A thumb over the spark plug hole will tell you if you have "some" or "no" compression.

"no" compression, without any accompanying clanks or clacks makes me think the piston has a neat hole blasted through it (from detonation).

However, it is a Honda. Never heard of them doing that.

Does this engine have the weird gizmo that lifts one of the exhaust valves when you kick it to make it easier to start? If that was stuck open that would explain it.

Seems like if the timing chain had slipped enough to cause this you would be hearing awful noises.

check it for spark. I had a 185 quit and it was the electronic ignition box. The dealers price about gave me a stroke but I found a new one on ebay for $45. It's still running...It's a little guy about the size of a flasher and it's up by the coil.

I would recommend a book to adjust the valves cuz that compression release can be a little tricky.

Nice of y'all to reply, but, I don't think this guy is coming back. He posted this over 3 months ago, and it was his only post. He hasn't even logged in since he joined and posted this thread.

Anybody familiar with this noise from my quad? Just started.  It temporarily goes away when I attempt to shift into another gear but shifting has gotten harder too.

      Thanks

I am unable to find a wiring diagram for this UTV.  When I turn the switch to on, the contractor does not engage.  The Brake pressure switch and the parking brake switches work correctly. What else should I be looking for?  All of the diagrams I have found are for newer models and the wire color coding is different.

      Thanks

Bought a 88 big bear 350 4x4 took it for a run and lost spark, found it was stator so I replaced that then took it for a long run and it sat for 2 days and no spark again, this time stator tests good on ohms and voltage for source and pick up coils so I started replacing things including regulator, ignition, ignition coil and plug cap, spark plug and everything tests great including all safety switches until the orange wire for ignition coil from the cdi it only reads 3 volts so I replaced the cdi and still 3 volts, any ideas??

I have a 2009 Honda Rancher TRX420FA with shifting problems.
Usually it shifts ok when cold but after couple minutes it will stop shifting with no codes.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in first gear is 74psi. The 2nd shift clutch oil pressure when in second gear is 74psi.
The 1st shift clutch oil pressure when in neutral is zero. The problem is when the tranny is in neutral the 2nd shift clutch pressure starts around 10-15psi and builds to 20psi. Is this normal?

Fixing for a friend. Atv was at a different friends house to be fixed and he rebuilt the carb and had it running nice, then it shut off and no more. He replaced the key and the coil.

So he got busy, so I am helping, I checked the wiring from the stator to the cdi, and from the cdi to the coil. All is good. I checked resistance on the pickup coil, good, and on the source coil, open. I buy a new stator (China) and the 4 prong plug only has 3 wires in it while mine has all 4. I checked resistance in the source coil and it's in the 300's. I pulled one of the old pickup wires out of the old stator and wire it in the new one. Still no spark.

Why do the wires differ, I checked the VIN again and it's "J" for the year and I got a 1988 stator. Please help!
