This has been a frustrating one to figure out, but long story short I've replaced just about every component on the machine and I'm still not getting spark. Or at least not how it suppose to work...

When the engine is turning over it does not spark at all, but sometimes when I let off on the start button it will spark just once. I've played with this numerous times and it will only generate a spark like this. I've seemed to somehow come to the conclusion that this correlates to the engine or crank "rocking" backwards. Depending on where it is in the stroke the crank will rotate back in the opposite direction when the starter motor dis-engages.

I thought maybe I had a polarity problem, but this is where I'm stuck. If it is indeed a polarity problem what could cause it?

If it's not a polarity problem is it just categorized as a "weak" spark issue?

Everything seems to ohm out fine, continuity checks at each plug check out, etc, etc....

Throw me some ideas. PLEASE!

01 Big Bear 400.

Ignition coil, stator, pickup, regulator, wire harness, ECU..... all replaced.... :sadly: lol I beginning to wonder if the stator came bad. I need to validate the kill switch and the ignition key switch still.

Not OEM. You think the aftermarket one might have it backwards at the connector?

Here is what the connector wiring is (per the manual)

R= Solid Red

W/L = White w/blue

W/G = White w/ Green

W/R = White /Red

well, on mine, there were 2 wires coming out of the engine, a red and white with a connector on the end. when the connection was met, the wires are red to red, white to white, i was told to switch the wires and after i did, i had spark ... maybe a longshot but worth a try ... did your instructions say anything about switching the wires?

might be onto something. If these two wires are the charging/direction wires and I'm only noticing spark when the engine "rocks backwards" then maybe they are wired incorrectly from the stator supplier.

it might be that they are wired right, but not able to wire them the same as oem due to copyrights or pattens ... i never saw that i had to reverse the wires until a buddy looked at the little piece of paper that came with the stator, then we tried it and it worked ...

As it turns out the R & blue/white were reversed (on the stator side). I had to unpin them from the connector and switch around and what do you know..SPARK!!

Thanks the help guys. Hopefully thins can help someone in the future.

I replaced my stator and put the cover on it, started right up. However the gear shift lever will not move. I attached two pics of both the crankcase and crankcase cover. In the pic with crankcase cover there is on item I am pointing at with a screwdriver. It looks like a deformed fork with two fingers. What orientation is that supposed to be when closing the case?? byter1 at gmail.com for direct emails.

Hey guys and gals. I've been working on my friends 2007 big bear IRS. Unfortunately after 3 different people got their hands on it and only made things worse every time.  After months of finding just crazy problems everywhere. I'm finally at the point we're its almost 100% !!! But I'm getting a short somewhere between the 4xW switch I believe. I managed to by searching the internet like a  fiend, got my hands on an official Yamaha wire harness for the year and make. But I don't have the numbered component list and to be honest. After hours of going through and making everything so it's  easy to reference. If anyone has a picture of the referenced components. I would be forever in your debt. I've spent hours marking up the blown up diagram so it will be easy, for any possible future repairs. Please and thank you. Here's a picture of what i have so far.  Unsealed it in plastic so oil and crap won't spill or get smudged. This damn things worth it's weight in gold.              Thanks Jeff                2007 Yamaha big bear 400 IRS.       YFM40FBW

My 1992 TRX00 recently stopped firing.  I understand this is a common problem. I have ordered an aftermarket CDI unit.    TJ

      Hey everyone,
I’m having an issue with my 2021 Polaris Sportsman 570 – the engine keeps stalling after running for about 10–15 minutes. I’ve checked the air filter, spark plug, and fuel lines, but can’t seem to find the root of the problem. It starts up just fine, but then loses power suddenly.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with this model/year? Would appreciate any advice or troubleshooting tips you’ve tried that worked. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey all, new to the forum! I just bought a 1998 Kawasaki bayou 300, 4x4 not running. Initially I found no spark. Ended up playing with the plug wire (made sure plug top and wiring was touching) and got spark yesterday and the quad fired up off ether. Come to work on it today and now no spark again. Before I got spark and now today if I touch the plug after cranking I get shocked, and it will spark after I release the starter button. I was jumping the quad with a freshly charged car battery that has 12v while cranking. Cleaned out the kill switch and ignition button. All looks good. Purchased new plugs. They're are a lot of wires cut/ disconnected. But shouldn't matter if I got spark without them connected...
