1. Take the timing chain tensioner out.

2. Pull the cam cover off.

3. Remove the bolt from the cam and the cam gear

4. Remove the bolt that holds the side case and flywheel to the crank.

5. Pull the stator side case. Watch the little alignment tubes. Remember how the bolts came out, some are longer than others.

6. Pull the flywheel. Flywheel puller.

7. Take the chain off the timing gear on the crank, put on the new one. The easiest way to get it up to the top end is to drop a piece of wire down through the head and tie it on. Once you get the chain pulled up, tie to the frame to keep the chain from dropping back through.

8. Put the flywheel back on.

9. Put the side case back on,the magnet from the flywheel will grab the coil on the side case and the flywheel will jump out as you almost have the side case on,If everything is aligned properly to start with this won't be a problem and everything should slide back together.

10. Put the crank bolt back in and torque it. {Shop Manual for settings} 43ft\lbs??

11. Turn the flywheel over to get the timing mark in the window and reinstall the cam gear.

12. Check your timing marks.

13. Reinstall the cam bolt Torque it. {Shop Manual for settings} 43ft\lbs??

14. Reinstall the cam chain tensioner.

15. Check timing again, always wanna be certain!!

16. Put the cam cover back on.

17. Cross fingers

18. Start machine.....

Yeah, I got it. I was thinking of my old 750 4 banger where the chain dropped into the center of the case and turned 2 overhead cams. This is simple, except none of the stores here in town are open, plus I'll prolly have to order parts and wait,wait... Thanks Man !

I'm in the middle of repairing damage from the chain coming off of this from the previous owner. (I learned this is somewhat common on these for various reasons.)
What are you guys using to either help keep the chain correct and on the sprocket or guarding your engine in the case that it comes off / breaks?
Is there an upgraded guard that can bolt around the sprocket in replacement of the currently broken OEM alluminum?

Just some friendly advice on new tires. Check with your ATV dealer.
There are so many aftermarket sites, Revco, Royal Distributing, Partzilla, and on and on. Even with their “ big sales”, my local Canam dealer’s REGULAR price beat the tire prices of the 3rd party sellers! People often assume the Dealership will cost them more, but I found this not to be true!

Which is more reliable? Shaft or chain drive?

I have replaced the cracked stator cover on my non-running 2006 LT-F400F that I purchased recently, checked all the shafts vs the service manual and pics and advice here.  I replaced missing gears, bushings and washers, made sure that truth marks were all aligned properly, that the shift cam springs felt like they returned properly, etc.  IAfter installing the new stator cover I checked the transfer lever for proper movement from L-H-R and then cranked it up.  Happily, it runs and changes gears well in L,  but it will not shift into H or R for anything.  I have opened it back up and am going back through it looking for the missing puzzle piece(s) but how can I best check that I have everything right this time before buttoning it back up?
