Need help finding the right quad for me!

Recommended Posts

Hey ladies! I've decided it's high time to buy my own quad as I've always wanted to get into it and I finally have the time and money. I don't know any girls who quad on their own, so I'm trying to get some help from the guys I know but it's just not the same. I was wondering if you guys might be able to suggest some good quads to look at for me or give me some tips for buying my very own quad. I'm looking to buy used, not new, as it's more affordable. I've had the Yahama Grizzly 550 recommended, and it sounds perfect for me but is a little higher than my budget. Am thinking the 450 Kodiak but there's no power steering... not sure the difference this will make on a small quad?

Anyways for my needs... I want something that I can take out in the woods to go hunting in the fall, but that I can throw around (not having it throw ME around) and make my bi*** in a mudhole during the spring and summer. A qud that I can keep up to the boys on the trails with that can handle the muskeg, but that I can keep good control of. I have ridden Grizzly 700s before and some similar sized quads before, and they are fun but too big for me to control the way I want to be able to.

So ladies, what do you suggest? What are your tips for me in my search?

I bought a used Yamaha Warrior 350cc last Dec for my 12 yr old son. It was too much for him, so now its mine. I fell in love with it when I rode it the very first time, right then I was addicted! I love love to ride in the mud & woods with it. I feel in control of it-most of the time anyhow. Its not too big and its not too much power to get away from ya. I am 5ft 3", it fits me well. Its not too tall. We have a Suzuki Quadsport 400cc, its more for speed & not the woods & mud (I use it there sometimes!) I like to ride for fun & I love having fun on my Warrior. Good luck!

the 550 is a nice choice, the one i saw was real nice, burgandy and subtle black (old school) flames. check out kijiji for calgary. there are some beauty deals there, and or edmonton. they seem to be in much better shape and less cost than in the fort mac area. and welcome to qc :)

the power steering factor isn't a big deal unless you put a bigger and more aggressive tire on the quad. and maybe make sure you don't get something in 4 wheel all the time, 2 to 4 select is really nice. just saying cause i have a 660 and 350. both are about the same armstrong steering...

I just switched from a polaris 500 to a polaris 550 - Touring. what a difference. I can keep up with the boys and also feel safe while i am at it. The longer wheel base makes all the difference. Also have power steering for the first time. I would never buy another quad without it....

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

My king quad 700 runs rough when cold then won't start some times but not often when it's hot. And occasionally smoke's a lot when it's cold I'm guessing that's rings but I'm worried unless it's causing the other problems

      All help is appreciated thanks

Has anyone else had an issue on older king quads where the oil would leak from the top of the head (due to a failed gasket) and drip onto the hot exhaust? Mine got so hot one time it caught fire. Just wondering if this is a common issue, as I've seen the same thing happen on multiple bikes that were the same model.

My 2014 750 king quad stalls sometimes when I touch or turn the handlebars, the problem has gotten worse,my machine has 475 miles and is only trail ridden,I have a new factory battery and i have 14.2 volts when the quad is running and 13.3 on the battery when not running, also using a multimeter there is no change in volts when turning the bars until it does stall,If I pull the 40 amp power steering fuse it will not stall.......I've been told its the ECU,Hate to buy one if thats not the problem, but its kinda leaning towards that,,,,,need some opinions.
