Yamaha Big Bear Starter issues.

The 400Big Bear I'm working on, had a couple issues. Starter is spinning backwards.. What would cause this? 

The brushes are in place and I could find no burnt marks inside..

Any Insights would be greatly appreciated.

It may be the brushes have been reversed, changing the polarity. Have you  had them  out and accidentally  switched them ( and their wiring) when  putting them  back? If  the starter was like that when you got the machine , you could try  switching them to see if that fixes  it.. I don't know of any other way  it would reverse.

As said it must be getting reversed voltage. Has the battery been out ? Has the starter been overhauled ?

If it's in the bike still I'd take it out and confirm it straight from a battery in case the battery has been installed backwards. If the battery is in backwards though it will almost certainly have blown the regulator. If the regulator is blown it will probably make sparks when the battery leads are connected.. I think.

Most starters run the same direction whether  they are wired straight or reversed.  There are motors built to be easily reversible  by shifting the position of the brushes on the commutator. Accidental shifting of brushes on a motor not designed for it could still cause it to reverse.

Only parallel fields motors always run the same direction. These are permanent magnet motors as far as I know which will run backwards with reversed voltage.  I also though it would be hard to get the brushes in backwards. Most have a solid power connection bolt coming out the side of the cover. I don't know how that could get misplaced..

I'm interested how it's come to be running backwards. Hopefully it has been apart. If not then the battery's in backwards.

      Looking for some help on a starter/bendix issue. Can Am outlander 450 2017. While cranking to start, the starter spins and engages into the ring gear. After a few seconds the bendix retracts while still spinning and there is no damaged teeth on the drive pulley.

      I have a 1997 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4x4. It used to start right up. Then all of a sudden it wouldn't crank. I have a schematic for it so I started tracing the problem. I had no power at the starter solenoid. According to the schematic the power comes from the neutral switch and through the starter circuit cut out relay. I cannot locate the cut out relay on this machine.. If I apply power to the relay it will crank with the start button.
      The neutral switch is hard to get to with all the brackets on this thing. I did find out from all my research that if I apply the rear brake lever it will start.
      Does anybody know if the cut out relay exists and where it might be found?

      2004 DVX 400 fuel issues

      I rebuilt the carb on said machine. When I hook up the auxiliary gas tank it runs fine and everything is cool. When I put the fuel tank on and hooked up the lines, it completely flooded the cylinder and even about an inch of fuel in the air box. I'm pretty sure that it comes from the little hose on the petcock and hooks to the top of the carb. WTH is that even for? I mean the thing runs fine on the auxiliary tank, so idk And on the petcock when it's in the "on" position, I get no fuel. The petcock from the bike I took it apart and checked out how it operates. The sharpie marks indicate how it really works. Now the other petcock w/o the sharpie marks is an old one that was leaking that I removed from a Polaris quad. It's exactly the same thing, except the small hose and nipple have been removed. I'm so confused, LOL

      2002 Polaris 400 Sportsman Shift Indicator Issues

      I'm working on a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 400 with shift indicator problems. The indicator panel only will show Neutral and Reverse. If it's in High or Low, the indicator will show "R".
      I have replaced the three position indicator switch on the transmission. There is also a two position switch on the tranny that I didn't replace. If anyone is familiar with this problem, please let me know what I need to do. Any help is greatly appreciated!
