Smoking 84 honda trx

Recommended Posts

The smoking could be oil leaking in from the valve seals.   I don’t think that bike is water cooled correct?

What color is the smoke?

Oil burn off is a light blueish color.

Black smoke is a rich fuel condition and could be fixed by adjusting the carb and putting a fresh spark plug in.  Possibly checking that your spark is healthy as well.  Maybe a week ignition coil.

White smoke is when you have coolant leaking into the cylinder head that burns off. This would usually be a leaking head gasket etc. This would also result in a hot running engine condition since you would loose coolant and have a low coolant condition.

If it’s NOT liquid cooled I would check that the exhaust is not leaking at the point where the engine and exhaust pipe connect. There is a metal compression ring that goes in between the engine and exhaust pipe.  That could be bad and leaking exhaust.

Then check that the exhaust is not blocked in anyway.  Take it off and make sure is clear.

Just aquired this Honda 4514. I had heard of them and seen them but had never really looked at one. Amazing machine from the 90s.
It has a 14 HP inline 2 cylinder engine. A cute little fan like the old school cars had and a little radiator. It has a timing belt on the back of the engine running the cam and a water pump. Just like a miniature car engine with  electronic clutches to turn blades on and off. Pretty hight tech for the 90s not a small thing and built like a tank weighs in at 600 pds hydrostatic trans. I have found out that almost anything you have to do to it the engine has to come out starter timing belt water pump. Very expensive parts i think most got junked for that reason, i did find out they were built by John Deere except for the honda engine.
Does anyone here have any expierience with these.

So my moto 4 is smoking white smoke and when I go to first gear and get about half throttle there’s no power and it sounds like it’s bogging

I finally got around to working on the TRX, this has been an ongoing problem with this machine. This is a machine that we keep on my Fathers property, i dont see it that often, my brother haad it professionally repaired last year and year before same problem, the new starter gears and bypass gears last about a year and the machine is not used that often, he said he was done with it , so i thought i should go take a look. Sure enough the gears were all malled again.

IMG_4910.mov   There is some slack in there but most is taken up by the gear cover,if anyone with history with these machines has had the same problem, let me know your findings. Where i am now im looking for finding replacement honda gears on Ebay and try those. I suspect the original was replaced with aftermarket gears years ago and they just worse quality as the years go by.

I'm repairing a 96 Timberwolf 2x4. Many years ago a dog chewed the wires that go from stator to the rectifier/regulator, and I've had to use the pull start ever since. Ive since lost the plug for the stator and on the wiring harness side. I'm ordering a new stator that will also come with the female plug that I need to fix it on the wiring harness side, but I have no clue in what position to put those 3 white wires(ones I'm holding with electrical tape on them) back into the new plug. Since they're all the same color, does it matter? Any info on this or pictures anyone has of their own will be very much appreciated.

So.. it a weird one.. The quad surges as you go down the road. By the looks of my tracks, it's one wheel only. High range, low range, 2 wd , 4 wd.. It just doesn't matter..
You can see in the pictures the marks it leaves. That was in a straight line, with hardly any acceleration.
      Any ideas?
