Hey all, just posting to introduce and get ball rolling on the required number of posts to download a freakin manual. Recently picked up an 86 LT230S for $800, runs OK and kids having some fun on it so far, but it needs some work. I did an oil and filter change, other than a rough idle it's not bad, ordered some new front tires as those are thrashed, and getting left rear looked at as it has a slow leak and was somehow mounted backwards! Not sure how that happens and nobody noticed. Anyway, yeah sure I'll be posting more specific questions as I get into it, hope to just have it solid enough for kids to rip around at grandpas.

Thanks! Anything you'd like to discuss for about 7 more posts? 😆jk, thanks, really

Haha.. Welcome along.

That sounds like a fun bike for them.

Yeah it was pretty entertaining, two 13 yo and one 10, none with any experience whatsoever with the concept of a clutch and having to kick start something 😁. The 10 yo was actually first of them to start it and take off, although he never left 1st, older kids had their moments when they could start it, then just couldn't, had a couple ankle scrapers I remembered so fondly from my time with that same quad and it's funky side-kick. Anyway, yeah it will be fun for them, kept telling them they gotta earn their ride!

Haha.. I'm all for bribery..  Whatever works.

Started my two on a PW 50 two-wheeler when they were 5 and 7. Dug them some mud holes and made some hill climbs, then a hill climb with a mud hole at the bottom..  haha.. Then bigger and bigger hill climbs.

Ya gotta have fun !

Oh I just meant they gotta earn it by beating themselves up to get it started 😁, although they will have to with chores too, will be a nice card to have to play

Yeah, we'll get to learn together, I'm no mechanic, but this quad is pretty simple, will be a good one we can tear apart and feel somewhat confident we can get  it back together. That's the theory anyway!

Yeah i really miss the older ones with the kickstarter, it seems as im getting older i can kick better than i can pull. Its great your getting your kids involved in this project, they will have memories that go with them the rest of their life. Good work!

Just be careful once they learn how to shift..  it'll ( according to Google), top out ( eventually) at just over 50 M.P.H., red lined in 5th gear.

Manuals?  I'm a bit of a newby here too. I bought my way to access, and paid for a membership. It supports the community, and gives you access to much more than just a regular sign up. Try it! Quads are a bit addictive, I'm pretty sure that this is just the first one, of a few that that you'll want the manual for.

Congratulations on becoming a paid member Chuck!

I am also a paid member, and it wasnt for a free manual, that is just a great benefit provided by the Admin, i joined and used the site for a few months and saw how good it was and wanted to help support it. I had been on other sites before i found this one and most times i would not even get a response for a week or so. So i try to respond to everyones question, quickly, just to acknowlege someone is listening, wheather i know the exact correct answer or not, at least try to help them figure it out.

And that, along with your great knowledge and experience, is what makes you such an asset to the site Gw. It's a good/better site for your presence Gw, and I thank you for that.

That's great, I certainly don't mind paying for access to support good people, just so hard to tell nowadays with so much of the web enshittified. It needs front brakes, not working at all right now, but rears are new, so a manual is definitely going to be a necessity. Thanks everyone!

I absolutely mean it Gw. Your contributions are invaluable to the response time and the depth of knowledge in here. Many days it's your input that's keeping the place active, and that does as you say, draw the people in.

I've been using Valvolene 10w 40 ATV oil but, it's like $8.00 a quart. Is that about the going rate? Or is there cheaper alternatives that would be suitable? Thanks

Sorry, bit of newbie question on Honda TRX520
Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to drain the engine oil to just remove the oil filter cover?
I recently carried out an oil change and when checking afterwards, found oil leaking from around the oil filter cover (was torqued to 10Nm). I am going to get new O rings to be on the safe side, but was wondering how high the oil level in the engine sits relative to the pump filter and do I have to drain the oil?
      TIA
      Nigel
