Names Alex. I'm 17 years old and looking to get into riding ATVs. I had rode them a little with friends when I was younger but havn't for quite a bit of time. I'm a very big car person. Mostly Jeeps and Toyotas but I'm into just about anything with an engine. I drive an '05 Tacoma PreRunner V6 TRD Off Road. Its mostly stock (only recently got it) but its my pride and joy! I used to drive a 2K7 Nissan SE-R but after having problems with it I sold it, got a truck, and have been happy sense. I live in Jacksonville, FLA but was born in Atlanta Georgia.

I am looking to get an ATV near the end of Summer time. I am looking primarily at used ones because I'm only 17 and don't make much money. I'm into off roading so I probably want a 4x4 ATV, hopefully I wont have any problems fitting one in my truck. I don't know much about quads so I figured I'd join so I can learn up about them before I purchase one.

Here is my truck which is my current obsession. Soon it will be my quad and my truck!

You deff. want an auto. since you havent rode a lot in the past.

look in you local newspapers and autotraders to find something to your liking.

Polaris,Yamaha, and Honda all make great Utilities in the range of 400cc-500cc.

Suzuki i sort of the botttom of the utilitiy world. but if you take care of it.it will last.

polaris has a problem with weight. they are heavier than most, but that doesnt take away from the get up and go, most reviewers say. Can-Am/Bombardier is the top of the power class. but they are hella expensive. Hondas are mega Reliable, but lack a bit in the power end. Yamaha seems to have a great blend of power and reliability. Kawisakis Brute Force, seems to maybe be a bit out of your range power wise [very powerful machines] but if you think you can handle it go for it. and just a fair warning. if its not Kawisaki,Suzuki,Polaris,Honda,Can-Am/Bombardier,Yamaha. I would STAY AWAY.

cheap chinese quads are both lacking in power and reliability.

My top machines for this class i would recommend.

Polaris - Sportsman 450-500

Yamaha- Grizzly 450

Kawisaki - BF 650 [if you want the EXTRA power]

Honda- Foreman

this is like my longest post lol hope it helps :cute:

Welcome aboard!

I have to agree with the above, measure your bed or you'll be buying a trailer! There are some nice 400-500 cc quads out there. Suzuki King Quad & Yamaha Grizzly are my 2 choices for you.

My father-in-law has a Prairie 360 and it is a really good quad. He was also looking at Hondas when he purchased the Prairie but Honda doesn't have a front locker at all I don't believe. Suzuki and Yamahas are nice. Polaris is good too. I have a friend that has a Sportsman 700. Some people don't like their braking system though.

Welcome Alex and all the quads mentioned above are great choices and one not mentioned is a hybred between sport and utility.. They are less in weight then the full utility quads and more than a sport but unlike the full sport they are 4x4 and some you can even put racks on

I have a polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 (all wheel drive)with a rear rack and winch on the front and love it i also have a front rack which is not on right now.. Can Am makes one to but like stated above they are mega $$

I picked up my 2003 Scrambler 500 for about 2 grand and it runs like new

Good luck in your search

here is a pic of the scrambler 500

Starting this build thread to keep up with everything on my build and hope to motivate someone!

I picked up this 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 250 2 weeks ago. A guy that I hunt with parked it at the hunt club for a year or so before I asked him if he wanted to sell. He said " fill my feeder and throw some batteries in my cameras, and you can have it". Sounds like a deal to me!
I have attached some pictures of how it sat under a tarp in the woods and when I got it home and cleaned up a little.

Heres my story. Kinda long. I guess I was a late bloomer when it comes to quads. I had never ridden a quad in my life. Rode Dirt Bikes as a kid growing up. Back in Oct of '06 I found a Mustang on craigslist. Took it for a test drive one morning before work. Fast car. 351 Cleveland. I had planned on meeting the guy again after work. For some strange reason thats still to this day beyond me, I stopped in Hillsboro MotoSports on the way home from work. I had 6 Grand on me. There was a left over '05 sitting by the front door. It was on sale for $4999. It was $5499 OTD. I didnt even look at anything else. I knew nothing about quads accept I thought it really looked coool and I had the money in my pocket to buy it. I was sitting on it when the salesman walked up and asked... "Can I help you?" Without hestitation I pulled 60 Ben Franklins outta my front pocket and said "I want this Quad. Load it up in my truck." It was just about dark by the time I drove away from the shop. BTW, I didnt bother to ask my ol lady if I could buy it. LOL. Anyway, I took it by the house and showed her. She was kinda stunned but not mad. We drove over to a friend of mines house and unloaded it. I took it to the field across the street from his house. HOLY CHIT!!!!! I was surprised by the power. I had it for about 2 weeks and took it to Sand Lake. I was there a few hours and rolled it on a banked turn at the top of the bowl right before you get to the one-ways. When it rolled, I flew off and landed on my belly. The quad came bouncing and landed on my back. For a month I couldnt even walk. I was scared of it. I considered trading it for a 250EX. Went back to the shop. The salesman said..."Dude!!! You dont want a 250EX!!! Trust me. Just get used to it" I still wasnt convinced. I put it on craigslist for $4000. Calls were coming in. I had a guy that wanted to come look at it that evening. I decided to take it for one last ride at Browns Camp before I sold it. I was still afraid of it. After about 5 minutes I started feeling comfortable on it again. I decided right then, I loved my Honda 450 and would learn how to ride it instead of selling it. That was late Nov of '06. Work was slow for a Painter in Oregon. My new job everyday? Going to Browns Camp and ridding my Quad. I bought my Girl Friend an '02 Blaster. I rode my 450 for 4-6 hours almost every single day for 3 months. And yes, I know my way around Browns Camp pretty well. LOL. In March I bought her an '06 TRX250EX (Thank God I didnt trade my 450 for one of those) LOL Since then, I have become totally addicted to quads. I love them. Couldnt imagine not owning at least one quad. Luckily I have two. My "07 was $6500 OTD in July of '07. Bought it for my Girlfriend. Traded in her 250 EX. A month later we broke up. So, I wound up with two Honda 450's.

Hello, im looking for some input on this situation i have. My 94 Mojave has no spark, and i have no idea what it is. Ive replaced/tested the magneto, the pickup coil, cdi, the ignition coil. Even the key and Killswitch. I haven't tested the harness its self, but i have tried another harness and still nothing. The only thing i can think of is the fly wheel itself. I have found a lot of metal shavings in the fly wheel and have cleaned it the best I could. But nothing happened afterwards. I am truly stumped here and hoping some of yous could shed some knowledge/ideas that could help get this thing to fire.

      Hey I have a 1997 big bear 350 4x4
I replaced the shifter shaft and the shift arm linkage and the rod when I installed them all I was unaware that you had to line the dot on the shifter shaft with the gap on the linkage arm gap put it all back  together and rode it I can't get it to shift in the right gears  I can move the shift cam by hand and goes in different gears but with the shifter shaft in it riding I can't put it in R or N
Anyone know how to line up the shifter shaft and the shift cam s
