  1. I have a 1987-89 (not sure on the year) Kawasaki bayou 300 that has electrical issues, I have replaced the entire harness with a proven good/used one, new CDI box, and two brand new coils, problem is that it tests no charge at the pickup coil, so I replaced and tested again with a so called good one that had been salvaged out of a blown up 220/250 (not sure which, the left side cover is smaller than my 300) in Missouri. It has a proven good OEM stator. I am trying to avoid buying a new start and pickup coil because it is so expensive so if anyone has a suggestion please let me know.
  2. So, I've been having issues with my Bayou 220. It's gotten to the point where it was parked for 4 years just because of the issues. Issue 1, Grabby clutch: The clutch is adjusted incorrectly and grabs when shifting from neutral to 1st. It grabs before the engine has a chance to rev, which stalls it. Issue 2, Starter clutch blown out: The starter clutch is busted and spins free both directions. Issue 3, bad shocks: The springs or shocks are bad and the quad leans hard when getting on.
  3. A friend of mine has this Bayou 220 that started running bad and parked it a few years ago. I foolishly volunteered to take a look at it. I noticed right away the choke plunger on the carb was broken and probably the reason it was running bad but now the old gas was evaporated and like turpentine. Before i even tried to start it, i drained/ thoroughly washed the tank out, new fuel filter, new fuel lines. Blew air through the petcock etc. Changed the oil and filter and air filter and new choke plunger and cable. I disassembled the carb and rebuilt it with a kit. I cleaned the main jet with solvent and poked a wire through it to make sure it is clean.. the engine now fires right up with the choke on and dies when i take the choke off. I adjusted the air/fuel screw to about 1.5 turns out and the idle screw about 2.5 turns out. The rubber boot between the carb and head does not have any cracks in it so I don't think it is leaking air. I originally had the clip on the needle on the second from the top ring... when i moved it all the way to the bottom it starts, runs and idles really fast and will idle eeally high with the choke off but if i adjust the throttle cable and/or idle screw to a slower idle it will sometimes stall but the idle will go up and down every few seconds and when you give it gas there is a hesitation... i tried moving the clip down to rhe second from bottom and same problem... i replaced all the parts in the pic to the top right. However, there appears to be a small o ring, washer and spring left over from the kit... i did not see these get removed..... a) any idea if where these extra parts go and if i need them and b) any other ideas on why i cant get it to idle right or carb adjustment ideas? Thanks
  4. OK ya'll.My son bought this thing and was told its a Kaw Bayou 300. Maybe. I cant find any numbers on it.The one tag I did find its so faded as to be unreadable. Its a long shot but maybe someone can help ID it. Thanks in advance.
  5. Hi all, I recently acquired an old Bayou from a neighbor that I cleaned up a got running, then from nowhere a problem crops up where it refuses to start........ I pull the plug and it has no spark, pulled the plug cap off and laid the bare wire on the exhaust header and still nothing......once in a while though when I push the starter button but as I let off the button it might spark once. Now it did begin sparking normally just once and I plugged everything back in and it ran normally again until I turned the engine off. Next time I tried starting it we were back to no spark or the one spark deal. I have tested the stator wires at 140 ohm, the pick up at 130 ohm (I can't seem to find a reliable number for these values online), I bought a new ignition coil and ignition switch on chance those may have been the problem but were not, not sure where to look from here......... does the starter relay switch have anything to do with the ignition on these? I know these older Bayou's are magneto type ignitions and do not need battery power to operate but I wonder if there are safety switches involved I may not be aware of. Also, can someone point me to a good wiring schematic for the magneto 220's? Pre 95 I believe. thanks for any help! -- Ray
  6. Hey I just recently bought a 2002 Kawasaki Bayou 220 when you shift it jumps a lot and while it’s riding it it’s jumping as well but won’t stay started when you let off the gas Could somebody tell me what could possibly be the problem? Thank you
  7. have a 1996 bayou 400 with a starting problem when checking sparkplug grounded to engine -turn key on, hit starter, get one spark then nothing -turn key off and back on hit starter, get one spark then nothing Any ideas
  8. I had to find this photo on the "archives" and was taken before smart phone were even available I believe. This was my first "new" quad I had purchased I think back in 2002 or 2004, not sure.
  9. Need help with teardown of 2001 Bayou 220. New to atv's but not to mechanical work. I was given this ATV and went to turn engine over by pull rope and the engine is locked up. Pulled spark plug no change. Was going to tear down top end. Any suggestions or tricks before I proceed?
  10. I recently bought a used 220 They said needs carb work, ran fine when parked (4 years ago) After looking at it. I have no power at ign. switch or coil, lights etc. Have power at starter relay which I can jump and it cranks but of course no spark. Is there a fuse I am missing? Found one under steering wheel, 2 wires connected to it which aren't there anymore. Battery fully charged just no power anywhere that I can see. Need ideas where to start.
  11. Hello. I'm new so I hope I'm posting in the right place. My neighbor gave me a nice looking Bayou 220, but I can't get any fire to the plug. No lights, nothing. So far I've put in a brand new battery and relay. So those are good for sure. No neutral light comes on when the key is turned. Where should I start to try to figure out this electrical problem? I have a new coil to install, but common sense tells me it has to be something before that. I'm cheap so taking it to the dealer is out of the question. Does anyone know the process of elimination in a situation like this? I'd might add it LOOKS like the wires are all where they belong, but I can't say they are for sure. If the machine wasn't in such great shape, I wouldn't bother, but the grandkids should have a lot of fun on this. Thank you in advance for any help someone can offer.
  12. How do you remove the seat on a Kawasaki Bayou 220?

  16. Hey I have a 97 bayou 300 2x4 (klf300b) that i bought for 1000 last June and sunk another 1000 into it already. When i went to look at it, the seller had warmed it up before hand (he was riding it when I got there). it ran good so i bought it and took it home that evening... next morning it wouldn't hardly start. I discovered the carb was clogged, there was chunks of rust in the fuel valve, the choke lever was missing and other things. I have since cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel valve and gas lines and cleaned out the gas tank and cap. Enough background on it, the problem is this: It floods if i push it past half throttle in 4th and 5th gear even going downhill and shifting correctly. It also has to idle and warm up when you first start it which is really annoying now that its cold... It also smokes blue smoke for about 15 seconds when started cold- does not smoke at all once warm but the exhaust still smells like burnt metal. A friend told me that it didn't have enough compression. I also found out that the valves are a common cause for low compression on Kawasakis.. I have never adjusted valves before- the most I've ever got into a engine was a head gasket on a riding mower so I'm new to this. My goal is to get this bike running and starting cold like a top- should i tear down and rebuild the top end? What should i try first? I tore the carb apart and rebuilt it and fiddled with the air screw and nothing changed. I also ordered a compression test kit that should be coming in soon. Ive also considered just selling it for like $500 and taking the hit- Id rather not sink too much more into this machine.. lol
  17. this bike! did this guy sucker me or what.. ok, looks like this means something is bent that I do not see or one rod is longer vs the other? how long do you think this would last before it ripped into the tire? this is the right side, left side tire clears no problem I can not find them on www.kawasakipartshouse.com
  18. I have a Kawasak i KLF185 Bayou which is in bits - bought as such and never managed to get going. I have not had a spark and tried two OEM CDI's on it. I have replaced the coil and plug and checked the wiring to CDI. I have also tried to use other CDI's (DC ones) run from the battery. Nothing, still no spark, so I have managed to find a new pickup coil and hope that resolves things - any input on this would be appreciated.
  19. Hi everyone, I'm about to get my first ATV, 02 bayou 220. Neighbor said I could have it if I fix it, Carburetor problems, and needs a new ignition switch. last ran 2 years ago, said he changed the oil in it twice a year and never ride it hard. Hope I got me a good ride.
  20. hi all first post just found forum and the manuals / wiring diagram BIG THANK YOU im struggling to find the vin number on my frame? I m told left side of frame , lower, nr. in front of the gear pedal ?? haven't found it yet , is it numbers stamped on the frame or a commission plate ?? main prob. no spark no power to coil , off to study the wiring info I've just found thanks again. tom
  21. Bought this 2 weeks ago.. Starts up fine, seems to run fine. But I am clueless. I tried to pull something small in high gear mode, unknowingly <- n00b There' s a small oil leak from the back/bottom end. maybe 1-2 tablespoons/day after riding it some, otherwise maybe 1tsp/day. I was trying to start it at least every other day (not garaged, gets below freezing) The main issue (aside from full rebuild *see below) is I am seeing smoke from the top of the engine and there is that oil leak in the back. I am hearing something as well, not quite sure what, hope someone else with trained ears can tell me it's just the sweet-uniq'saki If I can get through the winter plowing around, then I can start on my rebuild. Looking to use OEM where possible, aftermarket when makes most sense - I do not care about speed, I like torque .. hauling and crawling. I am also sharing pictures of the oil. And yes, there is some metal in that oil.. which is just magic fairy dust from tinker fairies say my girls, and I can keep beating without issue Metaloil: (image taken with flash:) Here's the smoke: 20190113_105012 Here's engine (left) and back/muffler: 20190113_104854.mp4 TLDR; sad disclaimer: bought this beast from a local seller. this is my first and after having it 2-weeks, riding maybe 1 hour... I got took. I'll tell ya'll how much I paid after we chat about'er for a bit so I do not get crushed. I am not a mech but I have wrenched many'o'things from sparks, water pumps, swapping clutches .. but not bikes or small engines all v6+ just saying I know something, but lots more of nothing! I do like the bayou series and (think?) need 4x4 for the snow and trials here in the Sierras. I want to swap the frame in the spring, as this one is not only bent but has some suspect welding

  24. Evening folks I have a 1988 bayou 220 quad that has a damaged stator and been lying about for a few years. Recently I got the chance of a 1996 bayou 220 that had also been sitting for a few years so I decided I would try and make 1 good bike out of the 2. The 96 frame was rotten so I decided to use my original 88. I swapped the magneto and stator over from the 96 bike but then noticed that the magneto and stator wiring was slightly different so I decided best thing to do would be to change the wiring loom over. Having done this I ran into issues connecting my original run stop switch and push button start. The 96 loon had a connector with 6 wires where as the 88 had a 4 wire connector and a 3 wire connector. I sorted this by making up a conversion harness using the 2 looms but still the push button start would not work. I have now solved this by using some of the spare wires left beside the ignition key connectors and a relay. So now I have the engine turning over with the starter button. But sadly I have no spark. On checking the Cdi unit I have found that I have 6 wires going into the cdi unit but all the wiring diagrams I've seen only show 5 for the 96 model. The extra wire I have is a grey wire which has a loose unattached end beside the ignition switch. Does anyone know where this grey wire needs to be attached. Thank you to anyone who has read this sorry it's so long but wanted to try and give the full story.
  25. Hey people Question for all, just picked a 1986 bayou 300 thinking of going synthetic any thoughts ?
