:aargh: Hello everyone, I am a newbe and just bought my first ATV, it was super fun for the first week. Worked great. Then it would just not start. I pulled the carb and cleaned it out thinking something was blocked and it all looked ok. I changed the spark plug and have spark but it will not fire. I tried to use starter fluid but it still will not start. Any one have any ideas.

Scott,

I see you have answered many questions on this forum and I will really appreciate your help.

I pulled the old spark plug and it was carbon stained black. I looked at the new spark plug and I dont think it ever fired, still looks ok.

Another gentlemen asked me to see what color the spark is, but the new battery went dead, neighbor kid was playing with it and left the key on, (and that is the story I am sticking with, haha).

I am charging the battery right now, I will have more information about that tomorrow night, I work late every night so it will be after 8 cst. Thanks again for responding so quickly.

Sincerely,

Rick

Hello Scott,

I just went out to see what color the spark is and the battery is dead, must be that dam air headed neighbor kid! I blame every thing on him! Keeps the pressure off me, haha.... Anyways I am charging the battery and should have it up to full charge by morning. I will test after work tomorrow night, answer when you can, I really appreciate the help.

Sincerely,

RIck

Hi Scott,

I finally got a look at the spark. The color is a strong orange with very slight burts of blue. Hope that helps. Thanks again for your suggestions.

It starts but doesn't stay running? It doesn't start at all? What exactly is going on?

Spark? You checked this right?

Fuel? Injector or Carb? Do you see fuel squirting?

Air? Remove air filter

Timing? Check coil

Hello and thanks for joining the thread, I do appreciate all the help here. The atv just will not start at all.

I pulled the old one put in a new one and still nothing. I am getting spark but the color of the spark is orange with just a very slight hint of blue.

I did a compression test ended up at 100PSI.

Cleaned the carb out and it is getting gas.

When I spray starter fluid into the carb, I don’t get any firing.

I do not know how to check the timing at this point.

I just got a manual and I will check the coil to see if it is in spec and see what is tells me about checking the timing. Two other gentlemen have indicated that the orange color spark with a little blue is signs that the spark is weak.

Thanks again for joining the thread, I do want to get this resolved with out spending a fortune at the dealership. I feel they know you are at their mercy. Type to you soon.

The spark is a direct product of the coil, I just got the manual and will check this out in the next day or so. It has been raining allot around here lately and I cant even walk to the house with out being carried away by the mosquitoes, I am going to have to spray the yard in order to work on this darn thing, anyways stay tuned and thanks for the quick reply’s.

Thats a bummer :( I ordered a new coil it should be here in a couple days. I think this thing is turning out to be a money pit. It may have to go on the chopping block.

Depending on how you are losing the compression, it might not take that much $ to fix it. Best case, new piston/rings and a fresh bore = $150-$200. If it needs a head job too, you will be looking at a bit more. Here is a link to a site that I found that does work at a very fair rate and they have special packages just for your machine. Check out the link, they got alot of stuff if you want to hop that thing up a bit.

On another note, you need three things to make an engine run, fuel, spark, compression.

From what I heard from a Yamaha parts guy, most yamahas that dont start, its 9/10 times a stator problem.

Coils hardly go bad, you really have to cook a coil in order for it to go bad. Its not your coil, CDIs go bad, but not often. The one thing that does go bad before most other parts, is your stator. I own a 2003 Yamaha Warrior. I had starting issues where I wasnt getting any spark at all! Changed everything but the cdi and stator, nothing helped. Once I changed the stator, it fired right up on the first compressions stroke. If your getting an orange spark, it would leave me to believe your stator was going out. Giving a weak spark, with a low compressions is obvious signs of wear and tear and reason the motor wont start. If you have thoroughly cleaned your carburetor and blown air through all your jets and passage ways and have assembled it all back together, and you are confident you are getting the correct amount of fuel into the combustion chamber, then its a electrical more importantly a stator problem, or a compression issue. But you are still getting like you said 100psi in the compression test, it should be sufficient to sustain a motor idle. I looked all through my manual and cannot find a specification on compression.

I bought a Ricky Stator for my YFM350XR, and it was the best $150 I spent. Plus $10 for the gasket. RickyStator.com

i would really love if someone would tell me whats wrong i brought it to yamaha for 4 days and tehy couldnt find the prob the piston isnt seized or nothing

A stock Warrior is not going to be anywhere close to 250psi. 150 maybe, but 250 not a chance. A 250psi machine won't even think about running on pump gas, You don't see 250 psi unless you have a seriously built full drag race motor. A Yamaha Warrior has a very mild engine. As far as your starter goes, I would guess that either the starter clutch is stuck, the solenoid is faulty, bad connection, or your valves aren't opening for some reason, maybe the cam is flat or something. Valves not opening is also the only way I can even think of how you could be getting a 250psi compression reading.

Hi guys, I have a 2004 big bear 400. Last winter while plowing the driveway, I heard a loud pop from the left side of the engine. It continued to run as I looked for leaky fluid, but then died shortly after backing it up and won’t start now. The oil light comes on when I try to start it, no noise or anything else.
No blown fuses that I can find.
