Yamaha Kodiak 400

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

New peep here and I have come to ask a question. I currently own a Honda Fourtrax and have come across a Yamaha Kodiak 400. It has all time 4wd. Not sure of the year but think it is in the mid-90's. The quad is in very very good shape except for one little thing. the motor is blown. The guy wants $500.00 bucks for it. Is it worth it? I can rebuild it no problem but feel that $500.00 might be a bit much for a quad with a blown motor. What does everyone else think?

Hi guys,

He was not in the shop today so couldnt get more info. A friend of ours mentioned he thinks the cam chain broke. If thats the case, I am probably looking at atleast 1 new valve. probably a piston(piece of mind) and hopefully the rod wont be bent. When he gets back into town, I will have to get the run down on it. Thank you for the responses!

I been working on this thing for like 2 months now and it will not run right, is very smokey, and has a pretty loud tap that i think is in the bottom end. Not sure how much the parts are but i will put the time into it if they are pretty cheap. Im not very experienced but going off how the plug looks and the oil on top of the piston i am getting a whole lot of oil coming in from somewhere, not sure if it can come from the valves or if the rings are just shot, my cheap scope cant really see the walls of the cylinder too well.

Just aquired this Honda 4514. I had heard of them and seen them but had never really looked at one. Amazing machine from the 90s.
It has a 14 HP inline 2 cylinder engine. A cute little fan like the old school cars had and a little radiator. It has a timing belt on the back of the engine running the cam and a water pump. Just like a miniature car engine with  electronic clutches to turn blades on and off. Pretty hight tech for the 90s not a small thing and built like a tank weighs in at 600 pds hydrostatic trans. I have found out that almost anything you have to do to it the engine has to come out starter timing belt water pump. Very expensive parts i think most got junked for that reason, i did find out they were built by John Deere except for the honda engine.
Does anyone here have any expierience with these.

I picked up a 2000 Big Bear 400 4X4 that was sitting around that I know nothing about. It will not start. I do have a red light when in reverse. When I take it out of reverse, I do not get a green neutral light, and when I push the start button the red oil light comes on but there are no noises, nothing else happens. How do I test the neutral switch and/or bypass it to see if I can get it to at least crank? And does anyone have other suggestions for me to try?

So my moto 4 is smoking white smoke and when I go to first gear and get about half throttle there’s no power and it sounds like it’s bogging
