98 Grizzly 600 runs smooth but slow...

I've got a 98 grizzly 600.  It starts fine, idles and revs  smooth up to about 3500 rpm.  It's got enough torque to grind the tires into powder if you hold the front brake but only drives about 10 mph...

I've taken the CV apart, cleaned out the old grease, regreased it with Yamalube and everything moves freely.  However, when it revs up the cones do not move as far as it looks like they should...  Any ideas would greatly appreciated.

If  the  motor will  rev up  ok ,  I'd suggest  blocking the  quad up  with  back wheels  off the  ground..  Make  sure it  can't  fall off the  blocking  and can't move.  With the cover  off  the  CVT so  you  can see  what's happening ,   rev the  motor  up  and watch the  clutches.. The  motor  clutch  should close  until the belt  is  at the top  of the groove  and the driven  should  open  until  the  belt  is  almost   down to the bottom. . Without  a  load  on the   tires ,  it  may  not  open  all  the  way since  opening  and closing  of the  clutches  is  determined  by the  load  on the  system  as well l as the  RPM.  The  motor  should rev well  over 3500...  should  go to  around  6000 - 8000.

Have  you also  checked to be  sure you don't have a  brake dragging ? The  tires  should  turn  fairly  easily  when  off the ground. There  will be  some  resistance  from the  drive train , but  it  should  not  be  difficult to  turn the  tires

When I removed the CV to clean and inspect I did exactly what you recommend.  When I reassembled it I left the cover off, jacked it up and started it up.  Everything turns as freely as it should but the drive clutch (cones) do not close far enough when revved up; there is still space for the belt to ride up higher on the cones.  When I had it apart I could not find anything that would cause it to hang up so I'm kind of at a loss.  I might take it apart again just to check...  I also need to poke around Google and figure out how to hook up a tach to see how high the engine is actually revving, see if that's right.

Did you  check to  see  if the  driven  clutch is free to  open  up?..  If  it  is  sticking   it can prevent the  drive clutch  from  closing all the  way.

You  can  get   tachs  that work  on a  optical  system. Put  a  reflective  mark on  a rotating  pulley ,  clutch   or  whatever  and the  hand held  optical  tach reads  the  reflections as  pulses to  calculate  rpm

Search on  "hand  held optical  tachometer"  or  "laser  photo tachometer"

Tachometer reads 4000 rpm max.  I took the side cover off and removed the drive belt.  No drag on the driven pully at all and it opens easily enough.  However, the wet clutch is pretty well toasted; it's worn down to about half the minimum spec and the drum was obviously hot and is worn on the friction surface.  I wonder if there might be an equilebrium where the CVT ratio changes to the point where the wet clutch can't turn it (because it's toast).  If the drive belt is stretched it would make it worse, ride higher on the primary drive.

So I've ordered the wet clutch assembly and a new belt.  But since I live in Papua New Guinea and the parts are coming via sea freight it will probably be November before I can install them.  Either way these parts need to be replaced; hopefully it solves the problem.  Thanks for your help!

WOW! Pretty cool. Post some pics when you get a chance. I'm sure the riding is beautiful.

I did a compression test on my 2005 Bombardier Traxter 650 CVT and it's 75 PSI.  service manual only talks about leak down test.  No specification for engine compression the manual.  What does 75 PSI tell me?  Thank in advance.

A little history of this machine.  640 miles.  Picked it up about 2 years ago, not running. Probably the computer.  Tested all circuits and confirm it was the computer.  Long story short, I watched a Youtube video and fixed the computer. ATV now started and runs.  BUT, it tops out 20 MPH.  I cleaned the carb 3 times also using a Mikuni carb kit after the second time.  Slide in carb is going up and down.  Only adjustment for fuel is at 1.5 turns out.  NGK Sparkplug had soot on main part but brown on the electrode.  Champion sparkplug is brown.  I check CVT clutches and they both appear to engage like they suppose to.  Checked valve clearance it's 0.00, I can't get any feeler gauges in-between.  I check timing chain I believe it's in the correct position and hasn't skipped.  I removed muffler plug and drilled into muffler to try and make sure it wasn't plugged.

Hi guys. I have a problem where the quad will start and run well for about 5 minutes and then it dies. On inspection the airbox has oil in it (quite a lot). The oil is pumping through the cylinder head breather hose. This problem first happened suddenly. I have since done the top end including, piston, gaskets, rings and valves. I have also done the carb (not that I thought that this was the problem). The compression seems normal. The only thing that I can think of, is that I did not grind the valves well enough. Anyone experienced this? If so, how did you fix it? Any other thoughts?

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

The 2024 ATVs are out and I was just looking at the websites for Yamaha and Suzuki. The Grizzly and King Quad have come a long way, probably two of my favorite quads over the years. Both of these come with power steering but I almost like the King Quad styling a little more. The plastics haven't changed much over the years either, mayeb a little more rugged. The King Quad racks are more like the Polaris plastic racks (I think they were the first to introduce these) but on a closer look, I think its just plastic covers over the traditional metal racks. The Grizzly still keeps the old style metal racks. I like the display/instrument panel on the Grizzly more.

Thoughts on these two? Here's a pretty good comparison of both 2023 models. I didn't know some of these things like no seat latch on the Grizzly and hydraulic rear brake vs cable. Good video to watch if you are consideting these:

I have to replace all 4, how much is involved?  Will they slide out of the front yoke? Or, do the boots just slide over the wheel end?
