Kazuma Cougar 250 - Starting Problems

I have a Kazuma 250 cougar. When I bought it the starter worked but I had to replace the battery. Then I had some smoke come from where the starter bolts up and then I needed a new starter put one and and it works but the starter doesn't turn the motor over. I can hear the starter ingauge and turn the sprocket but it's not turn it over any help would be greatly apperciated

there could be a series of gears from where the starter bolts on, then on to the flywheel ...

it runs fine if you pull start it?

yes i can pull start with no problems it will run fine the starter even works turning the chain and the gear that is connected to just isn't turning the flywheel.

Maybe there the ring gear on the flywheel came off or the flywheel keyway sheared off?

is there any where i can look at a manual or exploded view of parts list. Tried to find one on here but no luck
