  2. LOL yes , if a ham takes his HF mobile gear with him he ( or she) can literally talk to the world if the bands are open. The rules have changed considerably since I got my license in 1977. Morse code is no longer a requirement . Where it took at least a month or more to get all the theory and code speed up, some can get enough to pass the basic license in a weekend in Canada.. I would think it is much the same in the US. Back before there were satellite communications I chatted with some fellows at the South Pole research station from my mobile in my truck at the time.

  5. Excellent discussion guys. You brought up a subject often overlooked. Some options : PLb's Personal Locator Beacon...are the go to emergency device that transmit signal and gps locator to SAR's.... Search and rescue,,,155.160MHz. That being said my friend got a HAM license and that was cheaper and reliable in wilderness especially since he could talk and not declare an emergency. Moreover, ham radio's can operate Simplex...direct transmission without need of infrastructure support. It’s important to note that emergency frequencies (there is a list of them) aren’t just for professional rescuers and emergency workers; they can also be used by ordinary citizens who are equipped with the appropriate radio equipment. Follow proper guidelines and protocols when using these frequencies to ensure that communication lines remain clear and efficient for all parties involved. Also in an emergency remember the rule of three....three fires, three flashes, three shots. And of course " dot-dot -dot dash -dash- dash dot -dot dot " (SOS signal) in the snow or on the ground visible from above.

  7. We all hope to never need emergency communications.
  8. No the info is automatically texted to friends..I don't have cell service where i go usually. ..even when you MISS a check point or if you do not finish...It works to notify people I have listed to be tracking me. !!! You have a different better system which is good but All Trails works...
  9. I have a set of the high end walkie talkies they cover about 35 miles which covers my needs, i think, the only problem is you have to have someone listening on the other end. Not perfect but it might serve my needs, never have needed to use them.
  10. Ye3s, but needs cell coverage to do that You can download maps to use offline. It uses your phones GPS to show your tracks , but it doesn't relay your information outside of cell service. Search on " Alltrails emergency call" Even to download maps you have to have cell service.. You download the maps you want to use when off cell service and the app will use your phones GPS to show your travel to you but that's all . You need cell service to download maps and to relay your position to your friends / family
  11. Keep reading..."Alltrails Lifeline" It tracks my movements and notifies up to 5 people when I pass checkpoints as well as notifies them with my PGS coordinates and if I am over due

  13. My search on Alltrails shows it as a navigation only app. It does not provide emergency calling. If you are out of cell phone coverage area to make an emergency call you need a satellite connection device like Zoleo or Garmin Inreach. There may be others but those two are ones I know others have. Both are dedicated to emergency calling or text messaging and both are as expensive as buying a Starlink Mini. Neither of them offer internet access or voice / video capabilities and their service plans above the most basic emergency call are more expensive than Mini on standby... Alltrails can tell you where you are.. It does not allow you to call for help
  14. Absolutely...covers everywhere
  15. Mini on standby is only $10 /month in the US and gives you internet service anywhere. Works with your phone for e-mail, text, and voice communication , and we found it also allowed my granddaughter and I to have a voice and video chat from her camp. On standby the video froze or pixilated a few times but was still a solid connection.. At the full speed data it would have been solid.. It wouldn't work as a GPS but you could download maps with it. The biggest thing is the communication ability with the internet capabilities more of a bonus. To me it is a lot better than a dedicated satellite communicator and connection fees. Does All trails app work if you are out of range of cell service ?
  16. Mini is only 10 x12 inches. it could be strapped to one of the racks or stuffed in a backpack to be hauled out and used when wanted.
  17. I have "All Trails' It tracks me and shows trails even in mountains of Nevada when on foot. Plus it has an emergency communication$ feature that works from any remote area. I have seen it work with others. Damn Helicopter extractions are expensive! I think it would even work in my Hotel room..Never tried it.... LOL.
  18. Don't know of any "work around"...try this part number in a search...32900-19A10
  19. Happy 4th QC !! Good morning to work around the house and avoid the crowds !!
  20. A few of the guys have Starlink when we go camping but I'm not sure how it would be hauled on the quads
  21. I am missing a cdi box for my 1988 Suzuki quadrunner LT 4WD is there a rplacement box that i can wire into this bike to get it back running beings that the cdi box is no longer made
  22. What do you use for communications to home or for an emergency when out of cell phone range ? I haven't seen any threads on here concerning communications for emergency or just to keep in touch so I figured it would be interesting and helpful to get one going. We never think about it when riding , but we should .. Too many people have gotten into serious trouble while out riding and in such a case being able to call for help becomes a major consideration. I bought a Starlink Mini and wonder if anyone here is using one or a satellite emergency communicator like the Zoleo . At the moment I have lent my Mini to my granddaughter who is working in a remote mining camp. We have run some tests using it on standby mode and got very pleasantly surprised at just how well it works without having to have it on an expensive plan. Initially set it up on their 100GB data plan but set it to drop to standby on billing date.. At a size of about 12" x 10" it can easily be carried / set up on a quad or ATV / 4x4
  23. Hey, I'm thinking of upgrading my stock sport glide seat with memory foam as a bit of a project. I've seen how some guys use the heavy-duty padding inside the water repellent UTV seat cover fit Polaris Ranger XP 1000 crew for their UTV projects and wanted to try something similar for my bike. Has anyone done a DIY foam upgrade and have any tips? What sort of foam density would people recommend, and how easy is it to remove and refit the factory seat cover over the new padding? Any advice gratefully received!
  24. Noi It would not run if the pickup coil was wrong line up would be wrong. The problem is you are only getting 3 volts out of the CDI , and you are getting the same with both CDIs i dont have a service manual to chase the wiring , but something is wrong there, make sure 12 volts is going in and make sure your CDI ground is good. The problem seems intermittant something electrical is not doing its job all the time. When you were riding it was there any hint of a running problem, poor idle, backfiring etc. or just wouldnt start after 2 days.
  25. Great Game !! Time to plan a ride thur !!
  26. Good match so far! Could have been 2-0 if not for the offsides call
  27. I honestly didn’t know the pick up coil could go in wrong but would that still be a problem as I had the bike for a run after I replaced it and it was great, spark Only died after parking for a couple days, Ohms test was good aswell on this pickup coil, I have most of the harness open Iv found a few gremlins and repaired but still no fix and tested the killswitch at the switch so maybe a problem further down in the wiring
