My 97 Explorer 400 works fine the majority of the time except for when driving through mud and water. Once I get into some water the engine starts to bog and run no faster than 5-10 km/h in 4x4. As soon as I hit the 4x4 switch and put it in 2 wheel drive it runs fine. It usually takes approx a half hour before the 4x4 will start to allow the quad to work again and it will work fine up until the quad getting wet again. Any thoughts on what's failing or what to look for?

Most likely some kind of electrical connection, check any plugs or wires that may be getting wet. It is really wierd to me that it only runs bad in 4wd, so if there are any circuits dedicated to the 4wd system I would start by checking them.

here are instructions how to change the hub oil

1.Place a drain pan beneath the hub

2.Remove check/fill plug

3.Turn the hub check/fill plug to the 6 o'clock position and drain the fluid

into the drain pan

4.Turn wheel until front hub fill/check plug is either in the 4 or 8 o'clock postion.

5.Add Polaris Demand Drive Hub Fluid (PN 2871654) until fluid trickles out.

NOTE:Do not force the fluid into the hub under pressure or seal damage

may occur.

Anything that only works when the machine is in 4wd could be suspect. I would look for ANY loose connections, plugs, or other connectors, bare or damaged wires. Unfortunately tracking these kinds of problems is sometimes time consuming and frustrating. A multimeter will most likely be helpful.

Might try a spray bottle when things are dry too on your electrical connections you suspect. Might help track things down as to what is getting wet and causing the problem

      Hey everyone,
I’m having an issue with my 2021 Polaris Sportsman 570 – the engine keeps stalling after running for about 10–15 minutes. I’ve checked the air filter, spark plug, and fuel lines, but can’t seem to find the root of the problem. It starts up just fine, but then loses power suddenly.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with this model/year? Would appreciate any advice or troubleshooting tips you’ve tried that worked. Thanks in advance for your help!

I picked up this ATV that had no spark. The previous owner said he was driving it and it died and would not start. He discovered it had no spark. He replaced the CDI and the coil with no luck. He got tired of it and I bought it. I replaced the stater and now it has strong spark. Now, it starts for a second or two then dies. It will not stay running. I have checked the timing and it is spot on. The valves are adjusted correctly. I see no warn issues with the cam. I put the original CDI and coil back on it. Same problem exists. Compression is at 65 psi (has decompression mechanism),
I took off the muffler in case the issue was clogged pipes. No change. I replaced the spark plug. No change. The carb was an aftermarket so I put a Niche carb on with no change. I bypassed the fuel pump and that did nothing to solve the problem.
I don't know if this is a carb issue or an ignition issue. I am looking around locally for an OEM carb to try out but not sure that will fix the problem.
Can anyone help me solve this problem. I am running out of ideas.
      Thank you for your time
      Bill

I know this is a stupid question but here I am.. I'm wanting to have the ability to disable my taillight/brake light on my '96 Polaris Xpress at will, it comes on with the key and there are times I don't want it to illuminate. I have basic wiring knowledge and I'd like to put a toggle switch to disable it. I'm not sure of the wiring setup on this thing, can I just use a toggle switch on the ground wire to kill it when I choose? Can someone clarify which wire I need to work with and the easiest way? Excuse my ignorance yall.

I have Grizzly 700 that has been pretty much totaled out in a bad accident, but it will still run and drive good...
Will this engine swap into any of the Yamaha UTV's like thr rhino and Viking 700's?
Was just going to sell it as is for a engine for someone who needs one pretty cheap..but been thinking about getting a UTV for the family and maybe find one with a blown engine cheap and swap it out
I already an excellent shape 2001 Big Bear 400 4x4 for us..but kinda been looking for a good used UTV for us and the grandkids on our property to play with
Not sure of the year..i can't remember what year it was when i picked it up for a buddy a few years ago..he went to jail after he totaled this thing and told me to pick up a few things at his house he was renting and just keep them for myself since he owed me a bunch of money before the landlord sent them to the dump...
