1989 Big Bear 350

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a 1989 Big Bear 350 for $250 CAD. Bike was running but lost crank and spark. They've installed a new coil, a couple relays, and installed a Ford starter solenoid in place of the original. Now it cranks but has no spark so they sold it to me. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this bike so I can test some wiring. Also any ideas as to direction to head would be nice. Lots of things have been hacked together so I know it probably wont be to easy. The ignition switch was replaced with a toggle switch, I already mentioned the Ford solenoid which 1 of the small wires was not re-installed, and a diode or something was removed from the oil temp sensor wire. I'm sure I will find more so a diagram would be amazing.

Great bike. You should be able to find  a manual in the download section but will only be able to do so by having 10 posts in the forum of contributing or by being a paid member.

Now depending  on how much you want to get involved with this bike you can find parts online via eBay and used parts dealers.    Best to go back to the original solenoid and wore it up properly including the ignition switch all of which are cheap enough to replace.

It locks out the start/cranking. Find the wires at the switch which should be located someplace around the shifter inside the engine and have two wires coming out and unplug them one at a time One of them should be green the other red. Not 100% sure of the color code. But one of them at least should be red.  When they are unplugged you should loose the reverse light. Try to crank it then.

So the stator is confusing me a little. The wiring diagram doesnt exactly match up. I pulled the stator out to check it out and mone only has 1 pickup coil in it. When I look up the stator on RM Stator it shows 2 pickup coils for my stator. I've double checked the VIN and it is an 89, although if I look up a 1990 the stator looks more like mine.

Alright well I was incorrect, it did have 2 pickup coils. Had to send the 1990 back and get one for an 89. Lesson learned lol, next time take a better look. Anyway after installing the stator I still had no spark. Since I have a service manual now I went through all the wiring. Found a lot of issues. Had 2 faulty relays, the wire to the reveree switch was broken, and the PO installed a toggle switch in place of the keyed switch. Well he wired the ground and the ground from the kill switch to the same terminal so the kill switch was always grounded. Installed a new key and switch wired up properly and spark is back. Just have to get all the plastics and tank and everything back on and see if it runs.

I picked up this 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 250 2 weeks ago. A guy that I hunt with parked it at the hunt club for a year or so before I asked him if he wanted to sell. He said " fill my feeder and throw some batteries in my cameras, and you can have it". Sounds like a deal to me!
I have attached some pictures of how it sat under a tarp in the woods and when I got it home and cleaned up a little.

Hello, im looking for some input on this situation i have. My 94 Mojave has no spark, and i have no idea what it is. Ive replaced/tested the magneto, the pickup coil, cdi, the ignition coil. Even the key and Killswitch. I haven't tested the harness its self, but i have tried another harness and still nothing. The only thing i can think of is the fly wheel itself. I have found a lot of metal shavings in the fly wheel and have cleaned it the best I could. But nothing happened afterwards. I am truly stumped here and hoping some of yous could shed some knowledge/ideas that could help get this thing to fire.

Wiring shows White and Brown to solenoid blades. Then a black wire from starter circuit relay to solenoid. I am confused,  where is that black wire supposed to connect?
      Thanks for any help
