1992 timberwolf 250 2wd will only start if the neutral light is OFF

picked up my third timberwolf 250 for my daughters.  these are great light weight little quads.

have a strange one for you.  the quad will NOT start in neutral.  it will start in first.

if i lift up on the gear selector just enough to hear the little click (its not loud, sounds like a contact clicking, perhaps the neutral safety switch?) the light will go out, but it won't yet be in first either.  that is how i have shown my daughter to start it and she can.

id like to carry out whatever repair is needed.  i have the pdf of the shop manual but it doesn't really have a flow through diagram.

any help appreciated!  thank you.

i need to add something.  it feels like i can switch into another gear BELOW neutral.

so if i switch to neutral, i can keep pushing the gear selector, and it has another click below the neutral.  the light stays on, and when i pull up into first it kind of feels like it has two positions it moves through to arrive at first.

Since I am not familiar with the Timberwolf , I  can  only guess at a possibility from your description. My best guess is the neutral  switch or the mechanism that activates it is either loose or broken so that it is out of position. It may be a simple adjustment and tightening required.  Open  it up and have a look. Starting in gear  is unsafe, especially for a  young rider.

im back with more info.

first, the reason it felt like i could shift below neutral is because the shifter leaver was loose. thats fixed.

but the main issue remains:  here is an update,

1. the reverse indicator switch is broken down on the left side of trans. i dont think that affects the starting circut though. ive ordered the switch.

2. it WILL START if its in neutral, but only i have the neutral switch unplugged. IE, the neutal light is OFF.

so something about the neutral light being ON when im in neutral, stops the quad from starting.

its like there something reversed somewhere.

the quad is ONLY. supposed to start when the neutral  light is on but instead it will only start when its off.

switches are functioning properly.

ive discovered something else. the reverse indicator light bulb is mia. so was the reverse switch. installed rev switch.

had s bulb laying around, blew rev i dicator bulb immediately.  bulb mau be too wussy though

anybody know where i get a replacement bulb?  this is for the little red bulb  the actual bulb

i tested the reverse position indicator light socket/receptacle and its showing 12.4 volts. the little bulbs i put in were rated for 2.4 volts. so i think that explains why they glowed very bright for a second then burnt out.

so does anyone know where i can get a real reverse indicator light?  it would be the same as the neutral light id imagine

Just replying here again.  The reverse light is all good fixed.

The main issue of only starting in gear is not solved.  im not super skilled at reading wiring diragrams nor troubleshooting wiring.  i thought i had it narrowed down to a relay.  ordered the relay but still not fixed.  quad will still ONLY start if the neutral light is off.  It is starting in gear, but wont start in neutral.

is it possible that a wire is reversed somewhere?  seeing as it is doing the opposite of what is supposed to be doing.

If I read the schematic right the neutral  light (19) and the path to  ground for the  starter button relay (11) should only be on when the neutral safety switch ( 20)   is closed.

That would indicate to  me the problem  is  in the mounting of the neutral  safety switch.  For  some reason the switch is open  when in  neutral   and closed when  in  gear.  There is either  linkage  not set right or  is it possible to  mount the switch  turned 180 degrees?

Disconnect the wires from the neutral switch and check  for continuity  in the switch ..  In  gear  it should be open  (  no reading   on the meter) and some  value  close to  0 when  in  neutral.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Hello, im looking for some input on this situation i have. My 94 Mojave has no spark, and i have no idea what it is. Ive replaced/tested the magneto, the pickup coil, cdi, the ignition coil. Even the key and Killswitch. I haven't tested the harness its self, but i have tried another harness and still nothing. The only thing i can think of is the fly wheel itself. I have found a lot of metal shavings in the fly wheel and have cleaned it the best I could. But nothing happened afterwards. I am truly stumped here and hoping some of yous could shed some knowledge/ideas that could help get this thing to fire.

My king quad 700 runs rough when cold then won't start some times but not often when it's hot. And occasionally smoke's a lot when it's cold I'm guessing that's rings but I'm worried unless it's causing the other problems

      All help is appreciated thanks

Has anyone else had an issue on older king quads where the oil would leak from the top of the head (due to a failed gasket) and drip onto the hot exhaust? Mine got so hot one time it caught fire. Just wondering if this is a common issue, as I've seen the same thing happen on multiple bikes that were the same model.

My 2014 750 king quad stalls sometimes when I touch or turn the handlebars, the problem has gotten worse,my machine has 475 miles and is only trail ridden,I have a new factory battery and i have 14.2 volts when the quad is running and 13.3 on the battery when not running, also using a multimeter there is no change in volts when turning the bars until it does stall,If I pull the 40 amp power steering fuse it will not stall.......I've been told its the ECU,Hate to buy one if thats not the problem, but its kinda leaning towards that,,,,,need some opinions.
