i recently took a trade for a 2005 brute force 750 replaced the belt had the clutch cleaned changed the oil and adjusted idle on carb rode it the other day noticed that it was blowing white smoke out of the exhaust pipe and running like crap. it has thirty inch mudlites i expected to loose a lil bit of power with the size of the tires but its acting like it has the power of a 400 or less cc can any body tell me were to start and what to start with as far as the power, performance and the smoking issue

thanks.

Does it pop or backfire? What condition was it in when you got it was it running good? Did it run good after the belt change? Did the quad go into limp mode before changing the belt? For the white smoke is it all the time? Check the coolant level. Was there any sign of white spots in the old oil you changed or in the new oil since you did the oil change and rode the quad? Is the quad over heating ? Have you checked the plugs & air filter. The more info you can give the better. The carbs may need cleaning. You said you adjusted the idle on the carb which is one knob for both carbs. Also the BF has 2 carbs with dual carbs on a V-twin they have to work together if the carbs are out of adjustment they have to be synchronized which is an adjustment made by hooking up a sync tool to the carbs and there is a adjustment screw to balance out the carbs.

it does back fire and pop its was prolly running about the same when i first got it improved a little bit after changing oil and belt and having clutched cleaned actually idles like it has some power but when you hit the throttle it just seems like its working on half power like something its missing. It does pop and back fires a little bit as far as the white smoke defiantly smokes when idles and when you hit the throttle not to sure if it does when its in motion haven't looked. Coolant level is good there wasn't any when i first got it put coolant in the resiovor i did ride it before the belt smoked and temp gauge was going off and shut down but the cluster doesn't work so not sure if it was a true temp reading. as of right now it hasn't over heating since then. haven't checked the plug but the air filter does have oil spots in not sure if it was recent or from a previous time. as far as the carbs go i adjusted the screw knob on the side of the engine to get it back to regular idle how would i go about adjusted the carbs and knowing if they are out of sync. i was wondering if it could be a deeper problem than the carbs like a valves or rings that might be bad on it. do you have any ideas of were i should start with this one.

Did you do the belt replacement or a dealer? When the belt smoked or slipped it sounds like it was wore out it can cause the quad to go into limp mode which kills the power. It will pop and backfire have no power. I had the prairie 650 an 05 BF might be different for resetting it to get it out of limp mode. Do a internet search on how to reset it and give it a try . I would check that first since you had a belt problem. Then move on from there.

did a little bit of research on limp mode it dosent seem like it is in limp mode because it revs fine just smokes and when your riding feels like its only running on half power. I had the dealer replace the belt and clean the clutch and when in idle it feels and sounds like it has pleanty of power just when you ride it it might be doing thirty mph if that but the cluster is not working so no way to tell real speed. Do you think the rings could be bad since it is smoking and poping when you hit the trottle or could it be the carbs or a deeper problem in the engine. Dont really know the previous history on it just what the guy i got it from has told me he said he replaced the belt but the belt was to warn to have been replace in the time period that he said he done it

Pull the spark plugs and see what they look like. Spark plugs can be a good sign to go by. Does anything work on the gauges? If not make sure its plugged in. If the front plastics have been pulled off or changed it may have got left unplugged. Check the fuses. You need to find gas smell problem. Check all the fuel lines make sure the choke is working. Is it popping back thru the carbs or just the exhaust? Does it have the stock pipe & air filter? To run big tires you need an aftermarket clutch kit and heavy duty belt. If it has an aftermarket pipe or air filter the carbs may not be jetted right. I know with cars a blown head gasket will cause white smoke and coolant will mix with the oil and cause white deposits in the oil. Caught early enough it can be fixed by replacing the head gaskets that's with cars Im not sure if it works the same in quads. With rings you have a blue to somewhat dark smoke not white.

Ill pull the plug this weekend and get back with on ya the condition of it. Only thing that i know of that works on the gauge is fuel and temp and not sure how true they are. The choke defiantly works somebody told me that the brute is very cold nature but it shouldnt be that cold nature i had a honda that i knew was cold nature and it started better than this one. the last time i checked the carb it sounded like it was back firing through them but ill double check this weekend and get back with on it ill probably tare it down and see if i can see any physical signs in the carbs the pipes appear to be stsock and the same with the air filter i did notice that the air filter had black oil spots on it from previous use any idea what that could be and im pretty sure that clutch is stock and the belt i believe is standard for the brute the dealer said that's the only one they order and know of to order for that bike.

I know more this weekend and come back with more details of what i found cause im kinda getting worried that i got screwed

I went searching and read its been as simple as the carbs needing cleaned and a sticking choke plunger in one of the carbs. To it being a head gasket. Still pull the plugs and take a look from there I would go to the carbs first for cleaning and adjustment these are the cheap things. If that don't cure it then you may want to look into the head gaskets. Does the smoke have an oder to it. coolant , oil or fuel? If your losing coolant out of the radiator or over flow jug that would be a good sign of a head gasket.

      New member here,
I have searched here and other places and have not found an answer to my problem.   As the title says I have a 2014 420 Rancher that recently started having an issue were the revs before the clutch engages.
I have checked the oil level (per the service manual) and replace the Valvoline ATV 10w40(less than 5 hours) with 10W30 GN4 for good measure. I have used the "pin" method to pull a DTC.  I shows a 8-1 which is a TPS error.  This makes some sense, as if the computer doesn't read throttle position correctly, it could have this symptom. I have checked the source voltage, and tested the TPS off the quad with a Fluke and a power supply at 5v.  It is smooth and does not seem to be a bad sensor. I am confused by the DTC, because the PS light blinks the code, not the check engine light.  However, there are no PS codes of that value.   This condition appeared after a couple days of driving in the cold (~32°) and driving though some water/bogs.
A couple questions.  First has anyone seen this issue, and do you have any suggestions? I have followed the troubleshoot right up to the point of replacing the ECU, which I don't seem to have one on the shelf :)
Second, anyone used a OBDII reader with an a 4pin adapter to pull codes?  If so, what system do you use?
Beyond the rev issue, the quad runs and starts perfectly and when it decides, the clutch grabs tight (no slipping)

I have a 420 Rancher I deeded to chage out the battery after doing so, It will not shift gears in forward and in reverse it runs like the engine is flooded It was fine before I change out the battery.?
this is the 420 with automatic transmission This happens if in auto or manual I have run out things to check.

I just purchased the ATV and it run really rough with the breather filter on and lid on the breather box. Once I take the lid off and remove the filter it runs better but it backfires through the carb.
What could I do to fix this.
      The carb is fairly new.
And I put high grade non ethanol gas in it hoping it would help some.
