  1. Got a 04 Sportsman 500 that wasnt running- owner said it needed a stater and a new battery.  It ran rough (been sitting out in the weather for a while).  A friend and I started by adding a new battery and it would start barely with the choke and his hand over the air-filter.  I decided to install the new battery in the holder on the side.  we had it on the rack because the old on was still in the bike.  I tried to be nifty by turning the battery to put the terminals in an easier spot to get to, but forgot to reverse the cables too.  In a sentence, I reversed the positive and negative on the battery like a dummy.  When we discovered my mistake and corrected it, we turned on the bike, but the display did not light up and the key did not turn on the starter.  jumping the solenoid worked the starter, so we thought the solenoid just burned up when I reversed the pos and neg...  new solenoid and no difference.  what have I burned up?  Also, the shifter does not seem to do anything in the trans.  it slides back and forth like its stripped in the trans.  any help would be appreciated!!

I think the biggest issue right now is the electrical.

It was the shaft and a gear in the ol tranny,

    here is a update log:

When we drive your bikes like we stole them they're gonna get broken. But I wouldnt drive them any other way ;)

It always seem we run into problems but I usually go with bigger groups, I should start to bring a few axles on hand with me lol.

lol yea but there is such a thing as abusing your bike (awesomely fun) and never fixing anything on it- just patching up to work and going speeds over 70mph for a long period of time and just cooking the motor....(my friend does this)

Ha yea definitely need extra parts and tools. So it’s all good now ?

If you can’t ride it like you want then what’s the use in having it ?

    yea.  exactly.👍👍👍😎

i try to speak english sorry. je parle francais d'habitude ;)

    im new on this site.

my yfm350fwt 1987 have grinding noise inside front differential when i turn in mud. i know one seal is leaking and maybe the oil level is low. can this low oil level create this problem or its regular problem of this atv model ?

    thanks

If oil can get out, mud and other crap can get in.  especially if its a cv boot

Oh ok, dam that hurts man.  Well good luck with the rebuild and make sure the head or cylinder is not warped from heat when you break it down and post some pics! I love to see pics.  You found  the right forum to help you out if you need!

    Good luck brother.

    what he said...

Most of them trailers come with the lock washers and nuts which really hold up well. But honestly I like the idea. Heck you have to put it together anyway might as well add a few drops on the bolts along the way! And it’s not like you can’t get it off.

    Great idea I think.

When it’s together let see it !

I agree.  You might as well use lock tight since your the one assembling it.

That background looks great, I could only imagine riding let alone hunting out there!

I think I may dedicate a little time this year to a few road trips !!!!

    I wish...

  7. I have never ridden a 2 stroke anything so I better not say too much not knowing anything about 2 strokes...  I've always herd that 4-strokes are all around better and hence have avoided 2-strokes...  I've heard that 2 doesnt stay cool as well and hence has overheating issues after a longer ride...?  And 2s only get but so big where as 4s go to 1000cc, that will always win over a 2, but I wouldn't know much other than that...?  please correct me if I'm wrong

  8. I had a friend that has a Honda recon 250 es and he coudnt get the bike out of reverse into drive without revving the bike and slamming it into drive before it got going to fast...  I adjusted the idle (it was idling wayyy too fast) and problem solved.  dunno if this is your problem but if its not getting down to that good 'ol putt putt idle, u might be keeping too much friction in your clutch causing tension and hard gear change..

Well you can wire the lights to both come on, high beams and low together.  Thats really not a big deal.  But have you ever thought about putting an extra pair of lights maybe LED type ? With a switch or wire them in series with the low beams so you can have the low beams on with the new led’s as well? Bolt on type?

I would do that to if I were in your shoes.  I am getting an older sportsman 500 with the square headlights....  I'm just gonna do away with the halogen crap and replace them with small light bars (soooo much more light and uses less juice)

2 things come to mind. 1) check the ETC in the throttle. Make sure there is a gap between the contacts at idle or you can just unplug the wires coming from it.

    2) the idle mixture screw or the idle speed screw need adjusting.

got a friend with an 02 sportsman that has this same issue with the ETC and he has never really figured it out...(he doesnt really care about the bike so he just keeps his thumb on the throttle when he wants it running- a pain for me to run tho since im not used to never coming to a complete idle..lol  could you expound on this more maybe?  what is the ETC? and what does it do?

I've checked the ETC, and its good, I also unplugged it and tried it, the idle speed screw I have adjusted, but I haven't checked the idle mixture screw, should that be at 2 1/2 out?

oh never mind thats not the problem.

right now everything is better than my bike lol

LOL thats how I feel about my bike rn

My friend has a sportsman 500 that he abused badly (jumping, jacked up carb to make it 70+ mph, mudding with no snorkel, winding it out, u name it) anyway it seems that whenever we go riding, we always come back early, and towing his bike....  This happen much with you?

  12. haha!  yea I bought my 6in light from my friend for $14 the day I got the bike.  The same friend found me a 04 sportsman 500 not running for $1200 (needs a stater and a battery) so I cant wait to get it fixed up with a lift kit, led headlights, and bigger tires....might even put a snorkel on it if I like it enough....will put pics on here as I'm doin stuff!  I'm going to pick it up this thursday (he lives in AL and I live in VA).  heres a pic he sent me:
