1999 artic cat 500 speedo

I need a little help. I have destroyed 2 of theses now. Bought the third. I don't know the proper name of the part but when I try to connect to the side of the engine it no longer lines up. What could be causing this? Thanks in advance!

I have not worked on a model that old. It looks like either a speed sensor for the pod (if you have one) or a gear position indicator.

From looking at your second picture, it appears the mount on the right side is broken so when you try to screw in the part it stresses the one side causing it to break off.

(the seat for the part is not level) You could try to shim that side to make it level, or tighten in the left side and for the right screw, put some blue locktite on it and only screw it in until its snug, not tight.

Looks like a chunk of paper gasket left on the right side in the 2nd picture.  If you don't get that cleaned off and the mounting surface flat all the way across you'll break an ear off the new part tightening it up.
