I loss compression on 1994 kawasaki bayou 300 4x4. It had good compression but had a rough idle it would go up and then down very unstable but when I put it in gear it ran fine. I ran it gor about 20 minutes and parked it. The next day when I go to start it up I notice that there is no compression and it wilol not start. I checked the compression with a gauge and it does not read anything. I put a little oil in the cylinder through the plug hole then ran another compression test and it still does not read anything. Do you think the valves could be the problem? Any sugesstions. This is a unit that has been sat up for a couple of years. I have a new plug in it and installed a new honda carberator from winn cycles from ebay, did this to try and get it to idle which did not help any.

Any advice is helpful.

thanks

Not familiar with the motor but sounds like valves, cam or timing chain. Also when you did the compression test did you hold open the throttle all the way? can you access the valves like when you have to adjust them? If you can watch them see if the cam is turning or all valves are opening. I can see my cam when I adjust my valves on my Honda EX.

Speaking from inexperience but why did you put a Honda carb on it?

That's odd that there is no compression at all and you just ran it. I would have to guess that there maybe something with the valves being open or piston ring damage? Did it make any noise before it dies out?

This thing came with a cheap aftermarket carb on it the problem I'm having is it won't start with choke installed into carburetor it will start and get run without it installed then bogs out after about 2 min run time I've checked timing , compression, checked valves for proper clearance , also did a smoke test for air leaks found none.

Hey all, new to the forum! I just bought a 1998 Kawasaki bayou 300, 4x4 not running. Initially I found no spark. Ended up playing with the plug wire (made sure plug top and wiring was touching) and got spark yesterday and the quad fired up off ether. Come to work on it today and now no spark again. Before I got spark and now today if I touch the plug after cranking I get shocked, and it will spark after I release the starter button. I was jumping the quad with a freshly charged car battery that has 12v while cranking. Cleaned out the kill switch and ignition button. All looks good. Purchased new plugs. They're are a lot of wires cut/ disconnected. But shouldn't matter if I got spark without them connected...

HI everyone. New to this forum. I have 98 Kawasaki Bayou 400 with an apparent electrical issue. I have the Clymer manual, but I am not exactly sure where to start. The issue started a month ago and the neutral light would go on and off intermittently. Eventually it went completely off , and I thought it was a shifting issue. I took the case off and checked the clutch and all mechanical shifting components are good, so I think I eliminated that. The switch sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Last time I tried, I did hear a clicking sound near where the battery is right before the light went out. Does anyone have any ideas where to start? Hoping this is an easy fix.

I've got a 1995 220 Bayou and the electric start does not work.  When I got it the machine was pretty rough but I was told it ran less than a year ago.  The key switch had been cut off and wires  twisted after the key was lost.  I bought a new ignition switch and repaired the wiring and it is working correctly.  It is in neutral and the neutral light is on when the key is turned on but I get nothing when pressing the start button.  I verified there is no voltage going to the starter from the solenoid.  The fuse in the solenoid is good.  Something I found that is odd is that I get positive voltage(12 volts) to the brown, black, and white wires that run into the solenoid when the key is on.  That doesn't make sense to me but I could be wrong.  I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you in advance.
