I have a DS 650x available. Garage kept for its entire life and runs well. OMF beadlocked wheels. Located in San Antonio Texas area. I’m motivated to sell and work with shipping options but serious inquiries only interested in a large sport ATV that won’t come around again. Here’s a photo from a few weeks ago. Indeed... the water just hides the monster! I just thought I would throw the water jab out there for fun. Getting stuck in water is probably worse than mud alone since you end up with a stuck quad that may have an engine full of mud I'm not the one on the quad... I took the picture at the first annual High Lifter Mud Nationals a few years ago. It took the guy a while to get out and it didn't look like he was having a good time doing it.

Anyone can get stuck in "water"... but who's got the MUD?

That's if you could get one for $1.2 million. I think production stopped a few years ago (maybe 2000?) so the small number of cars are becoming more and more valuable. So how did you arange the seat time? I'd be thrilled just to see one. I've seen reports of two in Texas, so the chance for me is pretty small unless I start going to car shows.

Lightning can be challenging, but a long exposure time and a tripod helps.

I didn't make it out to Ouray . The trip was plagued with mechanical problems on the quad and my truck that limited the time I could spend riding. I've seen pictures of Ouray and "little Switzerland" fits. I would take it one further and call it Litter Zermatt. I wish I could have made it to Ouray to see it for myself. I've been trying to get back there for a while. It's a trip I've been planning but unable to put together for the past 4 years. I only spent a day riding the last (and only) time I was there but next time around I'm planning (hoping) to get a cabin on Lake San Cristobal (map Alpine Loop National Back Country Byway - Maps & Directions ) and use that as a base camp for a few days or riding.

All of the photos from the may photo contest got me thinking about riding trips... after all of the trips, one from back in 03 keeps coming back to me. Silverton sticks in my mind as the most memorable spot to ride. Nothing but ride open spaces and the occasional quad or jeep driving by... great place. I usually shoot in daylight or what I consider low light conditions. In a gym or stadium, I can hope to get 1/640th using f2.8 and ISO 1250 or 1600. A tele converter in that situation would be suicide. Anything below 1/640th won't freeze the action as much as I would like. I don't have any regular gigs that allow me to setup strobes. I've worked closely with folks that were using strobes while I was not, and I've found the strobes to be more limiting than helpful. The slow cycle time on strobes means that one or two shots can be taken for my 10-15. That's normally not a real problem but that reduces the chance of nailing the shot. It would be easier to pay $4000 and have a lens that can do it all Capture One is a great tool. I also like "Neat Image" Neat Image :: download to remove noise from high ISO images. This makes shooting at 1600 or even 3200 ISO reasonable.

Ha, yeah, looks like I missed the photo description. I was guessing it may have been with a tele converter but I wasn't sure. TC's are good when you can afford to slow a lens down and possibly lose the ability to auto focus. I can't do either for most of the shooting that I still do. Manual focus and anything below f4 is almost unusable is low light sport conditions. The 300 f2.8 or 400 f2.8 are the two lenses I will consider if I keep moving forward with photography.

The Canon 70-200 2.8L IS is the lens I work with the most. It's also my longest lens. I've been close to getting a 300 or 400mm a few times but the type of shooting I usually do doesn't work with a fixed telephoto lens. Every time I've tried fixed long lenses has always ended in shots I'm never satisfied with. The $3000+ price tag for a new lens that wouldn't add a substantial amount of quality to my setup is hard to justify... especially since I have all of my setup was paid for by previous work and I only do a few small gigs anymore and no more "pro" level work. The 10d, 20d, 30d cameras are good platforms. I print very few of my own photos for display in my house and I've only printed 2 large prints. Both of the 24x36" prints were from my 10D. I haven't taken a photo good enough to blow up to 40x60" that the photo shop started to offer. Still working towards it, but none of my shots are worth looking at in that size each day. But as for the camera, the person behind the camera is more important than the camera. Granted, a camera that can take 8 shots per second helps for action... but there's more to it. I've looked at tomduggan.com and it looks like you already know that. Some great looking shots that have some interesting points of view. I've always thought that cameras are worse than drugs. Find an aspiring photographer in need of a long lens or fast camera. He/she will get the same kind of shakes that a adict has when someone with a $15k+ setup walks by. I have very little of my MX shots online. LiteTimes.net is probably the best place for my past work. Most of the other shots are too borring for anyone to be interested in. I have a few interesting shots about Canon durability and MX on my home system. I'm away from home for the weekend so I'll see what I can dig up when I get back.

Familiar with EXIF data? My primary camera is a 1dMKII. I was doing work for a couple of magazines and a few quad accessory vendors when I bought the MKII, so the MK II worked out great. I had been using a 10D before the 1dMKII... and there's no comparison. The speed, quality, and durability of the 1D line is awe inspiring. In the same weekend that I took the shot I posted, I spent about an hour shooting in heavy rain without any kind of rain cover. I was soaked but the MKII and L lenses kept kicking. I ended up getting shots that many of the other photog's missed because their equipment wasn't able to take the rain. The Canon 1D line is amazing.

Here's one of my favorite MX shots from back in 2005 at Lake Whitney. In the photo, Doug Gust is out in front followed by Jason Luburgh with Tim Farr fading in the background. Luburgh went on to take 2nd overall while Farr came in 4th and Gust finished 5th. It looks like the forum limits image sizes to 600x400 pixels so the image is pretty low quality. A higher quality version can be found here.

Nice shot! It's a great snap shot but it's inches away from being a good poster. If you cropped the shot down to where the top left corner is above the rider's left hand and expand the bottom right corner to the edge of the photo. Remove the date and that could be a killer framed shot. Nice!

I looked at all of the sport quads when I was shopping around. Everything felt like a toy to me. The image of a gorilla on a tricycle comes to mind. The DS650 was the only machine beefy enough to make me feel at home. Yes, it is heavier and wider than most quads, but I'm taller and heavier than most guys. It's a good fit. I've never had a problem running through trails or the track with guys (or gals) on smaller machines. I like to think it has to do with the skill in the helmet, not the frame... but that would just be a "cocky can-am owner" speaking... so I would never say such things. :rolleyes: The DS was unfortunately not a hit with the masses and can-am has gone a different route with new machines aimed at the core ATV market. It makes sense. The DS650 was aimed at a niche market that soon found itself saturated and 650's ended up sitting on show room floors. I even had a hard time finding my DS. I had to drive 4 hours to the nearest dealer only to find the DS in the show room with a dead battery since no one had given it any loven in a while. It was like finding a diamond laying on the ground while walking down the street... for 4 hours. I think there were angels singing when I sat on it for the first time. Hard to say... it was all a blur that involved me writing a check for a machine with a dead battery. From Can-Am's point of view, it would have been stupid to leave the 650 on the market. It was better to stop production and leave the 650 resting securely in record books and the hearts and minds of the few, the proud, the ones able to call themselves... DS650 owners!

I don't have the gps logs to prove it but that's the number it ran according to a Garmin. That's not a perfect speed measure but I didn't bring the clock with me that day Anyone can talk about what is fast and who had what friend do what test on what day with a given situation... but the only reliable tests are those that are perfectly controlled or calculated. I'm over the virtual fist fight on forums... I've posted enough and read enough to know where these go, so you're the boss. 79 on a ds... no way! What was I thinking. I probably meant 59. Anyway, I would like to see what the newer quads do from the factory.

I have to at least try and defend my toy's honor! If I remember correctly, the Zilla was/is the fastest stock atv ever produced. I haven't seen any scientific or reliable speed tests to know what quads tops the charts these days. I'd like to see some if you know of any. My rough speed test on the stock DS650X was 79 mph on level pavement with little to no wind and a 230 pound 6'8" rider according to GPS.

Well, I guess you might have a point. I see you own a Polaris... so I need to look at the DS from your point of view: I see what you mean. It's not all that attractive from the back. You should see the front of it some time. You might have better luck if you sneak up on it while it's parked.
