Yamaha Warrior Question, Engine Issues

I purchased a used 2001 Yamaha Warrior, and the owner stated all it needed was a starter (friend of a friend type deal). I installed the starter and it turns over, however, during starting there is a loud knocking sound. The sound goes away after it starts. I removed the side cover to review the gears, and they all appear okay, with no missing teeth on the gears, and nothing visably loose. Any ideas? Appreciate any help.

I would take it back apart and double check everything. It sounds like it is definately an issue with the starter. From what you said the noise goes away after the starter disengages.

Not sure on your model, but Ive seen ring gears break the spot welds holding them to the flywheel. This was primarily on automotive applications, but its something to check. Make sure the ring gear is attatche solidly, or if its bolted, make sure none of the bolts are loose or broken. Also, check the ring gear closely for ubstructions, dings or cracks that might not be easily seen during a quick visual inspection.
