my 2012 big bear 400 is hard shifting can anyone help me
-
Hey all! I recently acquired an 02 big bear 400 this past summer, carb on it was shot to sh** (pics attached) so my father recommended I just buy a new one off amazon. I purchased the first one that came up as compatible and once it came in, I bolted it in and it fired right up with no noticeable issues. Once I got to the trails with it I realized that on any un-level ground, there's little power output. I checked with 3 different local shops and they all refused to work on tuning up off brand carbs because of how terrible they are. One shop had a motorcycle in with an aftermarket carb and the mechanic said that that would be me if I brought my big bear in. Whoever owned the motorcycle and needed their aftermarket carb tuned up had racked up the bill to nearly $1500. Needless to say he made it clearly obvious that putting any amount of money into an aftermarket carb is not worth it. Now that I've learned all of this, I'm wishing I didn't toss the old carb for a $30 amazon one. In light of this minor f-up does anybody have any recommendations for high quality carbs for my vehicle? I've also attached pictures of the old carb and its condition for your curiosity, although its current condition is likely 6 feet under in a landfill somewhere. https://www.ebay.com/itm/283488113569?_skw=Big+Bear+400+Carburetor+Oem&epid=10042848409&itmmeta=01JCDWCTMJX5GBC407RF2PPVDD&hash=item42013553a1:g:INUAAOSwn8llquIL&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAABAHoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKkIMhqd%2Fye0vA0YMR5DUzMoCLl0F9GPNRfuAJKaylVqqyVrZCBJVvXQaPrlosjt%2FZnIHyIRPuGiIbxC9o%2B02UqGA4YqXDyyH4bVebnTPz8P5Elg76CvLdu3KyZgwpgpSeYJK2IOWtlo9vtTld7RVjqPwSv1VF26v6kyXGesAB%2BA%2BCHsj3OnqNrHMyKCBuDMSSvUWvOfq%2BKsZKqyHR7yduef%2BHBlXvfiyRJPThHr7Ge9n%2BHBbuxRCb4oF7%2Fp8oZsvajHy9YDitFRfNJeeAssYbgXuhAc7AVvUZZ2YxKW9GzDdxltLMap8orKJtr%2BIk0SRGQ%3D|tkp%3ABFBMsqqzvONk I found this one on EBAY that advertises as a genuine OEM part for a fraction of the $650 that they're normally worth. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I got my no spark issue sorted out, got it running on the old aftermarket carb, but it didn't want to take throttle even after cleaned it, didnt really want to waste time on it, so I order a new one which is on its way, so not much to post here, but I wanted to start a new thread. I am stating to clean up the plastics thought I might as well do that while they are off, they were a mess tree sap, bird dropping, mold and what ever. Washed them good and got all off so I could see the oxidation , decided to wetsand with 600 grit waterproof sandpaper, and used Armour All instead of water. I figured it could put some of the moisture back in that was lost from sun exposure. Working fairly well I will keep going finer on the grit and see if it will polish

Hello I am new to this forum and I just had Big Bear 400 given to me for free. I am in the process of tear down to begin rebuild. I have 75% of the parts to be in rebuild but what I am lacking is a good manual. I have the Haynes manual but it appears to be very generic. I am in need of a real good manual with plenty of details. Can anyone help?? Thanks much Stewart

I just brought home a used 2005 Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4. It needs front wheel bearings, and a new choke cable. I think i can handle those two items. However, when i went to look at it, it ran good, shifted good, brakes all workds great, but at home when i started it, it would idle nice, but when i gave it gas it seemed like it was flooding out and would die. If i just gave it a little throttle it built up RPMs but any more throttle it began dying out again. any suggestions why it's doing that? I'm looking for a service manual, but forum rules say i have to make 10 posts..lol oops...i just realized i posted in the wrong section of the forum!!

Finally getting around to the Yamaha Big Bear that followed me home in August. It is a mess. I got it off of marketplace, the add stated " runs like nothing is wrong the only thing that's wrong is it needs a new wiring harness". So iv been looking for a new wiring harness although it came with a wiring harness that was out of the bike, so I assumed he had ripped it out. All the plastics were off and no screws or bolts to reinstall but they were in good shape. The coil, voltage regulator and starter solenoid was missing but came with new one. So I go out expecting to start installing the wiring harness and find out its still in tact with these parts missing. The first thing I found was the engine was stuck and there was no spark plug in it. I noticed when I bought it that the pull starter wouldn't rotate the engine but he assured me the engine wasn't stuck that there was something wrong with the pull starter, I was skeptical but took him at his word. I didn't check it that closely because I was really just buying it for the tires and wheels they were worth twice what I paid for the bike. Im a little new at buying on marketplace and am just angry that someone would lie like that, now I don't know if anything is really wrong with the wiring harness, im probably too trusting I usually trust people until they give me a reason not too. I would have bought it anyway, if I go to the trouble of hooking up my trailer and wench and driving there its coming home with me, long as its a Honda or Yamaha I can fix it. It took PB Blaster about 24 hr and I got the engine freed up, and it has good compression, using ye ole thumb over the hole test, and the pull starter works fine Thats enough of that, now for my real question, before I go to the trouble of chasing the wiring problem down I would like to see if the engine is ok , is there anyway to feed voltage directly into the cdi to make it spark.

I recently got a great deal on a 2001 Big Bear 400 4x4.it sat in a barn for 2 years while the guy was in college,so it need carb work...got it to use around the property, not racing or anything crazy with it It runs GREAT and strong..no smoke or funny noises, just seems to have an issue at times ,when you hit the throttle it want's to die ,most of the time it runs strong. So am debating a rebuild kit or new oem carb...i got to looking around really good yesterday and found this broke off..( the bent tube where the pencil is pointing).... is this a part that comes with a new carb?..if not,,where can i get the part? I found a diagram online but it does not show the bent tube with a nut on it but says it a "Starter set" in the diagram(Number 21 in the diagram) I checked the petcock and it is getting plenty of fuel flow..but it has the common drip leak..so i am ordering a new one,..was going to get the seal kit but for the price it is about the same price as a whole new petcock Just trying to figure out where i can get this part for repair

Hello, Acquired a used big bear 400 4x4 that would not start and debugged to compression issues. Tore down the head and determined the lower jug and piston were no good. Cleaned everything up well, got a lower new jug, piston, and all o ring / gaskets, and reassembled. Head bolts tightened to 30ft lbs which is slightly beyond spec of 29, but not grossly over. ATV started right up after fix, but after idling about 5 mins, I noticed a small amount of oil weeping from the front bottom of the jug; you can see occasional oil bubbling out to surface through gasket. Note: I did ensure to include the rubber o ring on the bottom of jug. I also get white smoke, which appears to be coming out the spark plug side of the head gasket. The head gasket was a 3 ply metal gasket. When I originally tore down the cylinder, there was black residue on all gasket mating surfaces. Should I have used a little gasket sealant on all gaskets? Everything I read seemed to indicate this should not be required. Looking for advice to help prevent these leaks assuming I tear back down and redo a second time. Thanks

Does any one know how to replace the shift pedal on a 2007 yamaha big bear 400? The ball broke off the back of the pedal. It looks like just an e clip holds it on but it doesn't look like there is enough room to get it off after you remove the clip. Do you have to raise the engine or is the bracket with the pin that it is mounted to removable? I haven't looked at it too close yet, just happened today while trying to plow snow. Thanks in advance for any info.

I have a yamaha big bear 400, tested all fuses and relays. When I turn on key I get nothing, no neutral light or headlights. Could it be the key switch bad?

Hello, I'm new to the forum and really need some help. Last week I was driving my big bear and everything was working as it should, at the end of the day I shut it off and the starter would not restart the bike, I checked the battery and it was dead. There was good power coming from the stator and the battery was good so I ordered a voltage regulator. New regulator came in and it was charging but letting through to much voltage so it was returned and I got a different regulator from a different company. Now with the regulator plugged in the bike would idle but if you hit the gas it would backfire and stutter and if you let off it would return to idle normally, if I run the bike without the new regulator it runs like the day it came from factory. I plugged in my first regulator that started this problem to check voltage again and now the bike has weak spark and will not start with a booster pack or the pull start. Any help would be appreciated as I drove the bike with the regulator out with no issues until I started trying to put in the new regulators. Thank you

hi folks - Today I installed a new starter for my 2001 big bear. 400 The old starter has been dead for several years but I'm just too old now to be yanking that pull cord any more. Here's my issue: When I pushed the start button the starter turned over ... and kept going - even after the start button was let go. After 20 seconds or so the starter finally stopped . I pushed the start again and the same thing happened ... In fact, it kept trying to start the machine even after I turned off the key! (for about 10 seconds). (I also noticed that the positive side of the battery got very hot to the touch.) Any ideas on what's happening? thanks
