There is a fuel screw on the bottom of the carb in front of the float bowl. This screw controls the idle fuel mixture. I would start by adjusting that. Has the quad been sitting for a long period of time? If so, your problem may be that the carb is gummed up, a good COMPLETE carb cleaning will help in that case.

Here are some possible things that could cause this type of condition:

Pilot screw maladjusted

Pilot jet, or air passage clogged

Air bleed pipe bleed holes clogged

Pilot passage clogged

Air cleaner clogged, poorly sealed, or missing

Fuel level in carburetor float bowl too high or too low

Fuel tank air vent obstructed

Carburetor holder loose

Air cleaner duct loose

But it sounds to me like it's fuel starved. Try what Dirtdemon said and also check your carb float. Yamaha carn floats get mesed up because of corrosion around the pivot pin, causing the float to get stuck in an incorrect or low position.

I 'd check my valve clearance if the carbs are okay and you clean out the pilot circuit and turn the fuel screw out 3 turns after seated then compression spit back throu carbs is stalling it out

also what is your idle set at sse between 1200 and 1500 rpm

Hi guys, I have a 2004 big bear 400. Last winter while plowing the driveway, I heard a loud pop from the left side of the engine. It continued to run as I looked for leaky fluid, but then died shortly after backing it up and won’t start now. The oil light comes on when I try to start it, no noise or anything else.
No blown fuses that I can find.
