2004 Sportsman won't start

I'm working on a friends 500 sportsman. the oil tank cracked as he was riding and of course lost all oil. The engine shut down but not due to seizure as it still turns over freely. I have replaced the oil tank and oil. I'm thinking that there is a sensor which shuts down the engine when starved of oil and something needs to be replaced or reset? Can anyone help?

      Has anyone had a suzuki 230 quad lock the engine up?  Its a well maintained bike, it locked up when my son was riding it. Pulled the plug, it has connected with the piston. I'm thinking the con rod let go.  I don't have a service manual.  Does the engine need to come out to check further?
