Yes it will be complete guesswork. There should be a colour scheme with the new cdi though.

You should use an ohm meter and check what all the different wires coming off the engine read as. The two yellow will be for battery charging I think and their resistance should be low, less than one ohm. The other wires, first check if any have a connection to earth, then test/measure all three between every two possible combinations. It's easiest to put all the measurements into a chart made up of wire colours across the top, and the same colours down the side, then put the ohms into the box where the two colours coincide. If some wires connect to earth then put earth into the charts labels.

If you get those readings then we can make some educated guesses about what each winding is for, and some suggestions about how to test the windings to test them and to confirm the guesses. Then you need a wiring diagram for the new cdi, or we start making guesses about that and trying trial and error..

These are all good points Mech, if the aftermarket one has a wiring diagram that would be great then you can figure it out. If not the manufactuer may supply you one. Just from looking at the wire colors, blk/white usually goes to stop/run switch, brown generally for accessories, but you dont have a red so it might be the power in wire, blue/green pickup coil , black for ground, and that leaves green for the coil, but they are generally orange, but these are all just guesses. I am not that familiar with wire colors on Arctic Cat, and aftermarket CDI wire colors are all over the place, they very rarely match the original harness.Even with a plug you sometimes have to change the pins to a different location to get it to work.

Hey all. Just came across the site, looks pretty cool. Me and my family have always rode atv's and love to get together and ride. Utah has some good riding, but I would like to hear about some other great riding areas. Throw some at me.

Was told it had 2" lift kit on it.Read some where might need to get different boots since lift. Want to do upper & lower. Any suggestions on how to tell if it's lifted & boots I need?

I'm looking for a repair manual that's specifically for a 2016 Arctic Cat 500. I have looked in the downloads section and there's one but it's for 500,700 & 1000 models. When looking through it, things I'm trying to find to fix on my 500 is not specific for just that model, and it's geared more towards the 700 model. So, needless to say, it really isn't helping me. I really hope someone out there has one. Thanks.

Bought the project a few weeks ago with weak and intermittent spark. I could smack the CDI box with a screwdriver and it would work fine for a few days. Now, the smack trick is not working and machine is running awful with the weak spark and will most often not fire enough to turn the engine over through combustion (cranks very good). I ordered the GY6 CDI to see if I can get it going again as these CDI boxes are way too expensive even used. battery is fully charged and charging very good.

Wondering if anyone knows how the GY6 (6-pin AC) CDI would wire to this machine. Attached is the electrical diagram. My confusion is with the green and orange wires sharing the 2-pin connector and the Blk/Red wire that runs to the magneto solo. How would I get AC power to the CDI through pin 1 on the GY6 when the CDI has two wires to the pickup-myabe just try one (orange then green) at a time?

So i bought a chinese carb and in messing around still trying to get it to run right i figured id pull the spark plug to see if it was running rich, well it was definitely but also i have a nasty mark on the strap (i think thats what its called) that looks like the piston has been smacking it. I never actually pulled the plug because i had it running for a second on starter fluid when i first bought it and was just stupid and figured whatever was in there was good. The part number on it is DPR7EA, which is similar to what is called out for in the manual but i assume the little bit off that the code is means it must be a bit longer or something. Unless the plugs are made like this, but i can pretty easily see that metal has been pushed away from the area of impact. What are the odds that my piston is trashed now you think? It does still run just not well due to carb issues but thats a whole other problem.

Actually i just took a second to google both plugs and it says the reach is the same its just different resistor values and gap size, so maybe the bigger gap is why its hitting. Either way the actual one for it is on the way and i hope it just didnt do to much damage. Wish i woulda just went over the whole thing like i normally do with this stuff.
