2003 Arctic Cat 500 Auto - Clattering Noise

Hello, my 500 makes this clattering noise when started and when it warms up (15 min riding or going up a hill) it dies and you can't get it started until it cools off. Usually let it sit for 15 min and it will start back up again. I have torn it apart expecting to see a bad piston/rings/wrist pin etc. but nothing is bad. I did not check the valve clearance before tearing it apart figured that valve clearance wouldn't keep it from starting once warm. Anyway, have taken off both side covers and the clutches. Nothing seems to be worn or obvious. Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for? Would a bad waterpump cause this?

the dieing and cooling off is usually the tell-tale sign of a bad coil ... i think you can test them before replacing ...

OK, update on the 500. Found the wet clutch Nut to be less than finger tight. I believe that is where the clattering noise is coming from. So on to the problem of it dying. It doesn't just die it slowly gets weak and if you let off the throttle then it dies and won't start. Does anyone think a plugged oil pump screen would cause this? So you think I should test the coil? I will try that and see what it says. Thanks in advance for any help.

Just an update, waiting for the wet clutch and shaft to get here. They have been on backorder. I did some more checking and one of the piston rings was wore in an oval patern. Mic'd the cylinder and it was all good. So put a new set of rings in. Now just waiting for the rest of the parts to get in so it can go back together. The coil tested good so I am hoping that the piston ring may have had something to do with it failing after getting hot????
