been acting up for a couple weeks.running fine then dies,no spark at plug.wait few minutes start up again runs for maybe hours.also sometimes it will run great then it starts losing rpm.will not wind up to higher rpms then it will pickup and go for awhile.well now there is no spark any time ,nothing....:aargh:

Two more places you should look. First check the trigger coil resistance and if its up to snuff. Try checking the key ignition. There is a continuity check you can do for that also. Otherwise, you can run a jump wire on the wiring harness side to elimininate the key. once it is jumped out and you get a constant spark then you have your problem. Use a small wire to jump with until the neutral light comes on then the bike should fire up. If this is too complicated then dont take any chances on it unless you know what your doing.

you talking about pickup coil? regular ohm meter ok? key ignition replaced with toggle switch and green neutral lite has always come on when switch is closed.will a regular ohm meter work to check cdi if needed/ I have older needle type and digital type. think stator would act up like this or cdi? thanks for any help.

Some people call it a trigger coil or a pickup coil. The best meter to use would definitely be a digital meter. However, the reading that youll get may differ some because you may not have the same type of meter that Kawasaki may have used.

As it seems like you have the ignition key already bypassed, then that illiminates the ignition set. Therefore the only other issues has to be the stator itself. Youll need the reading given out of a shop manual in order to test the CDI, I have been around kawasakis for years and I don't ever remember replacing a single CDI. Im not saying it may not be your problem but be sure before you replace it. They are not cheap.

If the ignition coil specs and the pickup coil specs measure up then its either a bad ground or a broken wire somewhere. That's what I would check before replacing the CDI. If your getting spark sometimes and then not id bet money on a corroded ground wire or a loose wire.

you could just run a fresh ground wire and see if it helps being intermedant your meter might read fine if and new ground and bypassed ignition switch doesn't help then replace the cdi

Check your DC voltage at the battery when the unit is running. At idle it may be a little high in the 14s, but should settle down to 14 DC volts when revved up. If over 15 volts then replace reg/rec. If not that, then check all your connectors in the wire harness, you may have some corroded connectors. Just a shot.

I checked everything you could check and everything checked out so I replaced my CDI and still nothing. After a week of going over the atv I looked at the plugins on the old and new CDI. They were exactly the same except the pin placement in the connector from the pickup coil was slightly different so the connectors fit together perfectly but the pins were not making contact. I hooked up jumpers from connector to connector and had spark.  Swopped out connector ends and bike runs perfect. MAKE SURE YOUR PICKUP COIL CONNECTORS MATE UP!

      1989 Moto 4 YFM350ERW intermittent spark.
      Quad has set for about 7 years and was running when parked.  When I replaced the battery and attempted to start it had no spark. 
       
      What I have done.  Followed troubleshooting in the manual. 
      1.       Coil failed the resistance check so I replaced it.  Still no spark.
      2.       I performed resistance checks on the stator and they all pass.
      3.       Found a bad rear brake stop switch and unplugged it and connected the wires in order to disable.  Now I have intermittent spark.  I believe that the issue is with either the stator or CDI and not sure which.
      1989 seems to be a transition year for electrical.  I can get new aftermarket CDI units for 87-88 and 90-94.  I cannot get ones for a 89.  I can get new stators for 87-89 and 90-95.  Looking at the schematics the wiring on my moto is closer to the 90 ones on the ATV side of the CDI and closer to the 87-88 on the stator side of the CDI.  Looking at part supply sources the stator housing is the same part # for all the years and looking at some of the stators on Amazon that have the dimensions on them both of the stators are the same size.
      What I am thinking of doing is to replace the stator and CDI with a 90-95 one as these parts are all readily available.   Does anyone know if this has been tried before and if there are any issues with doing this.  
       As a side note I also have a 1993 Moto 4 YFM350ER that has been sitting longer but it is located about 400 miles from me at this time.  By doing this change in addition to being able to get parts I will also have 2 ATV’s that are the same electrically.

      Troubleshooting a no spark issue, was running OK, maybe a little rich, turned it off, now no spark. I've checked/ohmed out the main key switch, the start/stop switch, neutral switch, brake switch - all good. It will crank the starter, but no spark with the starter or when I try the pull start. I've checked all fuses and diodes. Swapped battery. New plug. New coil. Swapped in a used CDI - no help. Traced, removed, cleaned, reattached all grounds. Removed things like my winch from the circuits to be sure a bad relay or something was dragging it down. When testing voltages, the orange wire going from the CDI to the ignition coil shows no/very low voltage-shouldn't it have 12V on it? Sometimes I get a very weak, intermittent glow on my spark tester, but not enough to fire the plug. I've checked continuity on just about all wires in the harness. Checked/cleaned/lubed w dielectric grease- all connections, redid a few that looked old/dirty. I've checked the stator resistances, all good, but have a stator and rectifier ordered anyway, will arrive Sunday. I verified that the rectifier has a voltage output back to charge the battery while cranking - 10.5-11V, low, but expected while starter is engaged. What else can I check as part of troubleshooting? I have a Haines service manual, but the 1999 350 4x4 seems to be an odd model, there isn't an exact electrical diagram for it, but found one for another year that has all the same number of wires and same color wires, so I've referenced that. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

      any one know much about how this system works. Replaced voltage regulator cid box coil pickup coil have power to cid box none out to coil any thoughts. This is cid box number three

      i just picked this up. was told ran fine but overheating issues led to replacing head gasket and head. has not ran since. he is not a mechanic but helped someone else who he could not get back to finish job, got aggravated and put up for sale. i was thinking timing issues. i have 110-120psi on all 3 cylinders so i think valves are correct. dont know about distributor yet. however i have no spark. i have no power going to ignition coil. tried to follow white wire but gets lost in wire harness. does anyone have a wiring diagram? can anyone tell me what conditions have to be met before starting. motor turns over so i would think all safeties are met but you never know.
