New Rider - Etiquette Question ATV Gear

Great to be on the boards. Just picked up a 2013 Polaris Sportsman 550 XPS LE. Its my first quad, and am just waiting for some slightly warmer than 10 degree temperatures to get out and enjoy it. My buddies were pushing me towards a dirt bike, but considering that I have kids it made more sense to go with a quad, not to mention I am just at an age where trying to keep up with seasoned riders just sounded painful.

In any case, I plan to do the weekend getaways with the dirt bike crew, fully understanding they will likely be doing something different than I will. I ordered a bunch of gear for the next trip. Helmet/goggles, jersey, pants, gloves, and boots mostly MX gear. It made sense to have clothes designed to be in the mud and dirt and offer protection should something go wrong.

In any case, my 2 wheeled friends are feel that its exceptionally ridiculous for quad riders to be outfitted in MX gear, and very mock worthy. ESPECIALLY, if the gear matches. They feel anything more than a helmet is ridiculous. I totally get skiers wouldn't dress like boarders, and when you golf you dont wear jeans etc. but is there a similar dress code for ATV riders?

it's you on the bike, not them. having that gear will put you in your comfort zone. hey, you have kids and who pays the bills if you get hurt if you didn't have it on? i was off 3 weeks 2 years ago with a broken collar bone. didn't feel like going back to work, but, i was the bread winner and had my own insulating business and had nothing coming in. you do what you think is right !!!

this reminds me of my philippine wife that came over to canada, to fort mcmurray, -40c all winter long. she was so much into fashion and wanted the most styleish outter wear, i said look, you dress with the butt ugliest coat/parka that keeps you warm, covers your butt, and don't worry about the metrosexuals in their designer clothes freezing their a$$es off. staying warm is number 1 priority ...

wearing all the protective gear also sets a good example for your little ones.

In the group of guys that I ride with, I am the only one who wears impact armor but also wear workboots. No one in our group cares what each other wears. Find new riding buddies. We all have a different level of comfort and budget.

All depends on what sort of riding your doing. I see no point wearing a helmet when I'm only covering 6 or 8 mile on the beach doing more fishing than riding but if you are gonna try and keep up with ya mates, wear the gear. Id be more inclined to spend the cash on getting a couple of helmets for the kids.

I do a lot of jumping and stunt riding so I always wear all my gear. MX gear is not just made for 2 wheels, it is made for the conditions you will be riding in. Those guys are either just busting your balls or complete idiots. I always get pissed at guys on bikes that jack around the quad guys. Quads are harder to ride and take more effort and talent than bikes. If you like the look and feel of the gear go with it. You can mix and match anyway you like also. Wear a jersey and jeans, a t-shirt and riding pants. The only thing I suggest you wear at all times is a helmet and boots. Sh** happens quick and even if you don't fall off, the guy in front could chuck a rock back at you, tree branches on the ground and in the air, lots of possibles. Ride safe and ride lots.

I say wear what ever U want !! Safety in more important !! I ride my quad with every safety thing I can find LOL In the summer I wear all my dated MX gear and look good in it LOL In the winter I style in my Carharts coverall :yes:JMO

I agree with most in here. If they're making fun of you for protective gear, that's no good. However, I don't think you need a jersey, riding pants and riding boots.

I am atv rider I have use atv riding suit for riding. I have wear atv riding suit, riding pants, with protectkors, full face helmet and good shoes for safty. This only thing I wear at all times in the atv riding. Sometime i have used a jersey and jeans, a t-shirt for riding.
