excellent traction in deep mud while remaining durable on rough trails.
      Features
Deep aggressive tread 6-ply durability Strong side bite traction Great for lifted ATVs Best For: Deep mud and swamp riding.
      3. Outlaw 2 ATV Tires

The Outlaw 2 has become a favorite among hardcore mud riders thanks to its massive lugs and impressive pulling power in thick mud.
      Pros
Extreme mud traction Large tread design Excellent forward bite Popular in mud parks Cons
Rougher ride on trails Heavier than trail-oriented tires Best For: Dedicated mud machines and mud bogs.
      4. STI Out & Back Max

The STI Out & Back Max offers a solid balance between aggressive mud performance and everyday trail comfort.
      Highlights
Durable sidewalls Great traction in loose terrain Smooth handling Long tread life Best For: Utility ATVs and hunting machines.
      5. SuperATV Assassinator

The Assassinator is built for extreme mud riding and features huge paddle-style lugs capable of digging through the nastiest swamp conditions.
      Features
Massive tread depths Extreme mud traction Available in oversized setups Designed for hardcore mud riders Best For: Extreme mud builds and dedicated swamp riders.
Choosing the Right Mud Tire Size
      25-27 Inch Tires
Great for stock ATVs Less drivetrain strain Better acceleration 28-30 Inch Tires
Balanced performance More ground clearance Popular for trail mud riding 32+ Inch Tires
Maximum mud performance Best for lifted ATVs Ideal for deep swamp riding Larger tires may require clutch upgrades, lift kits, or gear reductions depending on your ATV.
      Bias vs Radial Mud Tires
      Bias Ply Tires
Stronger sidewalls Better puncture resistance Popular for aggressive mud riding Radial Tires
Smoother ride quality Improved handling Better trail comfort Most serious mud riders prefer bias-ply tires because of their durability in harsh terrain.
      ATV Mud Tire Maintenance Tips
Wash mud off after every ride Check tire pressure regularly Inspect sidewalls for damage Rotate tires periodically Avoid excessive pavement riding Lower tire pressure can improve mud traction, but beadlock wheels are recommended for very low PSI setups.
      Final Thoughts
The best ATV tires for mud depend on your riding style and terrain conditions. Riders who split time between trails and mud often prefer versatile tires like the Maxxis Zilla, while hardcore mud riders typically choose aggressive options like the Outlaw 2 or Assassinator.
Before upgrading to oversized mud tires, make sure your ATV can handle the added weight and drivetrain stress. Proper setup can dramatically improve your ATV’s performance in deep mud and swamp terrain.

      Hello all!
I was given a 2000 Suzuki Quadrunner 500 (Quad 500 Runner?) and its current state is a bit of a mystery!
Kept indoors but hasn't been run in 5 years.  We're not trying the engine until the gas is replaced, and the tires are reinflated. But the previous owner said their only issue was stalling when shifting to reverse without giving some throttle.
      I'm optimistic!  See y'all around!

A few weeks ago, I foolishly asked my girlfriend about a quad that's been sitting under a tree at her parents' place for 25 years... This thread will be a sort of log of my attempt to resurrect it. I'm actually a computer guy, not a mechanic, so this will be quite conical for some of you, I'm fairly sure 🤣
So far I've found out it's likely a 200. Not sure what year yet... The frame has a serial of 53J-001343 (I think). Engine appears to have the same number.
We inflated the tyres on Saturday, which were still up today, so that seems a win. This also confirmed that the wheels do turn, as it rolled back into its 25 year old indentations as the 4th tyre started coming up.
Oil looks used but otherwise OK. I'll change it if I actually get it running, but looks good enough for attempting to start it up again.
Fuel tank had.... something in it. It smelt more like old stagnant water than fuel of any sort. Drained that out and flushed some clean fuel through to be sure.
Fuel tap was jammed in the off position. WD40 and some force got it free. Did that after the fuel hose was off, so hopefully the carb isn't full of whatever it was in the ttank.
Engine turns fairly easily with the rope start. Made typical exhaust puffing sounds.
Unfortunately the rope mechanism was not fully rewinding, so I was limited to about half its length... And today it jammed fully pulled out. I attempted to remove the rusty screws, but one stripped it's head out. So for now the rope rewind is jammed.
Spark plug connector seems possibly burnt inside. Black crap on both the plug and up in the connector, and the connector doesn't seem to actually stay on.
Throttle lever is stuck fast. See photo for possible reason... Cable also feels jammed. I assume the throttle itself is jammed. That'll be fun given my skill level.
Electrical stuff all seems dead. No headlights. No starter. No indicator lights. Could be a fuse. Could be bad connection. Not something I'm too worried about at this point.
Front brake handle works. Parking brake clip thing was bent out of shape, but that's now fixed and working. Front brake only works on one wheel. Other one seemed rusted in place (off). WD40 and hammer got it free, although still stiff. Cable might be broken as it doesn't move at all when the handle is pulled.
Rear foot brake works but needs adjusting.
Other handlebar lever doesn't budge. Not sure if that's a clutch lever or rear brake... If this is the 200 version, I gather it's got a centrifugal clutch so it would be a brake lever... But I'm not yet sure exactly which model I'm working with. And the cables all disappear under the plastics and fuel tank and I didn't bother trying to trace where it goes yet.
Thats probably about it for this post.
