A friend of mine has this Bayou 220 that started running bad and parked it a few years ago. I foolishly volunteered to take a look at it. I noticed right away the choke plunger on the carb was broken and probably the reason it was running bad but now the old gas was evaporated and like turpentine. Before i even tried to start it, i drained/ thoroughly washed the tank out, new fuel filter, new fuel lines. Blew air through the petcock etc. Changed the oil and filter and air filter and new choke plunger and cable. I disassembled the carb and rebuilt it with a kit. I cleaned the main jet with solvent and poked a wire through it to make sure it is clean.. the engine now fires right up with the choke on and dies when i take the choke off. I adjusted the air/fuel screw to about 1.5 turns out and the idle screw about 2.5 turns out. The rubber boot between the carb and head does not have any cracks in it so I don't think it is leaking air. I originally had the clip on the needle on the second from the top ring... when i moved it all the way to the bottom it starts, runs and idles really fast and will idle eeally high with the choke off but if i adjust the throttle cable and/or idle screw to a slower idle it will sometimes stall but the idle will go up and down every few seconds and when you give it gas there is a hesitation... i tried moving the clip down to rhe second from bottom and same problem... i replaced all the parts in the pic to the top right. However, there appears to be a small o ring, washer and spring left over from the kit... i did not see these get removed..... a) any idea if where these extra parts go and if i need them and b) any other ideas on why i cant get it to idle right or carb adjustment ideas?

Welcome to Quadcrazy! Nice job on the carburetor. I like to blow all the jets/ports out with air to be sure they are all clear.  The o ring and washer  is most likely for the air fuel screw.

I set my carb at 1-3/4 turns out and it was perfect. But it was also varnished inside and had to go at it three times before it was properly free of junk.

I never went near the main jet/needle clip setting because it was not needed since the bike was running good before it was stored. So go back to where it was.

Then go back and triple check your cleaning of the carburetor and make sure it’s good.

This thing came with a cheap aftermarket carb on it the problem I'm having is it won't start with choke installed into carburetor it will start and get run without it installed then bogs out after about 2 min run time I've checked timing , compression, checked valves for proper clearance , also did a smoke test for air leaks found none.

Hey all, new to the forum! I just bought a 1998 Kawasaki bayou 300, 4x4 not running. Initially I found no spark. Ended up playing with the plug wire (made sure plug top and wiring was touching) and got spark yesterday and the quad fired up off ether. Come to work on it today and now no spark again. Before I got spark and now today if I touch the plug after cranking I get shocked, and it will spark after I release the starter button. I was jumping the quad with a freshly charged car battery that has 12v while cranking. Cleaned out the kill switch and ignition button. All looks good. Purchased new plugs. They're are a lot of wires cut/ disconnected. But shouldn't matter if I got spark without them connected...

I picked up this ATV that had no spark. The previous owner said he was driving it and it died and would not start. He discovered it had no spark. He replaced the CDI and the coil with no luck. He got tired of it and I bought it. I replaced the stater and now it has strong spark. Now, it starts for a second or two then dies. It will not stay running. I have checked the timing and it is spot on. The valves are adjusted correctly. I see no warn issues with the cam. I put the original CDI and coil back on it. Same problem exists. Compression is at 65 psi (has decompression mechanism),
I took off the muffler in case the issue was clogged pipes. No change. I replaced the spark plug. No change. The carb was an aftermarket so I put a Niche carb on with no change. I bypassed the fuel pump and that did nothing to solve the problem.
I don't know if this is a carb issue or an ignition issue. I am looking around locally for an OEM carb to try out but not sure that will fix the problem.
Can anyone help me solve this problem. I am running out of ideas.
      Thank you for your time
      Bill

I’m having a issue with my choke when its on it runs fine when I cut the choke off the atv cuts off went to take the carburetor off and saw the choke plunger broke at the nut to screw it in could this be my issue? Do I just need to buy a plunger kit and put it on? I took the carburetor off and cleaned both jets anyway just to make sure and it’s still having issues staying on
