2009 Honda recon won't start

Recommended Posts

I have a 2009 recon that I just replaced the piston rings on. It was running and smoking really bad, so I replaced the rings. I put everything back together now it won't start. It's getting fuel, compression, spark, and occasionally a backfire through the carb. If anyone could help, that would be awesome.

Is the timing possible off?

The craziest thing just happened. I just disassembled the top end to see if I did anything wrong, and put it back together. Now it starts first pull. I have no idea what was wrong, or what happened. So confused. But I'm glad it's working now. Ajmboy thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it.

If  you  disassembled and reassembled the top  end , my  guess would be  you   had the timing set  wrong   as Ajmboy suggested..   Possibly  set it  TDC on  exhaust instead of  compression  (180 degrees out) and on reassembly  set it right .  Glad to hear  you got it   working ok.

Yea I can see that now. I was just frustrated, and not looking at what was right in front of me. Thanks for the response

Cool deal! Glad to hear you got it running. I like the video BTW. Is it now not smoking?

It was smoking for a little while due to the oil left over in the exhaust. Now its running smoke free.

I found the problem... the intake valve is bent. The valve spring was rubbing the side of the head, and getting stuck.

So you think it bent because the timing was off of skipped?

I don't think so. After I push the valve back down it will run for a little while, then it gets hung up again. I'll have to take pictures to show you what I'm talking about. The top of the valve stem is bent where the spring is. The person I got it from, must have really abused it. I'm not going to say he screwed me over, but he didn't do me any favors. But what do you expect for $250. I stopped messing with it for now, because I don't want to cause anymore damage. I have ordered parts and they are on the way

recently picked up some project bikes off CL for cheap.  got a honda fourtrax (the ancient 4x4 kind with the straight axle in the front as well as the rear and a back-up kick-start)  plastics are crap, but my goal is to get running like a champ and patch the plastics up and sell to one of my many friends that want a reliable 4x4 for dirt cheap and doesnt care what it looks like.
so the former owner says it needs carb rebuilt, but its sat for 3+ years since so who knows.  things I see:  carb is missing (he gave me a box of parts along with the bike), engine turns over and feels good with kick-start, brakes need work, battery missing (That always puts me off, cause then I know most likely someone's been tampering with the electrical.

My lakota has a new carb and just had a top end redone by a professional, but it will not start. The electric start turns it over great, there seems to be compression. It seems like its trying to start, getting right there and just doesnt catch. It does start occasionally, but wont run for more than a couple of minutes and smells rich. Im assuming the carb needs to be tuned, but im just wondering if anyone else has any ideas before i get a chance to work on it.

      Hi all,

I picked up this quad after the previous owner couldn't get it going.

The issue is that I can't get it to fire at idle or at all.

      I've...

      - replaced plug. Decent blue spark. Also tested with spark tester inline.
      - rebuilt the carb. PO had already bypassed vacuum lines from petcock. There's fuel at the cylinder
      - Checked compression with new gauge. reads 190 psi
      - cleaned all contacts I could access.
      - am currently jumping with car battery. Solenoid jumpered.
      - checked cam timing at TDC and adjusted valve lash
      - put gas directly into cylinder to see if it will fire at least momentarily

Motor turns over well. Plug gets wet.

Motor may fire once or twice but smokes through exhaust a bit as if it's trying to fire or combusting.

This leads me to suspect timing. As mentioned I checked the flywheel mark versus cam marks. Perhaps someone has been in there before because I can't find a 'T' on the flywheel but there is a very visible paint mark which aligns with TDC position on piston. Possibly a slipped flywheel/woodruff?

Is it possible that if it had seen previous repairs, that the timing could still be off? I'm reluctant to dig into the flywheel/stator area if there's something else I could have missed but all signs point me to that area. Would a bad CDI cause spark timing to be off?

Anywhere else to diagnose incorrect spark timing?

I've scoured these forums and elsewhere but I'm posting just in case there's something I've overlooked up until now.

      Thanks very much for reading!

      Hello all,
I have brought an 84 TRX 200 back to life and unfortunately whomever dug into it first removed the two trim pieces that go around the gas tank.  I was thinking someone on the site may have an old parts bike with these pieces lying around.....  If so, drop me a message and we can make a deal.  I just want to complete the bike!
      Thanks,
      Jason

I have a 1988 300 Honda FourTrax, All wheel drive.
My brother and I were fixing up this quad. We put a brand new battery and fuses in and it was running fine until we put the quad into reverse. As soon as it was put into reverse all of the electrical cut out and power wasn't making it to the head unit anymore and both of the brand new fuses popped. We figured there might have been a short from the starter or solenoids, but they are all working properly. At this point we don't know where to start looking for where the short could be. I'm just wondering if anybody has had the same issue or knows of similar issues that could cause these electrical shorts?

Here's a great video that illustrates Honda's 2019 ATV lineup. You've got the TRX90X, TRX250X, FourTrax Recon, FourTrax Rancher, FourTrax Foreman, FourTrax Rincon, and Foreman Rubicon ATVs.

My 2013 Honda 420 occasionally won't go into reverse. I don't think it is in the transmission as it does not make a click or noise. I think it is in the lockout. Someone told me when I ride near the ocean the salt can get on something. Any ideas?

The title is for attention. I’m prepping my cylinder head off of an unknown year 400ex to install on my quad. And I’m examining it and there’s literally a Jewish start( Star of David) protruding from the metal on the camshaft side of the head. It’s not imprinted or etched/ engraved. It’s coming out of the metal. DOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION ON WHY ITS THERE??? I’ve attached a picture
