I HAVE A 97 POLARIS 500 4X4 EXPLORER. I JUST BOUGHT IT TODAY. THE BIKE WOULD GO INTO GEAR WHILE I LOADED IT UP. IT ROCKED AND WOBELED BAD WHEN I DROVE IT AT HOME AND MADE A CLACKING NOISE. NOW IT WILL NOT EVEN GO INTO GREAR. I MANAGED TO GET IT IN TO DRIVE BUT HAD TO GIVE IT QUITE A BIT OF GAS TO MAKE IT GO. IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF GEAR. THE MAN I PURCHASED IT FROM JUST REPLACED THE REAR CV SHAFT ON THE LEFT SIDE BECAUSE HE SAID HE "SHATTERED IT" . THE FLUID IN THE CASE LOOKED NEW AND WAS FULL. OH YEA, WHEN I STARTED IT UP IT ALSO MADE A FUNNY WINING NOISE. ANY SUGESTIONS ON WHAT MY NEXT MOVE SHOULD BE.

Well the motor runs like a champ. fires right up. Even with the motor running great would there still be an issue with the shavings in the motor or should i lean more towards the pullies and belts? Its just crazy, when I drove it at a about 10mph it started rocking like i had a bent rim while making a clacking noise in the rear end.

Check the cvt first. Should be a cover on the side. If ok then jack up the atv and spin the rear tires and see if u can duplicate the noise.

If there is shavings in the oil then yes the motor is slowly destroying itself. I am not sure if your atv is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke If it is a 2 stroke then there isnt a sump for the oil and therefore you wouldnt be able to check the oil.

Did you figure it out? in addition to Mario and Ajmboy, I have some suggestions... Find out WHERE the noise is coming from: pvt, tranny, engine...You did'nt say where the wobbling was from: front or back? I'm assuming back since the cv was replaced. Had a friend who's sportsman did the same thing it was a combo of low tranny oil and bad rear differential. Also check the inner and outer seals of the driveaxle it will make clicking sounds when turning..if all else suggested fails. Note on the pvt: pisses the machine off when anything gets past the outer cover ie: water, dust, dirt oil, etc so check the seal, learned that myself the hard way powerwashing the mud off.......bike would not move and howled mad.....hope you get it fixed soon:wink:

yea, come to find out the driven clutch as*. can apart as soon as I took the cover off. The nit witt who changed the drive belt cross threaded the part that screws on the shaft thingy. it was wobbling so much it ripped the threads up. this was why the bike was shaking so bad. This was a good learning exp. for me and a good teaching tool for some one else. Thanks for the advise...

I finally got around to working on the TRX, this has been an ongoing problem with this machine. This is a machine that we keep on my Fathers property, i dont see it that often, my brother haad it professionally repaired last year and year before same problem, the new starter gears and bypass gears last about a year and the machine is not used that often, he said he was done with it , so i thought i should go take a look. Sure enough the gears were all malled again.

IMG_4910.mov   There is some slack in there but most is taken up by the gear cover,if anyone with history with these machines has had the same problem, let me know your findings. Where i am now im looking for finding replacement honda gears on Ebay and try those. I suspect the original was replaced with aftermarket gears years ago and they just worse quality as the years go by.

I picked up a 2000 Big Bear 400 4X4 that was sitting around that I know nothing about. It will not start. I do have a red light when in reverse. When I take it out of reverse, I do not get a green neutral light, and when I push the start button the red oil light comes on but there are no noises, nothing else happens. How do I test the neutral switch and/or bypass it to see if I can get it to at least crank? And does anyone have other suggestions for me to try?

So.. it a weird one.. The quad surges as you go down the road. By the looks of my tracks, it's one wheel only. High range, low range, 2 wd , 4 wd.. It just doesn't matter..
You can see in the pictures the marks it leaves. That was in a straight line, with hardly any acceleration.
      Any ideas?

Was told it had 2" lift kit on it.Read some where might need to get different boots since lift. Want to do upper & lower. Any suggestions on how to tell if it's lifted & boots I need?

I'm looking for a repair manual that's specifically for a 2016 Arctic Cat 500. I have looked in the downloads section and there's one but it's for 500,700 & 1000 models. When looking through it, things I'm trying to find to fix on my 500 is not specific for just that model, and it's geared more towards the 700 model. So, needless to say, it really isn't helping me. I really hope someone out there has one. Thanks.
