Possible blown head gasket.

Was given a Yamaha 250 Timberwolf. The guy said he thought the engine was blown. However

after talking with him some more what he described sounded like a blown head gasket.

Description was " It was using a quart of oil per day, then while out riding it began to smoke a lot,

afterwards it lost power and died". I'm a small engine mechanic! and this description fits with blown 

head gasket. Any thoughts on this?

I  can't see a blown head gasket responsible  for  use of a quart of oil  a  day. The price  was right on the quad though   even if the  engine was blown..  You  might  have an easy and relatively  inexpensive fix ,  or  you  may  need  to  find another engine .. Either  way  you  can't  lose   on something  for free.

Tear it  down  and  look.

I have to agree, sounds more like rings or something else going on.

Do you have a way to hook an air compressor up to the cylinder?  Leakdown test is the best way to know for sure.

I agree, doesn't sound like a head gasket..not if its running anyways. I suspect the oil ring but it could be valves...could be..
