Hey fellas, new member here and wanted to get some expert advice. I'm not new to quads, just been or of the game for a while. I was big into them growing up. My last bike was a 1999 Banshee that I sold when I went to college. Now I'm almost 30 (can't believe I just said that) and I've really been thinking about getting another bike again. I am just clueless on the bikes after 2000ish.
Currently, I have a 1984 Honda Big Red 3-wheeler in like new condition that my grandpa bought brand new. While it's really neat to putz around on and show off, there is really not much enjoying about riding it.
What I'm looking for is a sporty quad. Nothing for racing or anything like that. I would LOVE to get another Banshee. I love the 2 stroke sound and the sheer quickness. But now that I'm older, I'd really like something with reverse and I don't want to smell like exhaust after riding. So I'm thinking 4 stroke would be better suited for me.
I want something with some power and speed though. I'm not exactly a small guy either. I'm 6'1" and 230lbs. I need something that can handle my size and still have some pep.
Riding style would almost exclusively be gravel roads and occasional trail. No racing or duning or anything like that.
I'm thinking I'll be keeping an eye out for something used and probably completely stock. I don't want something tricked out because I'm not much of a gearhead. Reliable and smooth running is key. I'm thinking a max budget of $2500-$2800. In my initial search, I have found some nice offerings like Honda 450R and 400EX, Suzuki LTZ400, and some Raptor 660s and KFX700s. I know very little about these bikes or if they will even fit my search criteria. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm literally all ears and want to soak up all the knowledge I can.
Little background on my ATV history...I'm 39, been riding since I was little kid, first ATV was a Honda ATC 70 3 wheeler back in the day "late 70's, early 80's, cant remember"...Had a pile of dirt bikes over the years, then got into quads when they first came out...Raced MX for years in my late teens & early 20's...Yamaha Banshee in open 2 stroke, and Honda 300ex when it first came out "and was the hottest 4 stroke going"...Got out of riding after that and haven't owned a quad since then "mid to late 90's"...Looking to get back into trail riding and maybe race some XC once I get back into riding shape again.
We "me, wife & kids" are getting ready to buy a Polaris Ranger Crew Cab so we have room to put around with the kids and I hunt a lot and will use it for that...But I want something fast to ride again, I'm not a utility quad kinda guy when it comes to trail riding, they are to slow and heavy for my taste...So now I'm looking for a good used race/sport quad, really want to stay with a 450...
So between the YFZ 450, TRX 450, LTR 450 & KFX 450 which one should I really consider??? I was always a Yamaha and then Honda guy. Looking for something in the 2006-2009 model range. I've been hitting the local shops up here in South Dakota "just moved here" and have found a few but not a lot, not much in the way of sport/race bikes in this area...Been looking a lot online but not finding a ton in the immediate area.
I'm just not up to date on the modern 4 stroke race bikes, I was always a 2 stroke guy back in the day and knew all about the Banshee, 250r & Quadracers back then but those are all ancient history now days.
well i had an unexspected thing pop up with enrolling my son into school he will be starting Pre-K the end of summer and with us having 1 vehicle and the school saying he cant ride the bus with his sister it brought up an issue that needed to be adressed not to mention he will only be going half day so the wife made me sell off all my wheelers to get a 2nd vehicle lol it was heart breaking yes buttttttt
