NEED HELP with my polaris Xplorer 400 - problem going into reverse.

Recommended Posts

My 97 xplorer 400 is having trouble going into reverse. I'm new to atving and dont know a lot about the vehicle but i'll try to explain my problem in as much detail as possible. Firstly when i'm trying to reverse i need to make sure the engine is idling as low as possible, otherwise it wont go into reverse all together is that normal? Once the engine is at a low idle, I put it in reverse and the atv will start backing up but then just stops like it lost its grip on the chains. Many times i cant even get it into reverse, i need to go forward, and then quickly jam it into R for it to actually work.

I'm thinking it's a transmission problem but i have no idea if i'm right or what to do to fix it...

Any help????

Also just for my own knowledge (might be a stupid question...), my 4x4 only works when i put it in low gear. If i keep it in the standard forward gear even with my 4x4 button pushed in the 4x4 will never engage. Is that normal?

Looking forward to the help!

Thanks

Hmm...well sounds to me like it's having difficulty engaging and could be because of issues with your clutch. That's a possibility, You may need a rebuild kit like: https://www.erlandsonperformance.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=EPI&Product_Code=WE210165

You may want to take the belt cover off and see what's going on in there. Check for metal filings. Here are some schematics that are available online: 1997 Polaris ATV Parts for XPLORER 400L - W97CC38C, Engine & Exhaust - CLUTCH COVER XPLORER 400L W97CC38C

Buy yourself a manual.

Here is a video on how a Polarius clutch works:

Hi, I am having issues with my TRX350D fuel pump.  It suddenly stopped running so I have replaced all the fuses and cleaned all the terminals.  I have fitted a new pump, fuel cut-off relay and rectifier.  Still nothing!!  The pump runs when attached to a battery.  The engine will start on the choke and the filter fills with fuel but it will  not rev and dies when the choke is closed. I have power to the relay but nothing at the pump black/white wire when cranking the engine.  Any ideas where to go from here would be very much appreciated!!

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

From Arkansas. Just bought a 2012 Gator 850i RSX because I could not pass up the price. BUT it has an idle problem. So, to be honest, I joined just to get a service manual. I have a choice: 1)Buy a hard copy: ~$100; 2)Buy a CD ~$35.00; Get a direct download for free posting 10 times; or get a download for $29.00 (subscription). Haven't decided what to do yet.

So I've got a Hisun 550 that I was doing some work on that required removing the CVT and it's housing. Upon attempting to reinstall the clutch, sheaves, etc, I found that the belt no longer fits - it's far too wide. None of the parts have been replaced, they're all OEM. Exactly the same parts as what I took off a few weeks ago.
To be more specific, my belt is 1.25in wide, but the gap between the clutch and the primary sheave is only 7/8in wide. I'll include a few photos to explain.
Has anyone ever experienced such a bizarre problem? Any help at all would be appreciated, I've been stuck on this for a month. I'm open to just about any suggestion.
