do you have power to the coil from the cdi box. if you do not get some kind of crank signal from the cdi box then your coil will not spark. remove the plug wire and try to starting it. see if the coil arcs to itself. most will. if it does then put a new plug and wire on it.

What year is your Grizzly?

If you are still having trouble try these things as well. Pull the plug boot off of the coil wire, make sure there is good clean wire at the end, if not, then clip a little bit of insulation off, about 1/8th inch at a time until you find good fresh wire. Next, check the pulsar coil, take a multimeter, set it to ohms, and test across the leads, you should get a reading somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 ohms. Also, is this coil you are using off of the same type of quad, or is it off of a different kind of machine?

i have a 600 grizzley and it will not fire but i have fire to the cdi box and a new coil off another 4 wheeler that works but i can not get fire to the spark plug and all the fuses are good. can someone give me some advice? thanks

Just curious, how did you determine the fire at the cdi? Or did you mean you have an ac voltage at the input of the cdi? If you have high ac volts at the input to the coil (output of the cdi) and no fire, I would suspect the coil wire or the spark plug.

Also check to see if you have a pulse voltage on the cdi. THis should be a small ac voltage.

This voltage tells the cdi to output to the coil for a spark at the plug.

Hard to tell, I am not sure what questions you were answering there, or what you mean by "I did it and it done the same thing", or "same one that is running", what are those posts responses to? You can click the qute button at the bottom left and quote a post in your response so that we can tell which post you are answering.

What you really need to do is test everything you can, spend the money, get a manual and a digital multimeter, and test the ignintion components. You can do pretty conclusive tests on everything but the CDI. There are tests for the CDI, they can tell you if it is bad, but not necessarily confirm that it is good.

dirt demon what i was saying is that i put a coil on my 4 wheeler off 1 that was running but mine still would not start. i had trouble getting it started b4 i unloaded it but i had a spark when i pulled the wire off. when i came back to it from hunting it did not want to start with the electric but it did with the rope so i rode for a while and had no trouble after turning it on and off and it started with the electric, and when i was going back to load up it died and that was it so i went and loaded it on the trailer and took it home. when i got home fire was going trough the batt and cylonoids to the plug on the cdi box on 1 post and also i had fire on a post on the box with fins in front of the cdi box but i could not get any voltage at the coil. thanks for your time i am new at this site so bear with me please.

if you have power to everything and spark off the coil then you don't have anything i would do some deep searching and testing on your power and groun d circuit. it sounds to me like you have a loose power or ground. also your solenoid could be failing as well. i have seen them put alot of draw on the power circuit that it leaves nothing for spark etc.

first thing is to get an electrical wiring diagram. This will show you the layout. Then check the simple, eaiser, faster things like switches and grounds. If you have a ground, NO FIRE, if you have a bad switch,NO FIRE, then check the exciter coil, pulsar coil and finally the output of the CDI if all the above checks ok. I am assuming you have tried another spark plug with the cap on and it held against the block while spinning the engine over looking for a spark, then the CDI must be the culprit but it is the last thing I would suspect cause it is the most expensive.

We are always glad to help, so it isn't any trouble. You have gotten a few suggestions since your last post, so let us know if any of the advise has been helpful. I am getting the feeling that you may have some kind of stator problem, could be a loose connection, or a bad part. The easiest way to find out is to use a digital multimeter and test all of the ignition components and circuits. There are direct resistance tests for most of the ignition parts, a service manual would also be a good idea, there will be directions and specs for these tests listed in the manual. Check ebay, you can get an aftermarket manual for around $30 or you can get a factory manual for around $80, either one would be well worth the money.

dirtdemon thats what i was thinking but mine will not turnover with the kill switch off. Any suggestions?

if the main switch is off it wont roll over. The main switch gives power to the start button which when pressed sends power to the start relay which sends power to the starter. If the kill switch is off then the cdi is turned off.

Kill switch on, main on, hit starter, motor turns, turnning stater side flywheel, this causes the exciter coil to send a 60 to a 100 volts ac to the cdi and the pulsar coil which is in there too sends a 3 to 6 volts ac to the cdi telling it to send a high voltage to the coil which steps this voltage up to 10 to 30,000 volts to the spark plug where it jumps across the electrode and ignites the gas and air mixture. Vaaarrroooom!! If all is working properly. A malfunction in any part of this system and no fire!

Hope this helps

Either someone messed with the wiring, or your machine is just not wired like that. For all I know your Grizzly could have been wired so that both switches need to be on for the machine to have power at the starter. I am only speaking from experience I have had with other machines, a 1999 Grizzly not being one of them. My best guess tells me that something is wrong, but I am not 100% sure of that. The best way to tell how things are supposed to be wired on your machine is to get ahold of a wiring schematic. The best way to get ahold of a wiring schematic and alot of the other info you need is to get a repair manual. You could inspect the wiring and switches for any signs of damage or poor repair. Make sure that current is flowing through both the key and kill switches.

pretty much every machine i have worked on or owned will not crank over with the kill switch on. the cdi box controls everything. the kill switch usually cuts the power completely to the box which in turn cuts the power to the starter. i agree with DD about the manual though. get the manufacturer one. it will tell you everything you need to know.

My LT-R has power to the starter, fuel pump, fan and lights as soon as you turn the key on, even if the kill switch is off. I can turn the starter without the kill switch on but, obviously, it won't start. My friends TRX 450R will do the same thing, we noticed this when he almost ran his battery dead trying to get it to start, turns out, his kill switch was off. As soon as he turned it on, it fired up. The CDI box has nothing to do with the starter itself, it is wired only to the stator, coil, pulsar coil and where applicable, the battery. I guess this means we can conclude that some machines have an active starter even with the kill switch off and some do not.

I also have a Grizzly 600 yr 2000 with the same problem. Did you find the problem? If so can you tell me how you fixed it?

hendersoncm I have not really had a chance to work on it but if you figure yours out before i do if you don't mind let me know what you your problem was. thanks

i have a four wheeler cdi box with 5 pins coming out the plug in has 6 pins that plugs into the cdi box but the red hot one dont plug into anything hod do the cdi box get it power if the red wire dont connect to anything i have no spark

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark.

What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual.
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.
As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

Hi, I have been around everything with a motor since I was little, and finally purchased more to get my husband, and kids involved. I have 4 quads I will be searching around for information on. I have two 2002 Suzuki LT80K quads, a 1997 Yamaha Timberwolf 250, and a 1996 Kawasaki Bayou 220. I have had different ones throughout the years, and plan on buying another Yamaha Banshee. I plan on trying to learn more about all of them, so I can customize some of them. I know nothing about them besides how to race them, my dad always took care of the rest, but figured it was time for me to learn.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.
