My atv broke down 4 months ago and I cranked it every other week and had no problem. Now I got every thing put back together and tried to start it and now I am not getting any fire to the spark plug . Anyone have any ideas ?

1. Make sure the engine has the correct spark plugs and they’re gapped correctly. This might seem silly, but seemingly big problems are sometimes caused by the simplest thing.

2. Check the spark plug wire condition.

3. Disconnect the main electrical connector coming out of the engine, and then check for spark again. This unhooks the kill switch, ATV ignition switch and wiring for those switches. If the spark improves, the problem is within wiring from one of those switches or a switch itself is to blame. Now you’ll need to disconnect each switch (one at a time) to trace it to the failed part.

4. Test the stator resistance. You can get the specs from a dealer or try a search online.

Dealers don’t accept returns on electrical parts, so be sure the part you order is to blame, you could be stuck with a brand new, expensive ignition part and still dont have spark. Think of your friends and riding partners who have the same or similar quad, you might be able to borrow parts from their machines to diagnose the problem.

Ignition coils. Measure the resistance between the primary (low-tension) wire and ground or ground terminal. It should be very low. Like .5 to 1.5 Ohms. The primary wire is the small wire going to the CDI box or points. Next measure the secondary (high-tension) wire and ground. (Note that on most bikes these days, the coil mounting bar, that passes through the coil and mounts it to the frame, is the ground for the coil primary and secondary wires.) This should be quite high, like 6000 to 13000 ohms. If the coil is out side the specs given in the shop manual the coil might be bad. Sometimes, a coil will work OK when cool but fail when it warms up. Let them cool and they work again. Also check your battery itself....

Check the stator, Standard : 50-250 ohm

disconnect the black/red wire check the resistance from the black/red wire to the ground)

( disconnect 2 piece connector and check the resistance to the ground)

I disconnected the electrical connector and still no spark. i do not know how to check the stator resistance. Is there a way to test the ignition coil?

Exactly what kind of machine is this? Someone may be able to get you more specific testing specs if we know exactly what you have.

You need a digital multimeter to check resistance on the stator, you need the same thing to test the coil and all the other tests that Pete suggested. Also, double check all your wiring for loose or corroded connections.

check your kill switch it may have shorted out im guessing need to know what type of bike would help.

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a really Heavy Duty ATV cover. I have bought several and they do keep the water off somewhat, but they are very thin and do not contour with the shape very well and water pools up in the rack louvers. I think i may be looking for a heavy canvas one, if anyone has a recommendation it would be greatly appreciated.

So we are almost a month into winter and I've been so busy working on my house that up until today, I didn't realize that we just haven;t gotten any real snow yet to warrant putting the plow on my grizzly. So that got me thinking, what are the latest plows out there and what ATV plows are the best? I've got 2 snow plows for my grizzly, a quadboss pile driver atv plow set up and a snowsport ATV plow. They are both a bit dated now and I tend to stick with the snowsport due to ease of use and I just like it so much. So if you have a plow on your ATV, please let us know what it is and post a picture with your atv/plow would be awesome. Would also like to know what you like and dislike about it.
This is back a while when I did a write up on these 2 plows.... in 2009 I got the snowsport and in 2012 I got the quadboss.
